On 10th April 1070 it was announced that Paul McCartney had Quit The Beatles, effectively splitting the band up. Exactly 50 years later, on 10th April 2020, I run through the key events leading up to this bombshell.

Very detailed explanation. It was fifty years ago today that..... On the stage called show biz, everyone is entitled to state :"my favourite singer, band, actor, actress is.... Everyone is right and nobody is wrong, but as for being iconic, the beatles are second to none.

My mother told me on a bus. Little did I know I was about two years away from becoming a life long Beatles fan in 1972 BBC radio 2 ran a series called the Beatles story, I was hooked every week I was glued to the radio to hear another batch of songs interviews. It was like a soap opera. Later I bought my first Beatles record. I nearly bought let it be box set we ithe book but went with a collection of Beatles oldies, because it had more hits on it. I became a big wings fan buying c moon/ hi hi hi in 1972. Anticipating every new release from solo Beatles,to Beatles complications they seem to come thick and fast in the seventies. Saw Paul and Ringo live. Several times over year's and saw George at the benefit concert at the royal Albert hall.

Many thanks for this Andrew. I was only 8 going on 9 when this happened, so I wasn't aware of it at the time, I only remember reading about it in the various Beatles books I've read through the years. This account of yours explained it most clearly, and sorted out some confusion I felt about the events of that day, especially Ringo's visit with Paul. Hope you and yours are safe and well. Looking forward to Wednesday!

I think John basically quit The Beatles after Revolver...with the exception of a few good songs John wrote, Paul kept The Beatles together and working for the last 3 years

Too easy. John and Paul were writing together again in 1969, per John. After working together on The Ballad of John and Yoko John was excited again. But in September when John brought ‘Cold Turkey’ to George and Paul and they did not want to do it John left. After the revelation by Klein that Paul owned more of Northern Songs because he was buying more stock this was the final straw.

The Beatles disbanded because Paul in late 1968 wanted to leave the group and start a solo career, as he wanted to get all the money, be the sole star, and play softer music. He then told Hunter Davis about this, and to prepare the public Paul released the film Let It Be / Get Back, which John called Paul's film for Paul. This is the basis. Everything else is just excuses or little things.

In hindsight, I think it was a mistake by Paul to include the "self-interview" with McCartney's release, considering how John, George and Ringo reacted to it, especially John. Looking back in the day to day activities of all four following Paul's announcement, particularly in the first few months after this, it seems that John, George and Ringo were thinking that Paul's quitting was just a temporary flare-up, that he would eventually come back. Briefly, John, George and Ringo considered carrying on the group, by bringing in Klaus Voormann as Paul's bass guitar replacement, and changing the name of the group from the Beatles to the Ladders.

I remember the breakup being all over the radio when I was nine. There was always rumors of a reunion all through the 70's. They would have eventually done something I think. There was the episode when Paul was at the Dakota watching Saturday Night Live with John and the offer of $3000 to reunite was made. John said he and Paul almost went straight to the studio a block away. Art Garfunkel spoke alone with John at a party/gathering and he said John asked him what was it like to do music with his former partner because he was considering doing something with Paul. Jack Douglass recalled during the Double Fantasy sessions, they were always on the phone together. They were probably discussing the upcoming sessions planned for what would become Stop and Smell the Roses, where all 4 would convene. John had also signed on to make new music for The Long and Winding Road (Anthology) whenever the Apple mess was settled. Personally, I liked George's cryptic answer to a reporter's "will The Beatles ever play together again?" I'm paraphrasing the response but it went something like this, "I dunno, but if we did, it would be very good, and I certainly wouldn't tell you about it." I think it was from a U.S. magazine called RECORD when George was promoting his self titled album. The late seventies were filled with possibility.

They haven't split. They're resting, they prefer kipping on their back. They're just stunned as they were waking up. They're pining for the Cavern. Remarkable song, 'Norwegian Wood', isn't it? beautiful lyrics. Look ere my good man, I took the liberty of examining Let It Be when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason it was on the shelf in the first place was that it had been nailed there.

I heard that John was the last to signed the dissolution of The Beatles. I believe that I read somewhere that when John said he wanted a divorce from The Beatles that it was Alan Klein that advised John to not make a public announcement John agreed then Paul made a pubic statement and here we are. John never said that The Beatles would never reunite. I believe he said on an interview that everybody would have to want to do it at the same time for the right reasons. He said he would be up for some studio recording work. Andrew with some many books out there about The Beatles sometimes I don't know if they're being truthful or not I like to rely on radio interviews or videos. Anyway thanks for the videos as always and take care.

I think history wrongly encourages us to view past actions with the over-precision of hindsight. We think of John as having made this irrevocable decision that he was 'no longer a Beatle', but I think at the time he was just in an incredibly emotional and unstable state of mind and was just reacting to what was going on around him, and to what he was feeling. I think it's pretty much inevitable that he and Paul (and by extension the Beatles) would have worked together again. The fact that Paul and George were able to do it despite all the bad blood there speaks volumes. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had the most awful falling out in the eighties...look at them now.

When the Apple suits were finally settled, court documents revealed that John had signed on for Anthology (then titled The Long and Winding Road) to make music with the others for the project. Anthology was in the works since the seventies. The Rutles movie in '78 was a spoof of a rough cut George had shown to Eric Idle.

Excellent video Andrew. It's a pity the Beatles journey ended how it did but I always think that John, George & Ringo split the Beatles by going with Klein. The Beatles had a rule of all four needing to vote yes for them to do something. The first time they didn't adhere to it the band breaks up! Cheers...

Andrew this is a subject that is close to my heart and mind and I have to say that this is relentless description of the show for the masses without any real understanding of the bands demise which happened when the original Paul who always sang the harmony in duets with John the leader of the early group walked out of a session in 67 after a row and got decapitated in a car crash and the pics can be seen This crisis of England's and world leading moneymaking and English cultural pop juggernaut attracted M15 who had a likely replacement and orchestral genius who took over with The Sergeant Pepper blockbuster and new psychedelic sound the disintegration just grew from there and I do wish you would offer up some real insight into subjects if your going to take the trouble and engage other ppls time when they could just as easily read the daily Maya paper cheers

@AndrewDixonMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kian, Well the quick answer is: Get the mono box! But, Of course it's not quite as simple as that. You would have to be accepting that it won't contain Yellow Submarine, Let It Be or Abbey Road. If your requirement is that it has to have everything they released, then you should get the stereo box, which is fantastic, but the mono box is another level above!

Here's a question for all you Beatlephiles. Ever since the release by the Beatles of John's Free As A Bird and Real Love, I've been trying to figure out if those two sound like the Beatles as we last knew them. So the specific question here is, do the songs on McCartney sound like Beatle songs? They were written and recorded when Paul was still with the Beatles. The White Album and Abbey Road do contain a few solo McCartney performances. So strip down any late Beatle record and leave only McCartney compositions, would they sound similar to McCartney?

Just read "And in the end" by Mcnab. New details, even for fans that have read a lot. Quite interesting (and sad) reading. Also I think George had developed a negative attitude to Paul (and the band as such), that even was still there in 1994/95, that was an important factor for the break up.

@@AndrewDixonMusic This is true, it`s also sad to see George with tears in his eyes at the Rock`n`Roll Hall of Fame induction of the Beatles, where Paul didn`t show up. But no matter what, deep in their hearts these four guys loved each other and Paul and George became close again in the end, with Paul referring to George as his baby brother.

In a Rolling Stone magazine, promoting Cloud 9, the interviewer asked how he was getting on with his former bandmates. George said that when the interview was over, he was having dinner with Paul & Ringo. He also half joked with Paul about running for Parliament together. When George passed away it was at one of Paul's properties in the states, where they laughed and shed tears together as they said their goodbyes. At the core, they were still brothers.

Sad but true. But on the other hand ......... they gave their all. It was finished. But I don't know why, but I always, since a lot of years, think that John would not have ended the band, at least not till he had the primal therapy. Just a thought , because I still wonder if John knew who he was before he went into Arthur Janov's therapy. Paul had to end it. It was over and done. By the way Paul booked a lot of studio time under a fake name, Billy Martin, to record his McCartney album.

Lennon was furious and never forgave McCartney for doing this. McCartney pleaded with Lennon not to announce the break up. Lennon thought it was because that somehow, someway they would get back together and do it all over again. To Lennon, McCartney used the breakup as a publicity stunt to sell an album.

Lennon left The Beatles in late 1969 but sensitive 'royalty' negotiations were being led by Klein, so that couldn't be announced. The Beatles continued without Lennon into 1970 actually with the final recordings for the 'Get Back' project.

Despite all the fans that would have liked them to continue or reunite, I feel we got their best. Sure George had wings to fly without the constraints of the group, but his solo career soon ran out of steam. Ringo was always going to need a little help from his friends and his voice is an acquired taste. Lennon had a couple of good albums in him and the legendary Imagine single of course. Who knows what the 80's would have brought from him. Certainly Double Fantasy then Milk and Honey didn't hint at much. But he was only getting back into it when he was murdered. Lastly Mr. McCartney. Possibly my third favourite Beatle behind Lennon and Harrison. Too much schmaltz and sugary nonsense for my liking; even though he really could rock with the best of them. Oh darling, back in the u.s.s.r to mention two. His solo work needed Lennon's caustic critical tongue in my opinion. Half ideas that could have been great, but sadly weren't. And now, he's like his own tribute act sadly. We go to see McCartney now, in the same way our grand children may go to see an elephant or rhino. Cos living Beatles are an endangered species. Definitely a question of the whole better than the parts.
