I would absolutely love to see a video about living outside of these major art hubs and creating a successful art career or even one on small art towns that are art friendly. I am fortunate in that even though I am in a relatively small town (Van Buren, Arkansas - population around 20K), I am within walking distance of an art center that offers free workshops and inexpensive classes as well as being a member of the artist coalition in which I have the opportunity to have my artwork in shows. Members also have the potential to have an exhibit of their own after building a sufficient collection. There is a small art museum in neighboring Fort Smith (15 minutes away) and I have noticed Arkansas has a great love for murals as there are new ones added every year in Fort Smith. It's very easy to meet and make artist friends here and we would love our small art community to expand.

I am Belgian and live in Spain since almost 8 years. I first lived in Barcelona and now in Madrid. I should say when it comes to art galleries, contacts and buyers Madrid is the place. In Barcelona in order to expose or do your way you must be known outside Catalunya. Barcelona was the center of international art and avant-garde in Spain this is not he case anymore Madrid is now on the forefront: still affordable cost of living for a big capital, a huge connection with Latin America and the airport who connect the city to major art cities like New York or London. This is also a huge art city with a lot or worldwide and recognize writers, painters, actors and directors living there. The city hosts also Reina Sofia and Prado Museums and the place is dynamic and open minded when it comes to creativity. The only downside is the language English is not widely spoken here but if you want to live in big international city who is still affordable, well connected to major art cities and doted with art galleries, cultural centers and people able to buy art than choose Madrid. But that´s only my point of you of course
@contemporaryartissue
@contemporaryartissue 7 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right. In our list, it is clear that Madrid outscored Barcelona here. Madrid is a very underestimated art city in general in my opinion. For instance, their institutions are stunning but do not have the same allure in the art world as their other European colleagues. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences here; very valuable information!

Thank you for compiling this info. I lived in NY and visited several of the European cities mentioned. Learning more about living outside of these places and functioning well as an artist would be interesting. The bigger cities might push one to keep high standards… for lack of a better term. I reside in Mexico… where there is definitely an appreciation for all types of art. And Mx City has some very renowned collections I hear. I also noticed having lived in places like Colorado, Vermont and Chicago… these areas of the US attract those with an art appreciation and buying power.

I really would be interested in emerging art cities, those who aren’t common yet but are in a status of being highly potential for artists to move before the trend is set. All of the art cities mentioned in the video are crowded of artists and also because of the high niveau of culture there, they are now pretty unaffordable for artists that usually have not much money left to spend on their living conditions. I personally can speak about Berlin, which is mentioned as affordable for artists to live. Yes, but just in comparison to the others, which are light years distanced to be affordable. I can tell you Berlin is also not affordable compared to the artists‘ wallet, because it is now already gentrified and either are the prices for the rents are high or you can not find a room to live because everyone wants to live in Berlin. An artist friend of mine searched for a room ( yes, only a room and not an apartment) to rent 2 and a half years before she finally got one. Afterwards you have to look for a studio to rent, which is even more impossible to get and very rare. Also my former professor of art who lives in Berlin said that it is not clever anymore to move there, in general not clever to move in any of the well known art cities. The answer of where to move as an artist is beyond the history of the big art cities, e.g. of Berlin: After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the German Democratic Republic there was a lot of cheap housing and studios in Berlin, so the German artists all moved there because it was cheap to live there. out of this a big art scene was created that still exists today i.e. it is much more worthwhile to go where the rents are cheap because a lot of artists will also go there and then a new art scene can develop there in a new potential art city. In Germany it has been Leipzig recently but a lot of Berlin artists escaped from Berlin‘s Gentrification and were moving to Leipzig so the city is now already on a point of being cultural interesting for wealthy people and the city is now also affected ( or better: infected) by gentrification, so the same happens to Leipzig as it happened to Berlin. What we can learn is the trick to be there before it starts. So @CAI it would be nice if you can share your knowledge of trend analysis of where it seems to emerge a new center city of art which is still affordable for artists or how you can make it as an artist living in smaller or more unknown cities.

I would also love to hear about artists thriving outside the major art capitals. It does exist in other creative fields; music composers, writers, who choose to live in smaller cities or in the countryside. I understand how living in larger cities can increase exposure and serendipity. But truth is, the bulk of your activity as an artist is to spend time alone in a studio. It could be everywhere. Why not in a more sustainable place, or a place that matters to you. Saving a couple of days a month to visit your contacts and keep a foot in the larger art hubs. There's this unconscious bias that artists outside of big cities are lesser. I suspect it to be a reliquat of the modern, early-contemporary era, where the only way to be visible was to move in to the big city where it's at.

I think Mexico City is also a good option for artits, it has the biggest artfair in Latin America (Zona Maco), and a lot happening in the Art week (Each February). It has a good amount of international art galleries, and several more galleries, it is an affordable city, one minus point would be the language barrier, is mainly spanish, but out of my experience those big galleries does have english speaking personeel.

Hi. I think that while a healthy domestic community collectors is the foundation for a healthy market, international perceptions of a city are also key to attracting collectors from elsewhere - and it’s that dimension that really cements the profile and growth of a city as an ‘art city’. I guess the presence of art fairs are also critical.
@contemporaryartissue
@contemporaryartissue 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely spot on. The international allure of an art city is a very important "pull" factor for both artists and collectors. Fairs are also really important indeed. The entire art world comes with an international art fair. Thank you, as always, for your contribution here!

It would seem that a healthy propoertion of artist working today are not in the art cities and yet, they are productive with gallery representation in those cities. I also realize that a gallery is in business which means finding and. maintaining an edge in the market. The edge of course is perpetually interesting work and the artist making thw work. From my experience and following various presenters who are gallerists or someone like yourself, There are more artists working than a market can support, and with more workl available, there is more parsing and choosing the most dynamic and salable work. So, yes, a conversation on approaching the city from outrside it would be an interesting discussion, given your normally distilled and incisive viewpoint. Thank you for posting what you do.

It's not necessarily where you live as much as it is about the wirk you create and if you get your art seen outside of your city - even if you're in a large/art city. There are 1000s of artists who live in large/art cities whose work often goes unnoticed by major galleries, museums and collectors because the artist isn't recognized in other cities, states or countries. There's an annoying unwritten rule in the visual arts world that most local artists aren't taken seriously ir in demand until their work is shown and/or collected in other larfe/art cities. So, its not necessarily about where you live in order to be successful and recognized. Collectors, galleries and agents will find you no matter where you live if your work is "hot". Wow! He totally left out San Francisco, Chicago, Miami and Houston... Unless he includes them in the list he mentioned. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I am disappointed with no Canadian city in the top 30. I create in Montreal. It is not a city without Art, there are many gallery and "creative geniuses" and it is well located between Toronto (an interesting city for art, in Canada) and New York (first city in the top 5).

There is indeed some good activity in Toronto and Montreal, however both have just 2 top 1,000 art galleries so it is simply not enough to call them art cities. However, they can be a great place to be based and to target other areas of the art world as well. Have a great day!

Given the copious quantities of funny money printing which has occurred in western cities during the last 15 years, I think you should do a video titled: 'Art cities with less inflation'

Paris having 2M inhabitants is somewhat misleading as this number excludes all the cities around Paris where a lot of creation happen... Thus creating this gap with the other cities in the top 5.

@lancelot, I have a firmer student who made it as a major artist, featured in Art in American and other art journals. His gallery in NYC regularly shows at major art fairs. His hubs, NYC, Berlin, a hot spot for contemporary art and London. He lived in the Hudson valley and commutes in to NYC.

You're absolutely right-however, the ranking is not that occupied with the total population, more with the population of galleries. On the other hand, Paris does have the best ratio of number of galleries per capita, which could also have been a useful metric for this video. Thank you for tuning in!

you cannot put Paris before Milan, Italy. like for real! what is happening today about art in Paris? nothing! Italy has the Venice Biennale and many important art galleries in Milan, plus the art scene is very contemporary, and big names show their work in Milan like Cattelan and Pistoletto. Milan is definitely way better than Paris. maybe not as good as London but definitely better than Paris or Brazil

I am afraid I will have the disagree on this one-as do the statistics. Paris has 9 top-100 art galleries, Milan has just two. Cattelan and Pistoletto are also shown in Paris, Cattelan with Perrotin, and Pistoletto with Galleria Continua. Almost every single artist of the top 1% is being shown in Paris, so I am afraid the ranking here is correct. When it comes to the Venice Biennale, well, this is in Venice and not Milan. Paris also has Art Basel Paris, Art Paris, Paris Photo, and more renowned contemporary art institutions such as the Fondation LV, Pinault Collection, Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Art Moderne, Palais Tokyo, and many more. Nevertheless, thank you for tuning in!
