1:23 I keep telling people they gotta use this angle for every shot. I want to see the arrow flight, not just the impact and a close up of a face! For people who aren’t that familiar with the sport to see how much the arrow arcs is a gamechanger. This is by far the best angle for spectating, I can’t put into words how jarring it is to be watching the target zoomed in and then suddenly an arrow appears and you’ve robbed the audience of the flight of the arrow (the most beautiful part visually).

Right!!!!!!!!!!! This seems such common sense yet no one does it! I watched the sport for the longest time without ever realizing how far they are, how small the target is and how they have to shoot in an arc.

at 1:24, why is that not the angle they give us all the time! I can't stand how NBC covers live archery. Close up of face, cut close up of target. What idiots, producers, directors, think this is a good way to show the sport? Show the entire flight path of the arrow... duh!

Absolutely on the money comment. When watching, I wouldn't have known if the target was 10 feet from the archers, which absolutely took away from how impressive their skills are. At least 1/3 of the shots should give a sense of the distance involved.

I'm gonna say it too, cause i feel it's totally the point of the sport when you watch it. You should see the shooter and the target, THEN give us the close up of the target. The first time i saw the distance of the target after minutes and minutes of nothing close of showing it I was blown away. You don't even see the middle circle from that distance.

The arrow flying in the air is the least interesting part of the sport. People who know archery, also happens to be the same group of people who do archery, knows that the form of the shooter is the real important thing, and that is the thing to see. In outdoor events, shooters also need to combat the wind that is blowing at them, hence all the struggle and stuff. That is only visible by pointing the camera at them. Y'all don't seem to know that. Arrows in the air don't morph into dragons, and how it flies isn't marked or judged in any way.
@thedon008
@thedon008 7 жыл бұрын
Nanorisk I shoot recurve. I know form is important, but the actual process from shooting form to the flight of the arrow and then score is what I feel should be shown more. It's not like you can't at least do 50-50 of the shots both ways. I don't need to see their face every single time. Plus, form isn't only what you see from a perpendicular view of their body. It's good to see it from the back too.

The gear you see looks fancy but only helps stabilize the bow a little while aiming and help keep it twisting on release. The skills involved are just like shooting a regular recurve or longbow. People who complete without sights actually use sighting tricks, like counting the wrappings on their strings and looking at spots on the woodgrain of their bows, and are in fact sighting, they just don't have a physical sight. These archers are also only using a front sight and aren't allowed a rear sight or a level. Try shooting a gun without a rear sight. So it depends on them learning to hold their bow absolutely consistently and level every time or the front sight does them no good. This is not like unlimited compounds where a peep sight in the bowstring is allowed. I don't know why people expect archery to be primitive but don't expect Olympic firearms to be black powder muskets without sights. These are the most ignorant comments I've ever seen on a video. People watch track and field and accept pole vaulters using poles that catapult them over the bar, they don't demand wooden poles or barefoot runners on dirt tracks. All this equipment does is ensure that it is the SKILLS that separate the archers from one another. Wooden bows and especially wooden arrows (far more important than the bows) give random results so they leave a great deal up to chance where the arrow goes. This video also does not give a good impression of how really far away the target is. When they show a full shot note how long it actually takes for the arrow to get to the target. The handles of the bows look really fancy and sexy, but the middle part of the bow is just supposed to be as stiff as possible, it could just as well be a plain bar. All the high-tech look is just marketing and doesn't do anything. The best bows, by Hoyt, in fact, use bamboo cores on their top bow limbs with a carbon fiber overlay. Their basic shape hasn't changed in decades. Those stabilizers help steady the bow but also make it heavier making the sport more athletic. The stronger and fitter you are the better your chances in the sport. Today's archers are pulling stronger bows than 20 years ago and getting better results, it's because of fitness, not gear. All the improvements in archery gear have made further physical demands on the shooters so it is a more athletic contest than it used to be, not less.

"Today's archers are pulling stronger bows than 20 years ago and getting better results, it's because of fitness, not gear." Really? They are NOT using heavy bow weights. Most of them looked like they were only 20 to 30 meters and judging by the arch, they had to be using less than 30 lb draw weight. I've been shooting longbow for over 50 years and I can tell. Average bow weight in Olympic archery is 48 for the men and 33 for the women. That's not that much weight.
@davidmdyer838
@davidmdyer838 2 жыл бұрын
@@fiddlefaddle1 An average of 48 means many men are shooting over 50#. That's a lot more than in the past. Olympic archers shoot hundreds of arrows a day, that adds up to a lot. There's no way the women are shooting 33# and getting decent scores are 70 meters, it just isn't possible.

If you want to make your country’s Olympic Team, get a recurve setup and learn to shoot it. There should be a team selection process involving plenty of shooting. If you beat everyone to finish top 3, you make the team. While it sounds easy, Olympic archery requires as much mental strength as physical (archers lift more cumulative weight than powerlifters during a typical Olympic competition). Best wishes.

I have this beautiful field behind my house that I shoot. I've been enjoying archery for over 50 years, both longbow and compound. Every archer knows how I feel when they are outside and become one with the arrow. I use this time to meditate and be at peace. I know that some people will never understand how you can find peace with a weapon that can kill but, it is the most wonder time in my day to try to shoot the perfect bulls eye.Thinking about how the bow has changed in composition but, not the basic way that it works. Sorry for the rambling but, I just wanted to say something. Good shooting to all fellow archers.

They’re not compounds. So they’re floating them in at low speeds, heavy arrows, to keep the radical fight down, like shooting pellet gun competitions (low speed + heavy pellet = accuracy) so they’re just lobbing them in. That’s why they might bounce off the target.

It's not as hard as it looks in regards to those factors. They are using "sights" and at most of these events I think they have wind barriers up and stuff to ensure fairness. The hard part is just holding the bow steady at the point of release. That and having good eye sight.

The olympic bows are really hard to shoot. Just a recurve, No peep in the string, No optics, just a pin sight. You shoot with a finger tab, no release device. And (here is the hard part) they are shooting at 70 meters (about 231 feet) or 77 yards. I have shot compound, Olympic, and Crossbow, none of it is easy. Remember, the other guy has equipment just as good as yours. In the days when it was shot with long bows and no sights, they did not always even hit the target at all. Sometimes a person with a lower score could win as it was scored Hits, and then score. So if you had 36 hits, but only scored 200 out of a possible 360 and some one else scored 35 hits with a score of 350 (all tens) The guy with the lower score won! I think that little kink has been solved in the rules now, but I do not know.

Any of you who think Olympic Style Recurve takes no skill because of the sight and stabilizers, go to your local archery club and take a lesson. It's called a 'clicker' - one of the variables which can affect your consistency is the draw length. Even a variation of 1-2mm can increase/reduce the amount of energy transmitted to the arrow and thus cause it to go high or low. The clicker snaps down as soon as the point of the arrow passes the exact same spot every time during the draw and is the signal to the archer that the precise draw point has been reached.

because they are not holding it, that way they are reducing the risk of moving the bow when they release. To catch the bow, they tie a sling to their fingers around the bow handle.

His entire emphasis is on speed and he claims this was the essence of historical archery. This is not true. Traditional archers shot at very long distances with very powerful bows pulling quite far back, and shot in coordinated groups to land in a general area of a battlefield. These groups were called clouts, it's where we get the expression "having a lot of clout".Thus, archers were used at the beginning of a battle and were the original artillery to soften up the enemy beforehand to hand fighting. They certainly did use quivers, contrary to his claim, it's an ancient word. He claims, on the basis of a few paintings, that archers normally held the arrow on the right side of the bow. This is not born out ty the general record, and he has to hold the arrow with his thumb to keep the arrow on the bow, something his own evidence does not show. Old bows have arrow shelves on the other side. Asian traditional archers released from their thumbs which is why they put their arrows on the other side, not what tradtional European archers did. It is not possible to draw a strong bow with his grip, certainly not one that would should a heavy armor-piercing war arrow 250 plus yards. To watch a real hunter pulling a strong bow shooting fast instinctively look at videos of Howard Hill, Hollywood's best all-time archer. Anderson is only good at accuracy with speed at extremely short distances. His claim that traditional archers never shot at targets is also false. A traditional round target holder was known as a butt and archers that practiced together (a requirement in Medieval England) were known as buttees. That word became buddies. That this word has such an ancient link in archery target shooting refutes his claim.

It is natural. Without the sling they have, the bow would fall. They don't hold the bow at all, you have mon control if only the tension of your arm holds it in place.

Gripping the bow inevitably causes torque on release. So they are actually only pushing the bow forward while they are aiming, not grasping it. So there is no support for the bow after the arrow is released and the bow falls into the sling. This takes a lot of practice.

No bubble level or rear sight allowed. No optics in the sights, just a pin or a circle. They are shooting 50# bows or stronger which use to be considered for hunters. That takes A LOT of strength and those stabilizers require a lot more strength to hold the bow up. Walmart arrows could not be shot accurately because they have different weights and stiffness. Non-uniform arrows cannot be shot accurately and have nothing to do with skill. However, if you gave one of these archers good arrows with cheep bows without sights and a week to practice they would do very well, as long as the bow was strong enough to reach the distances. They are using only ONE sighting tool, the front pin, for the rear sighting they must go by feel and experience. How well would you shoot a gun with no rear sight at all, just a front mark? And that's discounting scopes of course. I do have an idea, I shot Olympc archery for years, competed in national championships. The biggest change was getting good arrows while I still had a cheap fiberglass bow and I was winning tournaments. Those stabilizers don't help them aim, they just reduce torque on release. For all but the very top archers they wouldn't make any difference in your accuracy. Just like really expensive golf clubs won't improve an average golfer's game at all.

@archeryislife9586
@archeryislife9586 7 жыл бұрын
of course the accessories hep with the accuracy, but that is also why they are shooting from further away. No instinctive archer in the world can shoot like they are shooting. Shots like you see in this video need perfect form, a perfect wind compensation and a perfect concentration. If you are not amazed by this, I suggest you try shooting a modern bow, even a compound, and then you will realize how difficult this is. Don't get me wrong though, instinctive archery is amazing too, and I would love to see the best shots from an instinctive competition, you just can't say one is more impressive than the other, since they do not have the same standards. It's like comparing formula 1 races with rally races.
@FlippyMoon
@FlippyMoon 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. I shoot instinctively more than i do with a sight. Barebow or occasionally longbow. What Chad fails to realise is that the poundage of these bows are really high. If a beginner tried to draw an arrow with one they would either not be able to or wobble like crazy at full draw. The gadgets just help, it doesn't really improve their skill. Just little things to make life a little easier
@ThoseWhoHeedTheCall
@ThoseWhoHeedTheCall 7 жыл бұрын
Flippywoo Woo Hi mate, no offence bud, but the poundage of modern bows is actually a lot lighter than what someone would be using when going traditional. To get the same fps arrow speed that these modern bows produce, one needs to be using #70+ in a traditional recurve bow. I help run a traditional archers club in the U.K, #60 is the lowest draw weight we use, highest is #95 (he uses a tradional turkish recurve horsebow). We shoot 350+ arrows each in a session. Simply comes down to physical conditioning, training regime and how hard one wants to push their body.
@archeryislife9586
@archeryislife9586 7 жыл бұрын
Thunder Foot Hey just a question, you said you guys shoot 350+ arrows in a session, witch is impressible btw, but how many sessions do you have per week? And do you use your back muscles or your arms to pull back? I'm asking this simply because I don't know much about traditional archery (I shoot modern recurve)
@ThoseWhoHeedTheCall
@ThoseWhoHeedTheCall 7 жыл бұрын
archery is life Hi mate, Archery Is Life! love the name :-). Winter time, once or twice a week (we shoot outdoors only, wind, rain, snows all fair game). Spring and summer its 4 maybe 5 times because theres small competitions to prepare for. All back and shoulder blades, we learnt from mistakes with obvious shoulder issues in the early days xD (learn the hard way eh?). - We once did a Tenthousand arrow shoot (ten members shoot 1000 arrows each, in one day). It was a charity fund raiser. Took everyone nearly enough 10hrs to complete. - when shooting traditional, i think its just down to simplicity of gear - or lack of it to be precise. Theres little to no time wasted knocking, theres no plungers, sights, slings or releases etc to fiddle with. Arrow rests on your hand and not on a shelf. From the arrow starting off in the quiver you can knock and shoot an arrow (full draw) in 3 seconds comfortably from back quiver and 4 from hip, if your shooting thumb release these times are considerably less - 5-6 seconds if you want to take plenty of time to aim. - KZfaq Lajos Kassai, hes another level all together. - Archery is truly Life!! Peace :-)
