I tried the K&N on our 2023 GX and it just made the engine louder and the vehicle lost its luxurious quiet sound. Put the factory filter right back in.

Researching on K&N filter for my 2023 GX but these comments deter me from getting one. I did use K&N air filter years go. Also bought one for my 2019 Acura RDX. I think the key is not to over oil the element. Do maintenance on the MAF sensor by cleaning with MAF spray once a year to prevent any damage. The noise concerns me. I guess the increase in air flow create the hissing sound.

Awesome video, I never understood why anyone would want to use anything but OEM. If Toyota thinks K&N would better they would have used it over Denso. Keep it simple is my theory.

Quite true! And they have more and better engineers than KN...

I have watched a few of your videos. I enjoy the clarity of how you present a problem and give direction on how to proceed to those who tend to get sidetracked with unsubtanciated claims by non-OEM manufacturers. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos.

Great video. Denso, Japan made. 👏💯 If you want a little better throttle response with minimal noise increase, add a Toyota airflow accelerator and use a deadblow hammer to gently *tap* out the inner tube from the bottom half of the airbox. KEEP the OEM filter.

Excellent video and explanation/comparison of filter options -- thank you! Question: Where do you recommend ordering the Made in Japan filter! I ordered an OEM replacement filter from my local Lexus dealership. The filter is Denso but Made in USA instead of my original Made in Japan. The USA filter is only half the size of the Japan filter and it's missing the extra white fuzzy underside. Thanks!

The purpose of an air filter is as you said to filter air. The purpose of an aftermarket K&N (or similar) oiled element filter is to provide similar or better filtration to the OEM type with decreased restriction in airflow. Now, I'm not saying that a K&N type is going to drastically increase performance, that's foolish. What I am saying, is that it is well known that oiled element filter types are in fact superior to dry paper type filters in most circumstances. Oiled type filters catch a larger portion of fine dust particles and stop the ingress of moisture better than dry paper types. Why don't OEM's all use oiled type filters? Increased cost and lack of necessity contextually speaking. Vacuum (pertaining to naturally aspirated engines) and boost pressures (pertaining to forced induction engines) are a separate topic from air filtration and airflow restriction. Not to say they don't have consequential effects in relation to one another, just that they're separate considerations. All this to say I personally chose an oiled type air filter element, specifically K&N for my GX, for all the reasons listed above. That is not to say the Denso dry paper element is bad, just that the K&N oiled element is better. How much better would depend on your specific context.

K&N lets in more dirt, that is also a fact.

One question off topic- Mecca Dale Road east bound. There are zero videos or information online. Once you get to the Dale Road/Mecca Dale Road turn off and go about 15-18 miles east to the end of the road there are old rock structures. I found this on Google earth and wondering if you have taken this trail? It appears to be an old mining road. I have only been as far as the Brooklyn Mining District. I'm looking for info, for my next run.
