Damn Rodney everything you said is so on point! I’m glad to hear someone say this stuff! It’s stuff I’ve grown to know and feel but you set it all in stone to let people like me know we’re going about it in the correct way. When you can hear the drum beats right away it’s magic almost feels like your doing it wrong and maybe not putting enough into hearing it but you made me realize I am doing it right!🤘🙏

I agree in 10000% with Your approach to the building bass lines and songs. Music comes from the mind and heart at the first place, then fingers and bass guitar kicks in. Also those tapping patterns are cool. Can't wait to figure smth out in similar vein :) P.S I always hated Mondays but now it's probably my favorite day of the week, because of MBM. Keep up the good work Rodney!

Aw man. Thank you so much for the muscle memory thing. The greatest lines come from our heads and hearts. I have been so stuck playing the same old stuff, yet I have such good ideas that never make it to the instrument, never mind making it to the recordings. Having a phone with recording can be priceless in the moments inspiration hits. Really glad I found your channel.

Hey Rodney! I love the content of your channel! I first discovered it a couple weeks ago when looking for info on the Schecter Riot basses, and it's quickly become my new favorite bass channel. I am taking your advice on how to improve the three finger plucking hand technique...and it is working! I really appreciate your pragmatic and logical approach to teaching/sharing. Keep it up!

I'm about your age RMcG, luckily I was a nerdy Beatles freak for a while, before hearing Maiden and Sabbath. I think listening to great song-writers has helped me learn how to make listenable basslines more than any time spent actually on my bass. Another great lesson! These videos are more help than the few times I tried actual bass lessons.

This made me think a bit. My whole life as a musician I have never had an interest in learning covers. I always have wanted to get the sounds out of my head. I am finally learning guitar out of frustration in explaining to someone else what I hear. I never had traditional tuition contributes to this. I also think that I have been extremely inefficient. For example, learning covers probably would have made it easier to identify and actualize my ideas. I appreciate the lesson and would love to know more about how you keep yourself from falling back on muscle memory and routine.
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 3 жыл бұрын
We definitely have much in common. I was more motivated to create as well. I learned guitar after quitting my last band. Learning covers really does help develop your ear and understanding of composition. As far as routine, etc, I have a creativity series coming in the new year that does a lot of that. In one of the more recent MBM episodes, I also talk about altered and random tuning to force yourself into a different frame of mind. Hope that helps a bit.

I am usually a guitarists, but last week I bought a bass guitar. I decided to learn finger style because I didn't want to get confused with the guitar. However when I record I notice a high pitched hum, which is very annoying. I have managed to work out how to remove it with EQ in Reaper, but I would rather it wasn't there. I have it going though a Pod Go and I use that as an interface.

@@RodneyMcG Maybe the Bass has. I know my electrical supply is fine as I don't have a problem with any of my guitars. It was a cheap Bass. I didn't want to get an expensive one at first, because I didn't know if I could play it. I have a lot more respect from Bass players now I have had a go though. Gonna keep practicing everyday until I can get semi decent.

Great video. I have these moments where stuff pops in to my head for Bass lines but I’m sometimes out or at work and by the time I’m home I’ve forgotten how it went. Any ideas on how to get these ideas out and remembered when not at home?
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I'll cover it in depth in an upcoming songwriting lesson. Since we all have phones, it's pretty easy. Just sing the line into your recorder. I have tons of audio files of myself singing pieces of bass lines, beatboxing drums, etc. It sounds dumb, but it works! Often, I will make verbal notes to help me remember underlying rhythm, etc. Something like "Feel of Testament - Over The Wall", then sing the line. It helps me remember the feel, timing, and have an attitude reference.

Huh... I was doing it all along. Probably it has more to do with me writing entire songs for all instruments. Only challenge ther is writing someting you can't quite play. But I guess that's how we improve as musicians.

for the first time i need to disagree with with. instrument and it's pulse of feeling make great deal in any player sound. nevermind if it's guitar, drums or even harmonica. SOUL of every instrument vibrates with player. i had few instruments and every one played on tone but... i played just from the begining things that was was glued on that. this is mind playing at some point. i know that guy from Cradle of Filth play death metal... but usualy PRS guitarists play blues in some sort of way. so do we still make music or we are hearing to to music from wood? XXI century but it's still nice topic to dig... :V

An instrument can give inspiration as well. It doesn't have to be all of one idea, or all of another. I have instruments that are inspiring, and i come up with fun ideas by playing them. However, I don't always have that instrument with me, and even then, often the idea i hear in my head is better than the one that I come up with by playing. Do all that you can and go with the best idea in the end. Thanks for contributing!
