In this video I introduce even more 2D Games made with Unreal Engine that you might not know about.
Companies like Square Enix have pioneered the HD-2D style using Unreal Engine, however there are many more game studios using Unreal Engine for 2D and 2D/3D hybrid games.

what is the difference between your 2 udemy courses?
@CobraCode
@CobraCode 4 ай бұрын
@@jej_x Hey, the Ultimate 2D course covers fundamentals and gives you a strong base understanding by showing you how to make 4 different types of games. The focus is on learning Paper 2D and PaperZD. The action platformer course only concentrates on a single game. Here we won't cover the fundamentals in as much detail and move along pretty fast, but this allows us to go deeper on more advanced gameplay implementation. The focus is more on using PaperZD and making a real game with it.

These videos always give me a massive boost of inspiration. I love it when you said, "You don't necessarily have to go by the book for creating games" because a lot of people (myself included) keep stressing over "Is this the right method?", "Is this wrong?" when it really doesn't have to be that stressful or complicated and in the end doesnt matter that much. Keep on creating and showing people what's possible!
@CobraCode

Awesome :D Yeah I used to be in the same boat always worrying about the perfect method of implementation. But the longer you make games the more you understand that nobody outside of yourself actually cares and the players aren't gonna notice. Of course keeping in line with best practices is great, but not if it paralyzes you and prevents you from actually making stuff!

hey, I've studied software engineering on uni and work as a software engineer(junior). From talking with older, more experienced devs, they tend to say that making games is both hard and easy. Unlike other types of software, you have complete freedom on how to make it. The hard part is making it all come together.

It's incredible what unreal is capable of. I really like how particle effects and 2d characters in a 3d space are handled. Games like octopath traveler really do show how stunning the environments can get. I've seen some examples like recreating pokemon towns in the octo artstyle, but no tutorials so far showing how they pulled it off

Recently started getting into game dev with Unreal but then started to get 'which-engine-should-I-choose' paralysis, because I don't want to have to learn a new engine if I decide I want to make 2D games. The amount of stuff to learn in each engine is daunting! Ultimately I don't want to feel like my investment in an engine doesn't limit me from doing what I want--even getting a job in the industry. Your videos make me realize that I can stop worrying about what engine to use and keep going with Unreal

Glad to hear the video helped you make a decision :) Yeah if your only goal is to make 2D games and that's all you care about Unreal might not be the best choice, but if you want to be a generalist and maybe also want to get a job in the industry you can't go wrong with Unreal.

Ok I'm definitely sold on Unreal Engine now. I've spent a couple years in Gamemaker, but I am going to take my projects into Unreal Engine. Change is scary and daunting, but it's become clear that Unreal can offer tools that other engines cannot handle as well. But I'm very much looking forward to taking your course and sharing my contributions to the world. Luckily I haven't gone too deep with my current project. All I would really need to do is import my sprites and continue where I left off. Thanks so very much for providing your teachings so solo devs can turn their dreams into reality. :)

been trying to make a 2d game i saw in my dreams awhile ago and unreal is a better choice for me to make what i saw. currently i'm still designing characters and things i want to add on paper, but something has been bugging me, i thought paper 2d and paper ZD are almost the same thing but it doesn't really seem so anymore. what's the difference between them?or are they tha same? do i need both making my game or just choosing one is enough?
@CobraCode
@CobraCode 3 ай бұрын
Hey, hope things will work out with your game! Paper 2D is the built in base system to enable sprites, flipbooks tile maps and so on, but it's lacking quality of life features such as an animation graph and animation notifies. PaperZD is built ON TOP OF paper 2D and just adds these nice features while still depending on the base classes of Paper 2D. You can make a game with Paper 2D only, but PaperZD will give you a better workflow.

There a lot different but depend on the user choice to game engine. Everyone is free to build their game. I guess Unity(bad choices) hurting the dev people and it not open src. But those dev have work hard from those work on plugins and assets to handle those 2D stuff well. People are creative to improve 2D which I didn't know there another 2D add on.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. But I need to plan things out to make sense as a whole and can't just throw random systems like that in there. I do have a JRPG course planned which will have a dialogue system though, but that's still pretty far in the future. The beat em up course will probably have a dash system and that one is the most likely to be completed this/next year.

If you have more than 1 team members, then yeah. I think it's rather cheap for solo devs though, isn't it? The Starter license is free if your business made less than ~$70.000 in the last fiscal year and the Professional license seems affordable enough at around $500 per year.

@@CobraCode I don't find that to be cheap at all, unless it is crazy better than the other options (I have no idea if it is...) but, Spine, Spriter, and even Animate CC are WAY cheaper than that, plus there is DragonBones which is free (it never gets updated which is VERY sad, but it is pretty good and again, free)

Question, why do you take the (no offence) lazy way of just using blueprints instead of adding c++ tutorials with unreal engine? the community is seriously lacking good c++ tutorials in the unreal engine context and you are worsening the problem by continuing that trend.
@CobraCode
@CobraCode 4 ай бұрын
Sorry, but I don't think C++ in UE is the end all be all you make it out to be. But it can be useful for optimization and accessing functions that aren't exposed to blueprints. There will be some C++ coverage in the future, but it's never gonna be my main focus. Reubs has great C++ tutorials and Rocky Mullet makes UE 2D games with C++, so their videos might be down your alley.
