Exactly. I love apples AND oranges. I love cats AND dogs. Maybe apples and cats a little better, but there's no basis for a debate. But, just for the record, the Beatles ARE the greatest rock/pop band in history -- musically, culturally and sociologically. Heck, McCartney himself said that the Stones weren't the Fabs' main rivals. That distinction belonged to that sunny California band from the across the pond, the Beach Boys. All that said, I love the Stones' greatest work from 1968-1972 (Banquet, Bleed, Fingers, Exile).

The Beatles as a band has not made an album in almost 50 years. In 2020, we’ll have the 50th anniversary of Let It Be, their final album. Only up to 1967. After that The Beatles went downhill fast. The Apple years were not nearly as great as Beatlemania. And as solo artists forget it. All four, especially John sucked. Maybe a few by Paul qualified as good but none nearly like before with John's help. But how do you follow an act like the Beatles. Why any tried was a mistake. Should have started new careers behind the cameras.
@G49V47D412 жыл бұрын
@@kentduryea1741 Wait a minute - you do realize that the Apple years produced The Beatles (more infamously known as The White Album, Abbey Road, and even Let It Be contains great sings, just lacking in production value - not to mention the single Hey Jude/Revolution, and several other pretty good works, such as Lady Madonna and Don't Let Me Down. As for solo careers, it's true, they were not the force separately as together, but John came out with two epic albums (The Plastic Ono and Imagine, although the former is the greater of the two), Paul came out with Venus and Mars, Ram, and Band on the Run (outstanding), George came out with All Things Must Pass and Living In The Material World (both tremendous), and Ringo, not a song writer, but with a little help from his friends (especially George), came out with very good singles - it seems you are not an overly big fan of The Beatles, that's understandable. And by the way, in this era, The Rolling Stones were really on fire, no doubt about that - but The Beatles, in my estimation, were not going downhill fast (or at any speed) at all - I have had a couple musician buddies of mine say that they thought The Beatles may have been getting better, think about the songs on the aforementioned albums that could have appeared as Beatles songs. Again I do like the Rolling Stones, they are burning it up from 1968 - 1972, what a stretch they had (Led Zeppelin was also kicking into super high gear as well). What an era!!!

The Beach BOys revolutioonised studio music making which paved the way for the Beatles Sgt-Pepper, which finished that revolution. The Stones, on the other hand, spoke, in their songs, of suffering, police abuse, violence, the nefarious effects of drugs, prostitution, prison, poverty, etc. That was the real revolution which was at the hart of riots all over the country. Gimmie Shelter was an amblem for the protest against the Vietnam war. While John was singing about sitting on a corn flake, Mik was in the middle of a crossfire hurricane, which was the best definition of what was happening in the real world. I love The Rolling Stones! I've seen them live fifteen times and they never fail to put on a completely outstanding show. Their work from 1964 to 1971 puts 99% of all groups who have ever cut a record to shame. The Beatles are in the other one percent. The Stones are mainly a three-chord, blues/rock outfit, with a carefully manufactured attitude, who has always been capable of getting people off of their arses and shaking their bones, with fists defiantly punching the air of authority. The Beatles changed the gravity of the earth's pull with a technicolor attack, and a continual progression through waters previously uncharted, while creating a musical patchwork never to be equaled, and one which has never lost its luster. A thousand decades from now, should the earth still be inhabited by humans, that same catalog will continue to lift the hearts of each of our descendants who have the capacity to feel the love of life and the adventure life it is. There will never, ever, be another group as timeless, powerful, and inclusive as the Fab Four. The power of love will always be dominant over the power of angst and descent. All you need is love is not just the lyrics of a song, it's a way to live one's life to the fullest. When you put on a Beatles song, your heart smiles. Just as it was always meant to do.

Both bands were great. Both bands changed music. I dont think music can be ranked in terms of whats better. There's a lot of personal opinion involved with the question of what good music is, just like any art. That being said, in terms of everything a band has done in it's history, including its popularity, style/image, impact on music, musical talent, etc, i believe the Beatles are the greatest band of all time.

The Beatles are the Mozart, Beethoven and J.S Bach of the 20th century and is the reason why their music is studied in every music college all over the world. The Beatles were in a totally different class of composers than the Stones and every musician knows this is true. The Stones admit themselves their success was in the wake of the Beatles and they are truly grateful to the Beatles for making that possible. The Beatles were lightyears ahead in their musical ability and composition and still to this day NOONE has even come close to their genius.

Two totally different bands except for the time period, hair, and guitars. Two totally different stories and approaches to music as well. Beatles = rock 'n roll + Motown, Girl Groups, and standards (like 'Till There was You). Greater knowledge of chord structure helped in later songs. Were friends as well as bandmates and went through an "apprenticeship" of almost 5 years before they "made it" (except for Ringo, whom they all knew and liked and who was hired later on.) Were the "total package" by the time they came to the U.S. Great original songs, harmonies, a stylish image due largely to manager Brian Epstein, great record producer in George Martin, great rapport with the press; total pros!! Brian Jones, the Stones' founding member, ran an ad for players who wanted to play BLUES and hired all of the early members; first Ian Stewart on piano (who later was demoted to road manager by Stones manager Andrew Oldham ) Mick, Keith, and their buddy Dick Taylor on bass. But their roots were Chicago blues as well as rock 'n roll like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Less advanced chord structures, more earthy and chaotic "feel," (as well as image). None were friends before the band except Mick and Keith. When Taylor quit, they got Bill Wyman on bass and finally Charlie Watts on drums. Their rise to fame was a bit quicker; about a year or so, maybe a year and a half, although it took them longer in the States. Stones owed more to the Beatles than the Beatles did to the Stones, the Beatles having given them one of their tunes to record, ("I Want to Be Your Man" which, at the time was a sure hit since everything the Beatles did at the time turned to gold.) Both groups did what they did very well, and both have left us with some great music as well as interesting (and sometimes tragic) histories.

Here's a nice story. In the early 60's my mum used to follow them everywhere. One day before a gig at the Empire she went to their houses. She had no luck until she got to George's. When she knocked his dad invited her and her mate in as my mum had broken her stilleto. George's dad mended it as he was a cobbler. Then George came in the room with a signed photo. My mum always says that she nearly passed out as George was her favourite. As you can imagine my upbringing was Beatles mad. I adore them. When I say underated it's only because I want everyone to lavish praise on them. It's not because I'm stoned or anything.

To me the difference lies in the Beatles ability to keep on re-engineering themselves and their music throughout the short life of that great group. They acted as if they knew their music was destined for immortality, and indeed it is! You listen yo their music and it is a journey through a troubled world coming out of a global was, rebuilding itself with different values that empowered teen agers and youth. A new world economy order was established and new generation wanted to live, love and be loved. After few years and numerous tours, the Liverpool boys started their quest for immortality and produced songs with unique lyrics that are new to the world of rock or any style of music (Eleanore Rigby, a day in life, etc.) Another era of their life began with the fifth Beatle George Martin, and Strawberry fields was born ... that and grandma music that were Paul’s gift to the world (Maxwell, lady madonna, your mother should know, etc.). The Indian part of their journey is my favorite .. it witness the reincarnation of the silent Beatle who knocked off the socks of the world with his genius songs... They are a band that will be remembered a hundred years from now and even more
