Native plants can withstand sub-zero temperatures, summer heat, drought, and insect predation all without supplemental water, fertilizers, or sprays. Native plants also co-evolved relationships with native insects to form the food chain foundation that supports butterflies, bees, birds, and predators. Learn the principles of sustainable landscaping and how you can do your part to reduce resource inputs and create habitat. Drew Lathin is the owner of Creating Sustainable Landscapes, LLC where he utilizes native plants to create beautiful and ecologically restorative landscapes for residential, commercial, and public spaces that support wildlife, reduce resource inputs, and create healthy outdoor living spaces. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This guy's garden is fantastic. I went there one day and his garden was filled with butterflies, birds and bugs of all kinds. The smell of sweet was everywhere. It was a treat going there.

This is all right out of Dr, Douglas Tallamy's mouth...thanks for sharing the message spread, but it is really good to acknowledge the people who did the painstaking research to discover the importance of native plants.

I work at a garden center that sells a few invasive plants and I always inform customers and encourage them to buy native plants. Not many people want to buy Japanese Barberry after learning it doubles the amount of ticks in your yard!

Agreed that it never hurts having more people spreading the word since a lot of it is lack of knowledge honestly. Also agreed that Doug Tallamy's lecture was really awesome and have several more saved. Thanks for the heads up on that 👍

If the kingfisher drops the goldfish in the right place, you have potentially released one of the most invasive animals in the US...look at the Mississippi and Columbia...PLEASE leave the goldfish in Asia!

My state's nickname is also what it has destroyed; the prairie. I have all but one of the plants mentioned at the beginning in my yard. I was so happy when my chickadees fledged the other day..... only to be immediately killed by the neighbor's cat. I just sat on the ground and cried after seeing the video on my outdoor camera. I monitored that nest for days, chasing away sparrows and putting the baby who fell out back in the nest. I've never hated a cat so much. My butterfly bush stays, sorry. Th adults love it & i have plenty of other plants to feed to the kids. And WHY is it that every ad before or during videos about native plants is for a riding lawn mower?! UGH.
