Interesting topic. As it happens, the current issue of Beatlefan has an article dedicated to the Old Brown Shoe drummer mystery. The article comes down on the side of Ringo and cites examples including in the Get Back doc where they’re working on OBS. I also feel it’s Ringo. He was available during the Magic Christian in the evening and it just sounds like Ringo’s playing to me. Paul could keep a basic beat fine enough but he was a little stiff on the kit. Especially back then. He didn’t have the finesse that’s apparent on OBS. At least according to my ears.

You make great videos! Thank you! I suspect that Bob has more information about Ringo leaving the group during the White Album. Information passed down from cat to cat over the years. Bob needs to write a book!

Great video Brian! Re "Something", according the Lewisohn Beatle Recording Sessions plus a piece written by Kevin Howlett... somewhere, the first version of "Something" with Paul on drums was indeed erased by the band in 1969 and started again from scratch some time later - So, it no longer exists. The common bootleg version of "Something" is Take 8 a reduction 8Trk to 8Trk mix down of the final version which includes a jam after the song finishes..

ah yes thank you for this. i seem to remember having a bootleg version of Something, but it's the "long jam" version and not the early take with Paul on drums. Too bad that one doesn't exist. Thanks for the comment!

wow, i never thought that paul played on "Old Brown Shoe" before: I've got and read the 50th anniversary abbey road, but it seems i never payed attention.but i agree, when i think about it, it sounds like him; that makes it next to "Dear Prudence" - including his solo work - my favourite macca drumming...

ps.: its also really an interesting fact considering the paul and george relationship at that time and afterwards....

If you listen to the Isolated track with drums on Dear Proudence you can hear a cut in the tape just before the coda begins. A piano also comes in on the track, and the tone of the drums change, which means the drums after the cut were probably recorded on a later session along with the piano part. A lot of people think Ringo played drums on the coda (with all those Ringo type fills) after returning. It's also been said that all three Beatles were hitting drums during the coda? It sounds like Ringo to me, but it's one of those questions that will probably never be answered for certain? There's also a video of George playing Old Brown Shoe with Paul on drums. They were just learning the song. He was playing about the exact same drum pattern that's on the single.

Good, I'm glad someone else addressed the Dear Prudence drums, with Ringo probably playing the fills. I pretty much had the same comment. Wish I could remember the video that explains this in detail, which included sound samples and whatnot IIRC. EDIT: it was the You Can't Unhear This video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptpxoLKKrqytqGw.html

@@R3TR0R4V3 Yes, I've watched all of 'You Can't Unhear This' videos. He doesn't make a lot of videos, but I'm always happy to get a notification that he has a new video up. The drums during the coda sound like Ringo to me. Though Paul is a decent drummer. I also think Paul was playing the piano part that comes in with the drums at the end. If Paul is playing the piano on that part, he's not playing the drums. But, it's been 65 years, so Paul and Ringo probably don't even remember who played what?

One doesn't replace Charlie Watts or Ringo. As a drummer myself, I don't care for Paul's drumming on Back & Dear Prudence: he doesn't have Ringo's feel. They should have re-recorded those with Ringo. PM is a passable drummer, but he doesn't have the solid feel of Ringo : he's a lot looser in his style of playing. Love the videos, Brian.

Totally respect this comment (especially as you're a drummer). I agree that Ringo could have done just as good a job as Paul, and most likely better. I think it's nice to have a bit of change in the drum feel every once in a while, and that definitely makes Paul's playing interesting to me. But I'm 100% on board with Ringo being the best drummer for any Beatles song. (and I love Charlie's drumming as well. Always blew my mind that it's not Charlie playing on "You Can't Always Get What You Want")

There's a video here on YT that speculates that Ringo overdubbbed the big drum roll near the end of "Dear Prudence". Not sure, but it might be "You Can't Unhear This" channel. They make a convincing case.

Hey Brian, I love your videos man. They are pure entertainment and quality info for me. And I only knew 3/4 of the songs Paul drummed on. I didn't know old brown shoe and didn't know about the slight effort on strawberry fields forever. And I didn't know about this early version of Something with Paul on drums, although with how much stuff I have heard I may have possibly heard it. But please please please Brian can you identify that version of Something further or tell me what to type in KZfaq to find it or do you have a link? I need to hear it now. Thank you in advance and you're really loving the brown Mario outfit aren't you? Lol, so am I, ha ha, it's cool. Craig

Hi Craig, thanks for the comment! I think I misspoke when I said that earlier take with Paul on drums was available on bootleg. Listening to the available bootleg recordings in my collection, there’s just the original take 37 with the long jam at the end which features Ringo on drums. So I guess the version with Paul on drums is just mentioned in the Abbey Road SDE book, but isn’t available unfortunately.

I don't think Paul plays drums during the whole track on Dear Prudence though, specifically the drum fills towards the end. I forget where I saw that at, but if I find it, I'll amend this comment with that info. EDIT:. Here it is, it's this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptpxoLKKrqytqGw.html

It’s actually been proven that Ringo plays drums on Martha. Along with George on guitar. It was long thought that Paul played everything on it (I thought the same). But they have photos of the session with Ringo and George present.

Question:So another thing about old brown shoe.I could always swear I hear Ringo singing,”wear rings on every finger” but I never see that he’s credited. To me, it does not sound like John or Paul. Can anyone confirm or deny?

But mark lewhison also had access to Abbey Road tapes, how can he be wrong with old Brown shoe taking in account that he is a serious researcher ?
@BrianBringelson
@BrianBringelson Жыл бұрын
I believe (but could be wrong) that he had access to most of the tapes known at the time (late 80's). They've since discovered that some of the tapes have lots of stuff at the end of the reel (stuff the record earlier in the session that got recorded over, but was saved after they got the finished take).
