This song is about a collision between 2 tribes of Mardi Gras Indians. The song was called Jak a Mo and was first released in 1953 by Sugar Boy and the cane cutters. It didn't even make the charts. It was redone by The Dixie Cups ( all girl band ) and became an international hit in 1967. It was done again by The bell Stars that your watching.

This song has two memories for me. First, it's the song used in the opening title sequence of the movie "Rain Man."However, in late May 1989 I was hired to be the overnight announcer/engineer at 107.1 WKPL-FM in Platteville, Wis. At the time the station played a Top 40 format and used reel-to-reel tape automation. When I walked into the station late on a Friday night to start my training, this song was playing on air. What a fun and sometimes challenging 18-month stint I would have at WKPL and it's sister station 1590 WTOQ-AM. I do miss those days working in radio.BTW: I was a journalism/technical communications student at UW-Platteville at the time.

I remember I was at a Grateful Dead concert I think it was 1986. It was in August on a day musta been 100° with high humidity at Giants stadium in NJ. And later in the evening the sky opened up and it rained like I've never seen b4 it was a monsoon , and most welcome !! And the Dead suddenly broke out into this tune while playing under a tarp , it was the very best moment I ever had at a Dead concert. 50,000+ people singing along with this song while getting destroyed by the rain , something I'll NEVER forget.

Nor did I as didn't watch music videos, nor see the movie 'til years later, tho' I did (and still do) have the 45. When I found out a 12" single had been released, I got ahold of one only to find out that they had re-mixed it for the 12" (which was not uncommon) and added vocals which for me totally ruined it.

The story of this record: It was recorded in 1982. The group had broken up by the time it was put on the Rain Man soundtrack. The singer in the video is Jennie Matthias (aka Jennie McKeown), who is the singer on the record, but nobody else from the band appeared in the video because the band didn’t exist anymore.

I was the projectionist for this movie when my public library screened it a year or so after the theatrical release. Had to run back and forth between two projectors for alternating reels. This song is burned in my head. Even though we only showed the movie once. Songs land harder when you're a teen. Hiring a dancer to stand there and act like he has autism, however, is a casting choice best left behind in the '80s.

Few days ago I started singing this melody and it's repeating all the time without reason in my mind.. or maybe there is a reason.. sweet 80'is!
I was a 12 year-old kid living in Hawaii when this song came out. It was HUGELY popular there, because the “locals” (a.k.a. Asian people trying to act like they’re Hawaiian) thought that the song was made by Hawaiians and the lyrics were Hawaiian. All the kids my age knew the lyrics, word for word. It’s quite funny to me looking back, realizing that the song has absolutely nothing to do with Hawaii.

You do it so well that I really believe in it. Bravo: The Belle Stars. Grand-Papa Mario 06/16/1955 P/S: I wish you had the courage to tell me what you think.
