With watercolor in particular curiosity and the ability to let go and DISCOVER things you’ve never seen or never thought of trying which is why DISCOVERY is such a great concept! I find it’s the most minuscule things that are put together is what gives you something new🥰🥇🙏🏻❤️‍🔥

Sir, I just wanted to say a huge thank you. When I found your channel and started working with your tutorials, my skills in watercolor boomed in quality a lot past month. In addition, you inspired me to actually love and explore colors, understand their theory! If I had met myself several years ago, she wouldn't have believed me that I finally dropped this confused barrier made of fears of touching colors. Besides, she would have spilled her tea if I had told her that now I eager to draw landscapes rather than human bodies. I really appreciate you as a tutor and as a person, you brought something wonderful in my life and I hope, that everyone feels the same way here, on this cozy channel. Thank you so much for everything, Sir.

You wrote exactly what I was thinking. I watched a few other watercolour painting channels before I found this channel and I feel free now to experiment with watercolour. I was told that watercolour was really hard to learn but that didn't stop me. I just messed about with it until I came here and now it's become a kind of therapy. I have a lot to learn still but that's the fun part. I seem to end up painting random tree paintings more often that not but what's not to love about trees.

I am constantly trying techniques I learn here as well as from books so thank you for this video on Discovery. I’ve been calling it Exploration which is probably what takes place before the discovery! It’s also a great way to find out what feels right - I’ve tried techniques that just don’t work for me at all - others that have been aligned with my vision. This video was especially encouraging, keeping me on the path I’m on. Thank you.

I think you're the first artist who has ever articulated what has been motivating me for the whole time I've been doing art (since 2011). I wouldn't have used the term "discovery," but that's exactly it -- what gets me out of bed every morning. Thank you!

Thanks for the reminder of what's really important about being creative. When you turned your sketchbook over and continued the painting "upside down" I was like...😯. Such a simple thing to do to change your headspace about a piece.

Thank you so much for your interesting talk and guidance. I only returned to painting during lockdown, after a 40 year break (work and kids then grandkids) and decided to try watercolour pencils - I too love my Albrecht Durer pencils. It’s been a difficult journey and I confused myself by watching lots of KZfaq videos, then I lost momentum and my paintings no longer had the spontaneity that the pencils gave me at the beginning, I was no longer excited about what I was doing. Your pep talk has made me think and I am determined to find my mojo again. Thank you 😊 By the way, I love your videos but have no intention of trying to imitate what you do, you are awesome and they are a wonderful example of what can be achieved after years of self discovery - I have a long way to go.

These are so beautiful, Steve. Been binge-watching your spontaneous paintings and want to try one so bad but scared. I'm new to watercolour and tear myself to bits if something goes wrong. It's so counter-productive. One of these days I'll get the courage to try it. Thank you for opening me up to a totally new style. It's stunning!

That was very timely for me Steve; it shook me out of a demotivation period. My “I don’t know what to paint” thing. Discovery is the answer and not thinking whether I’ll mess it up or not. I don’t lack skills, but I probably lack imagination. Let’s hope the watercolour itself shows me what to create spontaneously. Thanks very much.

This is fascinating--it's like magic the way you bring your talent and experience to bear on a lot of abstract colours and turn them into a forest. It's interesting when you talk about realism and abstract painting. When I did my degree, I had a great tutor for life drawing and she explained to us how it was important to know the 'rules' so you can make a conscious chose to ignore them to get the effect you're after. I love watching your paintings come to life. 😊

I don’t get how it does. I learned figure drawing and all it did was give awareness that my art isn’t sophisticated enough and it’s not good and realistic enough for me to do anything with it and I stopped drawing a lot more and every time I want to draw figures, if it doesn’t look good, I hate the piece. What’s it supposed to make you do? Like sure, all art is abstract, abstract art helps you see shapes-but what is the point? I learned all this crap and my art is still ugly, I tried forcing myself to learn different styles that old masters and people I like off the internet and I lose interest and have to fight with myself. What am I supposed to do? I love drawing but I don’t feel like if I don’t do the requirements then my art isn’t good enough and I’m my eyes, I like my art but it’s not good enough.

@allanfink6138
@allanfink6138 2 жыл бұрын
This musing about discovery makes me mindful of reading Leonardo's notebooks, and the things he wrestled with while doing artwork. He lived at a time before MOST of what your contemporary art school teachers told you was invented. The "color wheel" had not been invented so he wrote about the primary colors being something like, blue for sky, yellow for fire, brown for earth, (I am paraphrasing, not sure what the actual quote was, but it was NOT red+green+blue OR red-yellow-blue that we go by now. Additive and subtractive color models had yet to be invented, or discovered.) He was exploring shadows and shading using a candle, a ball and a wooden box, and he says something like, I don't know if light starts at the candle and goes to your eye, or if it starts at your eye and goes to the candle, but I DO know that it travels in a straight line. Now we just take ALL that for granted. And Imagine the discoveries along the way when you grind your own pigment from ROCKS, and people have not yet decided the best kind of oil to mix with it. One of my hobbies is wood turning with a wood lathe, and I came across an OLD instruction book on how to make things on a lathe. The first SEVERAL chapters are about SAND CASTING the LATHE PARTS using melted steel. There were NO COMPANIES back then that made and sold lathes. If you wanted a lathe, you had to MAKE IT YOURSELF. I imagine several revisions were inspired by broken noses, and missing fingers.

Going to get that paint brush! You were my first watercolor teacher four years ago. I watched your videos daily and got good quality paint, brushes and paper from the start. I was trained in the old masters style of oil painting, so it was an incredible challenge for me to switch to watercolor. You have been my inspiration all these years and I am addicted to learning new things. Have you ever tried watercolor pencil on velum? I do portraits and mount them on colored backgrounds. Because of the skills I learned from you, I've gone on to win best of show with some of my art and now occasionally do commissions. Thank you for continuing to encourage us to experiment!

You are so right! Started watercolor watching Frank Clark “have some more fun” and I painted that “style” for years. I wanted so desperately to paint from within Myself, and then, I lost my mojo for 5-6 years. The new watercolorists styles like your beautiful work here, so inspired me, I had to start painting again. Amazingly, I get a lot of compliments, and requests for paintings now. Thank you thank you! I have a couple of ideas for videos. (1) What is your process for analyzing why a painting didn't work out and/or how to redo it "correctly" and (2) What is your process for distilling a photo or Plein air (sp?) scene into its essential components. Maybe when you first started out. It's probably instinctive for you now.
