Can core range bottles be a good investment?! The answer is yes, if you are careful. This Lord of the Isles bottle is proof that even core range bottles can be a great whisky investment if you pick bottles with the right credentials.
Ardbeg Lord of the Isles was first bottled in 2001 after being aged for at least 25 years. As such, it is believed that the whiskies used in the expression were distilled in 1976 and 1977. The release represented an old vintage and high age statement Ardbeg release that has become a favourite amongst Ardbeg fans and whisky collectors.

BUY THIS BOTTLE: shop.marklittler.com/product/ardbeg-lord-of-the-isles/ - sure it's slightly over auction prices - but it's the lowest UK retail price by a long way AND we offer wordwide shipping.

Love it Mark!! Like I said, I am from Louisville, KY USA, (bourbon capital of the world) and I have a nice collection of Bourbon. I have recently discovered that very high end, nice scotch sits on the shelves here. In the past week I have purchased a bottle of 2014 Macallan Rare Cask for $200 with a perfect condition box, from someone in my bourbon group. I also purchased Lagavulin 12 year 2021 Special Release and Lagavulin 11 Year Offerman edition Guinness Cask Finish (2021 Whisky Advocate #1 most exciting whisky) from my local grocery store for $130 and $85. I love your content and keep up the good work!!

Hey Scott, I am in AZ and was thinking the same. buying older bottles, but where do you go if you want to sell them. Thats the hard part.

I adore Lord of the Isles. I fell in love with it during sampling at an Ardbeg function in Singapore. I bought a few bottles, but, as you say it became discontinued and I drank them all. So annoyed at myself now. I just saw on Whisky Exchange it being offered for over $4000.00 AUD. Still might work my way to getting a bottle. Shhh, don't let the minister of the treasury and warfare know. The only core range bottle I have in my collection which remains in mint condition, unopened, with Parafilm seal is an old blue bottle in blue canister of 30yo Glenfiddich.

I agree with you completely. Although definitely not as old as the Lord of the Isles bottling you referenced here, and also not a Scotch, the Hibiki core range has seen this happen through their aged releases being discontinued. You used to be able to buy the 12 year old for under £40 in Tesco, now look at their prices. The same goes for their 17 and 21 year olds. It's also evident in many of the Macallan core range bottles of yesteryear. To say a bottle is not a good investment whisky, simply because it's a core range bottling, is absolutely untrue.

Hey - good to hear from you again. 100% on Hibiki too - the prices have gone wild havn't they. I wonder what Tesco bottle will be the next one we wished we had bought more of. One of my regrets is not buying more Lagavulin 16 when it was only £30-40RRP - it's one of my all time favourite drams and now the price is just jumping like mad at RRP. And I agree totally with your sentiment too! It's all about identifying value rather than just following the market.

@@MarkLittler Agree with you on the Lagavulin! I woke up one day and the prices had almost doubled overnight! Same happened with Glenfarclas 25 just to add another to the list. Costco were selling them for £99 not so long ago, and I thought they'd be around for a while at that price. How wrong was I?! I should've stocked up. Now they're £215 RRP at least. Another great drinker core range whisky that's shot up in value exponentially! 😩

Looking forward to hear your thoughts on the Glenallachie 21 and 30y batch series. I guess these will be "core ranges" as well. Love your stuff, keep up the good work Sir.

Interesting video. My “collection” is pretty much all core range, the best performing one appears to be Macallan Directors Edition for reasons I cant fathom, now appears to sell around £400 at auction possibly todays Bells decanter?!!
@MarkLittler
@MarkLittler Жыл бұрын
Haha - I think it will always be better than a Bells Decanter :) And you say "collection" but they all start somewhere - wait 5 years and I bet you end up with a whisky room to hold all your bottles 😂

The Glendronach 15 and 18 a few years ago had older whiskey than the age statement on the bottle.

Hey Mark, lovely video as always. Few thoughts around the value and investment we make. Taking into account inflation (especially recent rising of it in each country %) It's interesting to notice, that these bottle $$$ Especially the 40-yo Glenfarclas will 100% increase in value. Question is from my side to you, will it outpace the normal inflation values to the bottle itself? Currently you can find it easily 900-1.2k range. 10 years down the line it might go up to 10k. Depending on each year how we are currently going, I would guess (note on the guess part fellas :D ) The actual value - inflation for this investment would be around 300 after 10 years. Would be interesting to know if you have some math behind this also. To end, as I said, not rebuking or stating it's not a great choice, Im far off in this field than 99% of you, just curious and recently getting into whiskey tasting and investing. So your opinion and insights are very interesting to hear. Thank you

Hey - well, my wife is a finacial advisor. The markets will always be the safest place to invest from a regulatory point of view. And if people took the risks with stocks that they take with bottles people would be very wealthy. However, bottles are a great hedge and also a lot of fun. I'd never advise anyone to put more than they can afford to loose into whisky inevstments - but as you well know - historically they have been great! What bottles do you have in your collection?

By keeping btls for so many years, liquid level would drop thru angels share. Especially for collectors in the tropics. Surely that will affect the value in future?
@MarkLittler
@MarkLittler Жыл бұрын
Technically they shouldn't suffer from the angels share if they are stored correctly. That is much easier said than done in the topics though!
