Enter the mind of a bored teenager to discover what happens in the brain when we daydream and find out what purpose it serves.
--
On a daily basis, you spend between a third and half of your waking hours daydreaming. That may sound like a huge waste of time, but scientists think it must have some purpose, or humans wouldn’t have evolved to do so much of it. So, what exactly happens in the brain while you daydream? Elizabeth Cox takes a closer look at the science of daydreaming through the mind of a teenager.
Lesson by Elizabeth Cox, directed by Biljana Labović.

I always have multiple stories running in my head. They are often in idle mode, but most of the time they can be triggered just by watching/reading something or when an idea came into my mind. For example, I often pause the video I'm watching just to daydream a scenario inspired by what I've watched/read. And yeah, I often make faces or gestures unintentionally while daydreaming

For those asking about how they are, I try collecting just the most popular novel/publication by the author so not to fill up a shelf so quickly. I organize based on how I interpret them. The shelves are either philosophy, history, fiction/abstract, biographies and poetry. It can be difficult at times because some books fit multiple genres but I go based on what the author is best known for. I try to get 2/3 books a month because it can get expensive or overwhelming to find a copy of something specific. Most recently I found The Road by Cormac Mcarthy a fun book to read because of the pictures I can make with the text. If budget is an issue libraries are good places to try out a new book and seeing if it’s worth your collection of your own.

Being a pre-teen, I daydream a lot. And I sometimes even do make-believe games with my friends based off of it! I think daydreaming while trying to go to sleep helps me relax and flow into that pseudo-sleep state. Not to mention, It helps give dopamine and serotonin, which, like I said, helps calm me down.

Daydreaming can lead you to different fantasy and dream worlds which are way better than this awful reality but too much daydreaming could have bad affects on relationships with your family, friends and your spouse(if you have one) and prevent you from reaching goals as well as having negative affects on your overall happiness, also, If you have a severe mental or physical disability that prevents you from achieving many things in life then daydreaming might help you cope

The difficulty is when it becomes maladaptive. It became a coping mechanism to survive a difficult childhood to be able to escape to somewhere better wherever I was or whatever situation I found myself in. I come up with scenarios that I can’t turn off whether good, bad, or neither. And I can stay stuck there anywhere from a few minutes to hours at a time. I’ve gotten better at daydreaming with intention and using it in the way the video mentions, but to an extent it is also an impediment in actually mobilizing towards achieving that dream. It was mentioned briefly, and while I agree with the video as a whole, I do wish they had touched more on that nuance.

Glad someone mentioned it. Imo this video is very misleading and harmful to people that maladaptive daydream. They'll come to this video and think "Oh so the daydreaming I do is good for me" when it really isn't. It's a better coping mechanism than drugs or alcohol obviously, but still can cause a lot of issues.

Exactly! It's been quite a few days I am practising living in my real life all the time (24*7) as I am sick of wasting time and not chasing my dreams rather than imagining them all the time. Although it's very difficult to not daydream at all, I think it can be great in relationships, in intelligence and in self growth overall as to become the best version of myself to be the happiest and calmest.

I like daydreaming. - I even make a movie story. - I imagine myself being interviewed and answering my own questions. - I am imagining I am living my dream like living as a rich man -with a house, car, and business. - I even do acting while daydreaming like throwing out the lines of the movie I made in my head. - I think of my future self. - I imagine myself doing concert, performing in front of many people. Daydreaming has always been my bestfriend, because daydreaming knows everything you do when there's no people watching you. It is just you between your dreams, hopes, and imaginations without judgement. When the real world limits you, daydreaming does not. I know it's kind of weird for some people, but if anyone is just like me, please do reply, just to confirm and prove to myself that I know I am not alone. 😊 While writing this, I am actually daydreaming 😊

I find myself daydreaming fairly often, but I rarely let myself idealize or romanticize a scenario too extensively. I don’t want to be disappointed by reality 😔 Edit: I also think it’s a bad idea to put real people, in particular, I don’t really know on a pedestal because I’ve fabricated something about them I want to be true.

That is actually what I myself do. Let's say I'm thinking of a what-if scenario of a past event. Recollecting of past friends and such, but wondering what little things could've gone differently. Sometimes I start fantasizing of a possible, more in depth relationship with one of the people being recalled. Quite soon I 'discover' myself thinking that, and shoot it down immeditially. For sure, not setting false expectations is a good reason to be doing that. But I do it because it feels wrong to fantasize like that of others who did not think of me that way. Whenever thinking of things that would cross a hypothetical line, I just get weirded out by it and force myself to stop.

When I'm watching or reading something, sometimes I get up and walk left and right to think of new ideas for fantasy worlds and stories I have in my head, food recipes, or discovering a comeback to an insult I got three years ago. If I was feeling lazy, daydreaming forces me to get up and draw what I'm thinking of, just do something productive. Of course you shouldn't procrastinate on work or not pay attention to school lectures (which I know is easier said than done), but daydreaming when you have nothing else to do or it's the weekends isn't a waste of time. Also, props to the animator and everyone who made the video. :)

I've never been able to daydream. I don't even think very often, my mind is just almost always "blank". I have SDAM and Aphantasia which probably plays a factor. I wish I could day dream :(

Wow, what an interesting video! I never knew that we spend so much of our time daydreaming. I wonder if other species have the same ability?

I’m basically living in a different dimension half of the day and then I cry over scenarios that aren’t even real 🌀

I will usually watch a show or movie and then when it’s done I kind of just continue it in my head and keep the story going 😂 then I will randomly be in class or trying to sleep and just sit there thinking out all the different scenarios or things happening, glad to know I’m not crazy 😂

Yeah I agree this idea and also think that having a vision is so good that we close to our dreams. Therefore I will think that I will become a doctor.

Not just teenagers, I am nearly 70 and its the day-dreaming that got me thinking to keep on learning, exploring. Just an example of what I discovered ... Did you know that the planets, constellations and more out there have to be on similar pathway for one to die as they were at the time of birth? Any mathematicians out there? Lenghty calculations without knowing all the formulas to hand.

I have a psychological condition called maladaptive daydreaming according to psychologists it is not unhealthy and is beneficial in many ways and I agree with it, because it is the basic reason I became a fiction writer and understand things better than other people of my age though like everything else it has it's down sides to.
