The bells of Salzburg Cathedral, dedicated to Saints Rupert and Virgil, solemnly toll for the announcement of the Solemnity of the Assumption on 14 August 2023 at 3pm.
The concert includes seven bells, two of which (b flat, e flat) are historical, cast in 1628 by Salzburg founders Wolfgang II and Johann Neidhart (spared from requisition, the bell tower housed two others, donated to another parish). The other five (e flat, g flat, d flat, g flat, a flat) were added in 1961, cast by the Salzburg firm Oberascher, to make up for the previous concert (also by Oberascher) requisitioned in 1943. For the new bells, an ultra-heavy baroque 'Salzburger Domrippe' was designed especially for the cathedral. The result was bells of absolute quality and unprecedented power, which are to all intents and purposes the best casting the foundry has ever produced. The plenum, which almost annihilates the historic bells, is a breathtaking sight to hear, whether from the square or from the surrounding heights.
The visit to the bell tower was organised by the Italian Association of Bell-Ringers, who made a pleasure visit to Salzburg on 13-14 August 2023.
