In my area the southern pacific rattlesnake is the predominant species you'll encounter out on the hiking trails. It's April so they'll start coming out from hibernation with their shiny new scales. I see them all the time on morning hikes getting their sun, and enjoy watching them with a respectful distance. Thanks for the up close on the western diamondback, they're definitely interesting.

About them getting into the S or "strike position," that's true. Sometimes they just stay put, coil up, and rattle as if to say "Hey! You can't park here! I was coiled up in the sun here first. Viperidae parking only!"

That is absolutely correct and they will even just sit their doing nothing at all sometimes which makes them awesome animals that they dont always fit into a stereotype. Thanks for watching and commenting

We just scared away a 3’ western diamondback away from our patio in Tuolumne County, California near Yosemite NP. They’re pretty common around here and not usually a problem. My cat had it wedged in a tight spot and it wasn’t happy and was rattling with its distinctive warning. We just squirted it with the garden hose until it went on it’s way, no harm done to either of us. Fascinating creatures.

I have a baby western diamondback rattler and I absolutely love her she is a beautiful little girl but she is spoiled. I live in South Africa so here there is no anti venom and little miss Lexa is treated with the utmost respect. I have had several different problems like getting the perfect plants and sand and stones for her....yes she lives in 100% natural USA desert with stones from the desert lol. Ps guys to keep a calm and happy snake make sure they feel at home in their enclosure. She loves sun bathing but feeds around 11:30pm on Saturdays. Guys before even getting a viper remember this don't be mistaken one screw up and disaster hits you. And remember a rattlesnake doesn't always warn you before they bite be safe and love your pets.

@@ReptileRangers hi I am have had lots of different vipers I and after feeding their mostly lazy but my western diamondback is actually aggresive. I wonder why? She isn't stressed or anxious just being a little cow 😂

@@Tigerssnakes By nature they do tend to be more defensive than some other species. Now we have several that are really layed back and some that are complete pistols. So it also depends on the personality of the animal as well.

@@ReptileRangers i just went herping an hour ago and i saw one of those rattlesnakes. I also sadly saw a DEAD snapping turtle who got attacked by a invasive reptile

@@ReptileRangers I JUST SAW A RED EARED SLIDER (in my area they are very invasive because the pond i found him in has no larger predators or venomus snakes also this wasnt the same spot i recently went herping) i dont think anything bad will happen but i will keep checking on that pond to make sure that he hasnt reproduced

rattlesnakes are the gentlemen of the apex hunters. they literally do everything in their power so they DON'T have to bite you. If humans were as considerate and good at communication as rattlesnakes, we'd all be better off. also as a side note-the demographic for the type of folks who get bit: Male, ages 18-25, INTOXICATED. So.....yeah, there is that. Basically, don't be a stupid young drunk guy and go messing with them and chances are good you will be just fine.

Well this is for education of the species of rattlesnake, and just for your education he was actually over 4 ft away from the snake. Its all about perception of the camera angle. Thanks for commenting

No not all snakes are live bearing. Oviparous is an egg layer like a chicken. Ovoviviparous is animals that produce eggs and the babies hatch from the eggs within the mother coming out as technically live birthing. Viviparous is a true live birther like most mammals.
