Great video for sure and wicked presenting skills. Am impressed with it. As someone who works in the railway industry I have noticed all the fares mentioned are for anytime or peak fares though, so it may be worth mentioning that when quoting or just say, depending on time of day travelling, tickets can vary from say £8 - £12 for the St Pancras to Gatwick Thameslink route for example. Many off-peak fares are a lot cheaper than quoted. Also for Stansted Airport there is an express coach from St Pancras too costing £8-£10 a single and £15/£16 return no matter time of day or night. Keep up the great work 👍🏼😃

CHEAT for getting to/from Stansted: Buy an advance fare for the day you're travelling from Stansted to BIRMINGHAM with Virgin Trains. They cost as little as £10.90 each way (less with a railcard) and you need only travel between Stansted and central London which is completely flexible! A pretty cheeky way of undercutting the fare, just make sure to book the correct dates and bring any railcards with you!

Lol, bro I'm sorry but I've been in HK in 2017. The price of your studio apartment in a 40 story building gets me a 3 bedroom house with a 500 sq meters of backyard and nice front lawn, a two car garage and I still have some change left to fill those garages with two pre-owned but not too old cars. Welcome to Texas. So don't brag about cheap public transit, because other people have stuff to brag about as well.

Soooo annoying that it costs £32 return from Stansted but only £24 return from Luton despite the fact that they're the same distance (in mileage) away from their central London destinations! Essex gets a bum deal when it comes to the train services and ticket prices generally (thank-you so much Abellio Greater Anglia - not!). I can speak from experience as I come from NW London, lived out in Hertfordshire for 10 yrs, lived back in London for 2 yrs and been up in North Essex for the past 11 years now! Back in August I took my daughters (9 & 7) on a day trip to the Science Museum, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Tower Bridge using the tube and river bus along the way. That part was fine. It was their first visit to London and they loved it! What spoilt the day was, you guessed it, the Greater Anglia train services. Utter chaos, delays, disgusting & rickety old carriages and not enough of them - trying to get home we had to stand from Liverpool Street all the way to Shenfield where eventually some people got off there to get the connecting lines to Southend etc. My point is, we have to pay so much more for our fares to even get into London and the services are shambolic. It puts you off even thinking about going for a day out again - which upsets me because London is my home-town. It really cheers me up watching your videos though and reminds me how great the city is and has always been. Here's hoping we can get down to visit & explore some more soon. My girls need to hone their 'street-sense' London-style just like I did years ago LOL ;) :D

Most National Rail services accept Oyster and Contactless. Be aware these fares are different from tube fares. It's best to check the TfL website before you travel but I think Southern accept Oyster. The only exceptions are Heathrow Express, Virgin Trains and Southeastern HighSpeed (you can still use regular Southeastern)

If you want to know why there are so many stations in Hounslow just watch London Londonist History of Stations in Hounslow!
@hostilepancakes
@hostilepancakes 8 жыл бұрын
+1 A long history indeed, but I think Syrus means the frequency of stops in the Hounslow area. I don't really know why there are such frequent stops, but I do know that it was originally the company that built the District line (the Metropolitan District Railway Company) that built the line to Hounslow, and ran services on it, until the day that the District branch to South Acton (now part of the Overground's Richmond-Stratford line) stopped running any and all services. However, on the Hounslow branch, the Piccadilly Railway had been running services for a couple of decades, and took over all services to Hounslow. In 1977, the Underground extended the Piccadilly to Hatton Cross, then to Heathrow Terminals 2-3 (R.I.P. Terminal 1) by 1979. In the '80s, the one-way loop of track at Terminal 4 opened. Then, in 2008, the branch to Terminal 5 opened, and as of August 2016, is the newest part of the Underground to open. (continued)
@hostilepancakes
@hostilepancakes 8 жыл бұрын
The former above ground Hounslow West station use to be called Hounslow Barracks, and a branch of the Hounslow line ran to a now-disused Hounslow Town station. That's a relative summary of the Londonist video about the Tube's history in Hounslow, so go watch the video for a better history. I can't remember exactly what year the Underground came to Hounslow, but I do know it was between 1877 and 1884.

If you can try to go to Heathrow or City. Stansted and Gatwick are really far from central and can cost a lot more to get to central London. City is in the heart of the financial district and Heathrow is obviously one of the busiest airports in the world with great tube and national rail links. Even though the Gatwick Express takes you to Victoria, Gatwick isn't even within the M25 boundary, and lets not even talk about Stansted which is millions of miles away from London. p.s. Southend is irrelevant so don't even plan to travel from there.

I remembered you saying in another video that taking the buses around Central were cheaper than the Tube. Does any of the airports you have mentioned have a direct bus line to take to Central? Maybe I missed it if you did. But, I would like to thank you for this. I am trying to get everything in order so I can visit London next year (if not later this year) and this is really helpful!

how far out can an airport be to still bear the name of the city it allegedly serves? are southend and luton really london airports? the closest city to gatwick is brighton
@cityhacksLondon
@cityhacksLondon 8 жыл бұрын
I know it's a bit silly but yes they are classed as London airports because they have an easy direct train into the centre of London
@NeoDerGrose
@NeoDerGrose 8 жыл бұрын
So why didn't you tell us how to get to an from Southend? You also forgot to mention Heathrow Connect, a service between Heathrow Express and the tube, price and time. But I guess in the future this will be obsolete, to my knowledge they both will become Crossrail (sorry, Elisabeth Line) and therefor also serve multiple stations in the heart of the city as well as in the docklands. Sadly they won't stopp at City Airport also they would run by very close.

Heathrow Terminal 1 was one of five airport terminals at Heathrow Airport, serving London, the capital city of the United Kingdom. Terminal 1 closed on 29 June 2015. Prior to its closure, it was only occupied by Oneworld member British Airways which operated just 20 daily flights to 9 destinations. Its demolition enabled construction of the second phase of Terminal 2

Stansted has to be the worst airport on the planet. Easily is in my experience. Offers the least amount of service for the most money they can extract from you. The level of neglect is close to criminal. Look what happened when the bus caught fire. Chaos. Anything worse and they would have been responsible for deaths. This airport is so bad it makes me angry.
