Chopping fire wood is hard and slow work so why not to triple your output with this amazing four bladed QUAD AXE 5 000 000?!?!!

After filming this video I have actually kept using this monstrosity :D It's really faster on my type of work, not three times faster than regular axe but maybe twice as fast? Only drawback is the fact that it's four times heavier than regular axe so you get tired quite fast swinging this around. And by the way I have couple more videos already filmed and lot of great ideas so more videos coming again after some time off!

If the blades would be thinner, you have reduced weight and less resistance in the wood.

A grip would help a lot honestly. It seems to be sliding in your grip with such a large arcing swing, and is twisting the head ever so slightly. This means each blade isn't hitting equally or directly but at a slight angle.

When you have so much surface hitting the wood at the same time, it would spread out the impact. I wonder if a physics teacher or engineer would be able to give suggestions on how to improve it's practicality?

The biggest improvement I have seen for cutting lots of firewood is putting the wood inside a large tyre. With it inside there when you split it the wood doesn't go flying in every direction so you can just load up the tyre with lots of logs and just keep swinging until it's all cut the way you want it.

You can improve the split rate by grinding the blades back so that you have a point where the four blades meet and the new sharpened edges angle up at about 30 degrees. Just be sure to re-harden the edges if they get hot during grinding.
@romaliop
@romaliop Жыл бұрын
The mid-section is also probably much too bulky. The "wings" will wedge the pieces apart anyway, so all the midsection really needs to do is cut the wood and therefore the blade could be a lot thinner there. This would help with both the weight and the resistance/friction that stops the swing before the wood splits.

@RossMitchellsProfile

I'd argue far more then twice as fast, you go from spending the vast majority of your time picking the pieces of wood back up for more swings instead of actually swinging, with a big tyre it's just load it up and keep swinging until the wood is split to your liking.

his technique is also needing quite a bit of work. the way he's swinging I'm honestly surprised he didn't pull a muscle. the way he swings is much more appropriate for something like a throwing axe. keep your non-dominant hand at the base of the handle and use your dominant hand to lift the head of the maul/axe. when starting the downswing you slide your dominant hand to the base of the axe to meet with your non-dominant hand.

When it's deeply stuck, lift it with firewood as previously and hit opposite way with firewood up and axe down.. 😉

Love the build! One suggestion, you will wear yourself out less and be more efficient if you change your technique. One hand at the bottom of the handle, one hand at the head of the axe. Swing the axe sort of around you sideways almost so that you don't waste energy and effort swinging it up and over your head. As you get the momentum going, once it's vertically over your head or abouts, then slide your hand that is at the axe head down to the other hand at the end as you swing the whole thing around. You get your whole body into the motion. Watching you start with it down your back and both hands in the same place makes me wince for your back!

9:20 instead of resetting by pulling out, you can try the reverse swing (since the log is usually heavier than the axe head, it carries more momentum). Swing the axe+log down into the block with the axe back hitting the block first. The momentum of the log will carry it through the blade.

@@frollard with any log small enough where it would be relatively easy to pick the ax up when it's embedded in the log, it's going to be so damn small that the acts will get it in one shot guaranteed. Because we're talking about a log that's only 20% heavier than the ax and at that point it's not resisting that ax don't even think about it
@frollard
@frollard Жыл бұрын
@@the_undead I must disagree on some level. (yes it's mostly moot). Upright axe on top only the axe head does work (when the head is jammed), but inverted the heavier log does the work. The axe head will stop more abruptly on the chopping block compared to wood on wood - imparting more jerk and acceleration for a given Ek input. Knotty wood isn't always a one and done despite being small enough.

Great! I mean, I have seen the idea in some technical magazines back in 1980s first and surely it have being around before. Probably there are some reasons this kind of axe did not get popular. But whatever keeps your sauna hot, I guess. Two notes on the work: a) when the axe got stuck in the log, one can swing it backwards, so the head of an axe lands first and the log you are splitting gets on top. That works the better the heavier the log is. b) your swing technique can be improved. If you start the swing in front of you, then go down by your side, behind the back, and then go overhead and down, you are saving yourself much work in that initial pulling the axe from behind your back. And add pretty much energy to the swing. Though I have never tried that with a four bladed axe, with regular Fiskars it works like a charm (it has flat handle, which makes correct alignment easier, BTW). And with a sledgehammer it is a standard technique.

Cool invention! Here in Sweden we cut down the trees in the winter, when the sap content is the lowest. Then we chop the wood in the spring, so it has plenty of time to dry up before the next winter when it will heat our homes. I prefer a cleaving axe, which is a special kind of axe with a very steep angle that breaks the wood apart more aggressively. With a large cleaving axe you can barely split a normal size piece in one hit. Your invention will make it even harder, and not save any time for that. And the most time consuming part of chopping wood is the large pieces that require a steel wedge. Many people use electrical log splitters here, but splitting with axe is actually faster (if you are good at it), and also gives a good workout.
