"You Should Be Dancing" is a single by the Bee Gees, from the album Children of the World, released in 1976. It hit #1 for one week on the American Billboard Hot 100, #1 for seven weeks on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, and in July the same year, reached #5 on the UK Singles Chart. The song also peaked at #4 on the Billboard R&B chart. It was this song that first launched the Bee Gees into disco. It was also the only track from the group to top the dance chart.
The song was their third Billboard Hot 100 #1 and their sixth #1 in Canada. It ended up the year as the #31 song of the year on the Hot 100. In the '70s some of the Bee Gees' songs were deemed too uptempo for AC/Easy Listening Radio which led to "You Should Be Dancing" only reaching #25 on that chart. It also hit #4 in Ireland. In Australia, where the brothers spent a number of years in their youth, it managed only to nick the top 20.
"You Should Be Dancing" is known today as the first chart-topper in which Barry Gibb uses his now-trademark falsetto in a lead vocal (he had previously used it on the top-10 "Nights on Broadway" and on "Fanny (Be Tender with My Love)"). Earlier songs, such as "Jive Talkin'", had Gibb use a melodic blue-eyed soul vocal style.
The song was prominently featured in the movie Saturday Night Fever and appears on its soundtrack album. Live performances of "You Should Be Dancing" during the 1979 Spirits Having Flown tour featured the Bee Gees' younger sibling, Andy Gibb, on backing vocals.
The Boston Celtics also play this song when they are about to win a basketball game in a convincing manner accompanied by the ever popular "Gino Time" video from the television show American Bandstand. Recently, the Tampa Bay Rays have started playing the song at home games between innings.
The song was also featured at the end of the film Despicable Me, in which the minions replace ballet music with the song so everyone (including both a reluctant-at-first Gru and a stranded Vector, who is still on the moon) can dance.
Saturday Night Fever is a 1977 American dance film directed by John Badham and starring John Travolta as Tony Manero, an emotionally immature young man whose weekends are spent visiting a local Brooklyn discotheque; Karen Lynn Gorney as Stephanie Mangano, his dance partner and eventual friend; and Donna Pescow as Annette, Tony's former dance partner and would-be girlfriend. While in the disco, Tony is the king. His care-free youth and weekend dancing help him to temporarily forget the reality of his life: a dead-end job, clashes with his unsupportive and squabbling parents, racial tensions in the local community, and his associations with a gang of macho friends.
The Bee Gees were a pop music group that was formed in 1958. The group's line-up consisted of brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The trio were successful for most of their decades of recording music, but they had two distinct periods of exceptional success: as a rock act in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies; Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the late 1970s and 1980s. They wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists.
Musicians include Maurice Gibb (bass guitar); Dennis Bryon (drums); Alan Kendall, Barry Gibb (guitar); Blue Weaver (keyboards); George Perry, Joe Lala, Stephen Stills (percussion); Albhy Galuten, Bee Gees, Karl Richardson (producer); and
Barry Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb (vocals).

I remember in my 20’s going out Friday & Saturday nights to the clubs in Brooklyn & Queens, meeting girls & dancing. I worked as a bouncer at the Executive Suite in Queens and at after hours joints from 4am to 8am. Those days we had real music, & dancing, meeting people, socializing. Today that is gone. The online world has changed our society into electronic drones, stuck in a computer generated fantasy world. I’m glad I grew up during this time.

And according to many the directors wanted to cut out the solo dance scenes it was only to the insistence of John Travolta that the scenes should be included in the movie.

Damn Travolta's got the moves on the dance floor. My only regret is that I wasn't born during the disco era. Things and attire looks so cool and the bee gees are utterly awesome, I'm 42 & my gf who is an incredible and a very warm and kind hearted woman is 22 years my senior. She remembers & tells me that the 70's were pretty groovy times.

I knew that this would be the greatest disco hit of all time when I purchased the "Main Course" album in 1976, before disco blew the roof off the country. I was a BG's fan from the 60's. I could not have known what was to come with Saturday Night Fever. I went out dancing every weekend in 1976,....... for once I was way ahead of my time. Just an old guy now. But believe me kids.THIS WAS THE TIME TO BE ALIVE

Yes it was. It was 82 when I was legally old enough, but was going some at 16. The Playlate in Chattanooga. I think this movie had a huge impact on me, as so did my more favorite, Urban Cowboy. I'm a Country boy, milked, hauled hay, gardens, operated different equipment, so I was at home with n country or dance clubs. I even had a Don Johnson outfit, as Miami Vice was it then. I tell Young people often, if I could take them back to the 70's or 80's, they'd never come back to today. No cell phones either,! How did we ever meet people!!? *Wink*

@@jeffcampbell2710 Yes. I was a city boy. But it mattered not. WE all had the music,... and the mating game. Not so today. Very different world. My son prefers the "old school" ways, but he can't find others who also feel that way.

When this movie came out I was like 11 and the local radio station was giving the movie soundtrack away if you were the right caller. My older female cousin had been trying all night because in her words " she would die if she didn't get it" Finally she just gave up so I asked her for the number and called and on my first try I won. You could choice between album or 8 track. I got the album and she drove me downtown to pick it up. I gave it to her of course. Damn thing was the only thing I've ever won . Better times back then. Wish we could rewind the clock sometimes. Keep dancing everybody you never get to old✌️😁

Urban Cowboy too. It's probably a little better, not much. But I'm country. I hit dance clubs and Country clubs both for dancing, just a lil different. Both played Drop the Bomb, Ride the White Horse, The Roof is on Fire. Also the Gap band, Midnight Star, Chaka Chan, but the country club played country too. I had 3 favs, Fantasy 2000 (the fantasy was was better) like we partied harder to 1999 than we did in 1999. The Playlate club, 3 clubs in one and Rock n country club. Great times, better days and happier people.
