Known amongst ringers as one of the finest 8's in England, the heavy 8 at OLEM were all cast in 1895 by John Taylor & Co. With a tenor of 31 and a half hundredweight they are the 8th heaviest ring of 8 hung for change ringing.
The bells themselves are relatively easy to ring for their weight, however the back 2 are somewhat of a challenge. Further, the front bells are a little flighty due to the long draught. The ringing chamber is a vast space, with an open gallery to the West looking into the church.
The bells are hung in a large H frame below the tracery windows. Before the 1990s the chamber was open into the spire, however there is now a floor above the bells. Above this is a cavernous open space with the windows blocked up, and a superb view up into the spire. Here an antenna for the radio station Cambridge 105 rises into the darkness above.
Unfortunately both of my cards corrupted around 20 minutes into the quarter peal, and instead of making the video with just one camera angle, I decided to use the footage I had anyway. Therefore the ringing is a little patchy in places as the ringers get settled, however it is an extremely good effort for these bells. This was the tenor ringers first time turning it into a quarter peal.
