Together, the three 'Before' films paint a picture of the romantic ideal in conflict with harsh truth. Capturing the essence of real relationships as they evolve through time, if not a true reflection. And that's what makes them so profoundly unique and wonderful, even within the context of Richard Linklater's intensely humanist filmography.
MUSIC:
'Come Here' - Kath Bloom
'Je t'aime tant'; 'An Ocean Apart'; 'A Waltz for a Night' - Julie Delpy
'The Best Summer of My Life' - Graham Reynolds (Before Midnight OST)

I think the series will be complete with a forth part. We rarely get to see an elderly couple portrayed in the media. I think it would be sweet to see them as little old people still in love, fully reflecting on love. Ethan Hawke said it was complete because it came full circle with the middle aged arguing couple on the train in the first one. But also on the train in the first one is an elderly couple sitting side by side quietly and contently.

"Before Midnight" is very realistic and apt conclusion to the trilogy.Realistic look at at a long lasting relationship. There is no such thing as a perfect relationship or a perfect couple. But couples who truly love each other, argue and fight about things but in the end, stay together and move forward together. A perfect blend of love, frustration, honesty and acceptance. NOT because they're getting older and bored and have nothing else to pursue. BUT because time has taught them about the realities of life and love and that includes moving forward and staying together as imperfect individuals in an imperfect relationship in an imperfect world. A perfect blend of love, frustration, honesty and acceptance. You can't have 1 without the other 3. Otherwise, the relationship won't last.

@Chris M I guess you have a very idealistic view of marriage. So word of caution to you, if you think that real marriage isn't like that, don't get married. The one you "marry and spend the rest of your life with" is not exactly the one you "married on your weeding day". Being married, staying married goes beyond passion, laughter, and romance. SPECIALLY WHEN LIFE BECOMES REAL AS IN YOU HAVE TO RAISE A CHILD, MOUNTING EXPENSES, PILING DEBT, CAREER CHANGE, VERY LITTLE TIME FOR YOURSELF etc etc. YES, THAT IS MARRIED LIFE. It is full of ups and downs. You have to learn to take the good with the bad. It entails a lot of understanding, compromises, acceptance and patience. That's why the vows you exchange include "for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, through good times and bad times".
@ponypower8

@Chris M Hahaha why so serious lol? Hahaha you have the nerve to tell me what you just said?? I'll tip my hat to you and bow to your "perfect life". YOU really have a lot to learn in life. And you really have to improve your reading comprehension. Oh brother smh. Haha. AND YOU say you're married YET you also said "I'VE SEEN MARRIED COUPLES". Yeah, right, Hans CA hehe. Good luck brother. BTW, I am not buried in debt nor am I sad, nor am I depressed or anything like that. I am content with my life, my job, my pay. Good luck to you. Oh brother lol. And don't even bother engaging me again because I won't even bother to waste my time to justify any of your delusions of grandeur and unrealistic statements with a reply from me. Get a life hehe.

"They´v loved each others for 18 years and been together for 9 years" that really hit me. I was frustrated when I first time saw the third film but after I watched it again even though they were arguing they loved each others still. I really hope they make a fourth part.

I really like the way you put it that the trilogy is like a painting and not a photograph. This is just so true and exactly why I love the trilogy so much. The painting actually reveals more than what a photograph can ever capture. Before Midnight is my favorite, although this is a close call for each one of the said trilogy is special in their way. But, the conflicts and arguments are exactly the building blocks of a solid relationship, fostering growth, understanding, and bonding. By the third film, the love between the two characters matured like a fine wine but is tinged with a sadness forged by compromises of hurdles in real life. The rosy-tinted glasses were long gone. True love is actually imperfect. An imperfect relationship between two imperfect human beings in an imperfect world.

Whats your take on 'Before Sunrise, Sunset and Midnight' trilogy? I guess the movies touch a very important and sensitive issue, is 'romance and love' overrated? Who do you think was wrong among them? I think that the girl is more to be blamed for their crumbling relationship. Even the astrologer hinted at this that she is needed to get in peace with herself in order to accept the awkwardness of life. In my perspective, the girl's strong sense of 'biased feminism' had made her emotionally unstable. In the first film, she is this innocent, naive, all-giving girl, but by the second film she (like the boy) is trapped in the past but (unlike the boy) has failed further in not accepting others individuality and thus is emotionally and physically unsatisfied. In comparison, the boy had amateurishly tried to move on. He is in better command of his self may be because he is not all revolting and though he is facing a failed marriage, he at least has found the source of joy - his son and his art. He has his insecurities as human but still, I think he has been shown in a better light than the girl. I am kinda depressed after seeing the movie, romance is a double-edged sword, but then again what choice did they have, they fell for each other and if one becomes over-critical of others, they will end up being single. It's a tough call, to fall or not to fall? to be romantic or to be analytic?

See...I just enjoyed watching it...and basic thing I got to know....that "words make people close"....they met and just talked about anything and everything....they lived a dream ....fell in love....all because ...they wanted to just stay and talk..isn't that magical...?? Love is so simple.....it's just a warm feeling in your heart when u r next to that person....that's it...it doesn't need to be judged...
@saurabhsinha9952
@saurabhsinha9952 5 жыл бұрын
my analogies are no judgements, i am speaking at large about the whole trilogy. The first part is just pure magic, its beautiful and yes you are right 'its love'. but by the last part, life happened. So ofcourse love is beautiful but I was just wondering if love is over-hyped? is it enough to manage the whole life? Because in their case, they were constantly bikering. I think passion and rationality are equially needed to have a happy life because 'just love' can overwhelm you. Just a thought, i am not yet 60 so cant say i am totally right (:

@@saurabhsinha9952 I agree with u....but this trilogy has depicted....a relationship with complete honesty .... like "the real is not perfect"...just simple......then again life needs certain sweet moments along with rational and practical approach.... ☺️

But but... It's real! :P I watched it with my sweetheart of 5 years early on in our relationship, and I kinda looked at it like this: 1st film: our current reality and 3rd like a warning about what might/will happen eventually, in our own way that we'll need to work through and address but accept it will continue to happen at least from time to time. As we've been living together for a while now it already started to resemble the last film, although it was rarely that serious, and if it was, that was just for a very short time (sometimes as short as few minutes) and then one or both of us finds a way to solve the issue and move on together somehow. I guess our willingness to work on our relationship as much as we can despite everything (the pull is helping and it happened to be strong like never before for both of us) and never lose ourselves in the process has been working well so far.

Oh wow, I came here again. It was shocking to find this comment. I've actually broken up with that man a few months ago, as the work on the relationship was too much, futile, to say the least, and I should have given up much earlier. Now, the fate seemed to give me a real connection this time, deepest I ever had with anyone, and special in many ways, with another man, who came back into my life just a month after I let go of the previous, even though I wanted to be alone. Now, it's scary how we resemble Jesse and Celine, I'm even from Europe, and he's American. Though, we were 10 years ago "just friends", and suppressed our romantic urges, Before Sunset is now so emotional as it's quite relatable to how I feel. And it is real, the trilogy, since these types of connections *are rare* as Celine says once, but they can happen nonetheless, and it happened to me finally, even these types of comebacks, I just feel comfortable with him, to not be too inhibited anytime.
