I can see the plot now. The boy did not realize that the bento guy's daughter is a terrible cook. He was so famished that he did not realize he was eating something less tasty than rice cakes. Combined with the fact the daughter is a bit of a tomboy, the dad gave up on his daughter ever getting married until today.
