Sure, the beginning of the year is usually a dump zone for things the studios want us to forget as quickly as humanly possible, but Madame Web - Sony's latest foray into their Spider-Man-less live-action SpiderVerse, will always be remembered as one of the worst - and most compellingly awful - films of all time. It's a perfect storm of terrible writing, baffling performances, and the wildest, most nonsensical visual style a superhero film has ever had.
On this month's Too Many Tapes, let's take a look at all of the things that make Madame Web horrible, as well as the reasons that might be okay.

When I saw Madame Web I heard the voice of my writing mentor yelling at me over and over again: *“THIS IS NOT HOW TO WRITE A MOVIE! It defies format! The characters are flat! You want to write?! WRITE BETTER THAN THIS!”* At least Batman and Robin was cheesy fun. Madame Web was torture.

idk.. knowing what happened behind the scenes and the mistakes the studio made in both pre and post-production, i give it a great deal of leeway. it had worse luck from the get-go than the original Suicide Squad. it's a fun enough movie for having been ripped apart by its creators and barely surviving whatever the film version of open-heart surgery is. let's not forget this was meant to be an entirely different movie, but the writers accidentally placed it over a decade out of sync with the other characters and story elements it was meant to align with causing re-shoots and whole swaths of the story being torn out and rewritten and reassembled to try to make its own timeline work. there are some obviously post-added scenes with obvious ADR'd dialogue (mostly involving the poorly written antagonist) that are a bit laughable to be in such a high-budget movie, but again.. open-heart surgery.. and again, it survived. it's not the worst movie ever made. not even close. it's fun-enough and with a fun-enough premise to just turn your analytical and film-analysis brain off and just enjoy a creative comic-book story on the screen.

This came out recently? The mist and characters moving around super fast thing makes it feel very early 2000s, like the "Beastmaster" tv show

I already thought you had a talent for film criticism but wasn't sure because discussing low budget children's religious VHSs are a bit different than reviewing a "feature" film like this. This is the first of your videos I've seen that reviews a contemporary movie and you have some really good thoughts here. I agree it's fascinating in a kind of sad way to see the gross oversaturation and cheapening of the superhero "genre," start to crumble and disintegrate in flight. Personally, I've been disgusted by Marvel movies since "age of ultron," and have largely viewed them as formulaic screen-filler for "nerds," to cosplay at the theater. In the decade or so since that movie released, I've been increasingly surprised at how well these movies keep doing. Movie goers have told studios in no uncertain terms that they don't care about innovation or creativity. They want the same beats in the same overlong 2-3 hour packages and they want several a year. Naturally the studios are more than happy to indulge this request as it greatly streamlines their turnaround time in cranking these cookie cutter pieces out and the audience keeps paying for it. But such a flimsy relationship can't last forever, despite it being shockingly resiliant over the last decade+. As such, it's very interesting seeing some of this start to manifest in this movie. It's almost like the main artistic statement here is Sony demonstrating how completely they can strip the "superhero" film down into vaguely reocogisable chunks and throw them at the audience to see what kind of facsimile of a movie forms in the pile of resultant slop

This movie was like when you read your friend's passion project, and you KNOW they had something in mind, and they were just incapable of expressing it in a way that another human being will enjoy. And you feel bad. But you at least respect that they tried, and you encourage them to take your notes and go back and - maybe, someday, with time and hindsight - do better later. EDIT: At one point in the video, you assume the main character is supposed to be fun and cool and failing, but like . . . I'm almost certain she's supposed to be absolutely unworkable and unable to function. I think that's a choice that *didn't work*, but I think the writer and actress both made that choice on purpose. Something admirable about that. I dunno.
