Today, we'll take a look at a knife that's proof that sometimes, less is more, and enjoy the shrunken size and improved solidity of the Benchmade Mini Bugout.

I don't get why people are so phobic towards small knives, I love them. If I'm gonna do some real work I'll bust out a fixed blade, who does super heavy work with a folding knife anyways??
@quinnstevenson78794 жыл бұрын
I have larger hands, so I like the larger handles, but that’s the only advantage I get from larger folders. Though I also love smaller knives like my pilar, too

Unless you are taking out Tangos, what can't you cut in normal life with a sub 3 inch blade? If I have to cut anything thicker I will use a more appropriate tool

@Adam Cosper I chose phobic because it's irrational. Nothing wrong with big folders but a fixed knife does most things better than any big folder except maybe pocketability.

@Adam Cosper No nothing irrational with carrying it, my point was that so many people despise and disregard small knives irrationally. I love me a small knife and the compactness of folding knives is the only reason I carry them, but I don't tend to carry larger folders due to personal taste.

I actually like the orange because it's a "safe" color. When I get this knife out in front of people it doesn't seem scary because it's safety orange, like a traffic cone. The murdery factor on this is extremely low which is nice as someone who works in an office.

Cory Smith hilarious and accurate! Murdery factor. Love it

I’ve noticed the same effect to a lesser degree with wooden scales. My North Fork or even my mini crooked river, don’t seem to garner unwanted attention if I use them for some utility task out in public, the way a black G10 knife will.

After resisting getting a Bugout for almost 2 years, I relented and gave myself one for Christmas. I was going to get some orange scales until this one was announced. It's smaller that my Mini Griptilian and exactly the same size as my CRK Inkosi small which is about as small a knife as I would would go for EDC. Normally I have to loosen the pivot about 5 to 10 degrees so that the blade will fall shut, not this time. My Mini Grip doesn’t fall shut without a little wrist and I thought it might have been because the blade was so light, I guess not. I’m very happy that Benchmade produced this one and selected my favorite color for the scales. I swapped the hardware with my blue Bugout for a complementary contrasting accent on each knife. This Mini might wind up in a tie for third position with the Bugout in my extensive collection behind my Brown Exponent and Benchmade 943.

I put in new springs, polished the tang & lock bar... and through trial and error found that it is the smoothest with No Lube... Actually a little graphite from a pencil worked the best... I'm going to order some graphite lube. I think the Mini would be a great EDC for my wife, when they release a black scale. Great Videos!

I screenshot this and superimposed it, and it appears the length of the cutting surface of the blade is nearly the same size as the Para 3’s. Maybe a mm or 2 shorter. Is that accurate? Or is it a bigger difference in real life due to the camera angle? UPDATE: According to Knifecenter, the cutting edge on P3 = 2.63” and the cutting edge on BM = 2.75”

The configuration tool still doesn't have the 940😑 The company as a whole I feel very mixed on but I do really like the 940. The reverse Tanto shape is perfect for what I use it for. Protech Newport is very good and much better in other ways but it doesn't have quite the belly of the 940 although it's 99% as good at my tasks with the wonderful action and Protech quality. Even though I don't have any restrictions on knives here, I think I may be purchasing a calmigo as well.

I told them my concerns about using titanium for the lock pin and they just ignored me. They upgraded me to a 940 but it was like sandpaper with bad lock stick as well, along with very deep machining marks on the blade and an off center edge. The Rogue bladework scales are really nice, but be prepared to wait a long time for them. I’ve ordered scales for the full size bugout from them in the past and it took about 5 months to get both orders. I’d also recommend some flytanium screws for the bugout too if you want to customize it further.

I personally dont get the attraction to the Bugout. I owned the BHQ blackout version and it was fine, it cut nicely but it felt kinda flimsy and the action was nowhere near as good as the mini Freek. It got a lil better when I upgraded to G10 scales but I still found myself picking up the Delica more. Ultimately I sold it and still dont regret it. Plus I've been having a rash of my axis lock knives breaking omega springs and the wont send replacements, I have to mail my knife in. I dont really see a mini bugout being better since I thought the OG was too small and I only have medium sized hands

So when will a mini bailout be a thing. Or an extra large bugout. Or the medium bugout.

This is the medium bug out

Your scope of people who use knives is a little slim, Nick. I'm a scenic carpenter, I make sets for TV and build them in dark sound stages. There is no part of my job, or my life, where a high vis scale is a bad idea.

But on a mini Bugout? Seems like a cooor for the full sized one, to me.

I get especially frustrated when Nick reviews a hard use knife or a knife with a non-EDC use-case and complains that it doesn't work well for EDC tasks. Guess what? That's not what it was made for. That's like reviewing an F1 car and bitching that it makes a poor grocery getter.

Realize that I said I'd like other options, not that they're bad people for making orange knives and they should feel bad :)

Quite the hefty butterfly tax

The price tag makes this one hard for me to swallow. One hog can do a made in the USA knife with CPM 20 CV and G 10 it’s very hard for me to spend $136 on a bench made with S 30 V and FRN.
