I decided to take a closer look at oil clay which came up very often during my Amazon Japan hauls. These feel a lot like polymer clay but they always stay soft. You can sculpt with them quite easily but won't be able to harden the final piece. Two brands here also float on water which was pretty cool!

These are not affiliate links as I don't have an account with Amazon Japan. As a very rough estimate of the price, I always take off the last two digits in yen to get the equivalent in dollars (eg 400yen = $4, although it's usually slightly less than that $3).

I grew up with playing with oil clay as a kiddo, in Mexico many mom and pop shops would sell this stuff for less than a US dollar, i still have the same set of clay that I had as a kid(altho they are a little muddy, color wise). I actually use this clay in a self portrait, I did a penci drawing of myself and used the clay as a pop of color in it and to add a 3d element. The thing is, this clay does attract alot of dust so it doesn't make good shelf decorations (rubbing alcohol does help a little for the dust problem, or maybe its the cheep no name brand that I grew up using). As a kid I used this clay to make furniture for my knock off polypocket dolls

Oil clays are actually somewhat popular in the doll making community. A lot of beginners will use it (because more time to work with it). And then they’ll cast the oil clay mould and make dolls using resin or other materials.

In Russia plasticine (or as we call it here plastilin) is way more common than any other types of clay. It’s used in kids arts and crafts all the time and I would very rarely see kids using other clays (like playdoh or air dry clay). In kindergarten and grades 1-4 it’s a very common material and it works wonders because you often don’t have to buy plastilin again and again, you can just scrap your previous projects. Of course the colors get muddy and if you want to keep the finished pieces they get kind of dusty and gross, but it’s a very cost effective material. I was very surprised to find out that not a lot of people know of this material.

surprised this stuff isn't very polular on social media, it could be used very well for mold making

I've only seen these clays used in silicone mould making, so it cool to see that there are other (fun) uses

I grew up using this kind of clay for my school projects (I live in Mexico) and something I used to do to preserve sculptures I wanted to keep!! It works moderately well as long as you don´t press on it!

Play doh is most likely more expensive because part of the price is for the branding. A bit like how hotels charge more for their rooms with sea views. You’re paying more money for the view with very little, if any, change in service/quality 😅

I made a little Christmas reindeer out of oil clay when I was in middle school in around 2009. My mom absolutely adored the little guy and still has him to this day. Over the years the clay slightly melted and made him slouch, the colors faded a bit and he's gotten dusty, but after a couple years the clay actually got pretty hard and he's held up well!

You should experiment ways to coat them with stuff like clear nail polish to see if it turns them hard!

This clay type reminds me of the modeling clay we'd use in elementary school. Unlike Play Dough, it never seemed to dry out or lose it's texture, and it did feel really weird. They still sell it at school supplies where I live. They came in these packs of four to five colors, all in one big rectangle shape. We used it to make model volcanoes and one time to make molecules using toothpicks!

there are some very high end oil clays and some veeeery low end ones. I’ve used a very broad range of qualities of them through my childhood. the worst and cheapest dollar store ones are extremely hard and crumbly no matter how much you try to work them. high end ones like monster clay are heated in the microwave to melt them, then sculpted with as it cools. they’re used for professional SFX sculpting and character design!

Where I’m from kids use plasticine in pre school and early stages of primary school in free time using it to explore their creative side, it’s just to keep them occupied and they love it

Hmmm in the u.s we call it modeling clay, it comes in a lot of different colors and it's sold in dollar stores or supermarkets and craft stores for around $1. I remember my sister made a little dish for my mom for mother's day thinking it was polymer clay so she baked it and it melted 😭😅

When I was younger, my dad and I made a face sculpture using this clay! I still have it somewhere too, I believe. Very interesting material
