Thank you sir! This is just the information I was looking for. Now to find your sharpening video for the inside bevel adze. You mentioned a dowel with sandpaper, and I understand that, but I am sure I could learn much from your dedicated sharpening video. Thank you again for providing this information, much appreciated. Thank you sir, I bought some East European hand forged spoon carving adzes, and they are all with the inside bevel. Using them my practical mind wanted the bevel on the outside. With your comprehensive and practical explanation, I can change the bevel knowing this is what I need to do. Thank you 👍

I have one of the austrian inside bevelled adzes. Some observations: The handle is far too thick. I find it tiring to grip. It is also quite crude in shape, just straight. The steel is very hard. Files skate off. The bevel is quite steep. It doesn't bite very well, and I find it difficult to cut a deep bowl. The weight is good. Not too heavy.

I am looking at making stools with a shallow bowl seat. Which would be best? Inside or outside bevel? I am edging towards an inside, because I will not be hogging out a deep hole.

Yes, if it is a shallow hollowing out then some of the inside bevel adzes could have an advantage.

Good explanation. Thanks! I almost chose one primarily because it's easier to sharpen an outside bevel but didn't consider the different cutting characteristics. So would you say that one should learn to use both?

In away yes, there are always trade off to different designs so being versed in both could be helpful. The outside bevel is probably the more versatile design to start with. I don't necessarily think that the inside bevel is harder to sharpen you just have to use different technique and tools. Simple sandpaper sheet with a wood dowel works great and is not hard to master. Just wrap the sheet around the dowels and watch your angles like any other sharpening. Thanks for the question!
