Being a Marine, I always am partial to ALICE. The only thing that comes close is an NVA rucksack I picked up as a souvenir many years ago. That thing has been almost indestructable. Semper Fi.

I have used the Medium and Large Alice since Vietnam. I like the versatility and the external frame as the frame can be used to haul things when the pack is removed. I built a shelf for mine (very handy). They are easily "field repaired", parts are still available and I have developed a way to make them extremely water resistant. If, you know how to use and modify the Alice you just can't go wrong.

Good video. Former SF here. My Master Sgt E8 on my ODA (Operational Detachment "A" Team, selected a the Large Alice fo rmy 12 man team. I liked it. He showed us, how big, by putting a whole Army footlocker INSIDE the rut lol. We junior guys were young and great shape so 110 -120 lbs was acceptable. Now, age 71, I struggle with 80, and carry 60 lbs but struggle. Body Armor and ammo is extra. I have a 25 lb pack for my German Sheppard and he carries his med kit and food. Thanks for sharing.

LC-1s have small D-rings in the bottom of the main pouch. You can use those D-rings to shrink the pack down to a small assault pack.

Just me- durability overrides all other factors. If you've ever been way the eff out in the sticks and had crucial gear crap out on you, you'll agree. I've had shoulder straps pull loose from lesser rucks, and a fairly expensive pair of boots come undone while out and about in BFE. Neither was field-repairable. Just had to gut it out and trudge back to basecamp

Thanks for the info. I've learned something. I've used an Alice Pack for decades for hiking but I never knew that top flap was velcroed together. I checked mine and yup, it opens. I also never knew you could slide an axe behind the pouches, I always put a hachet velcroed inside the frame. I also use the cargo shelf.

Kaufmans, as recommended by Blackie Thomas. That store has everything..well almost. Hopefully after my next spinal surgery and my healing up process, I'll be able to ruck it up again..( light weight). See you on Sunday. Oh i like the going back to basics Awesome AF.

What you have there is a Small/Med, I have the same set up but in Large/Medium! Mine has 3 small pockets below the 3 large pouches on the back!! I carried a Savotta back in the 80's(or the 90's) I did not care for it! Granted it was not that model (no idea what model it was). I much prefer my ALICE pack! As a backup I much preferred the British Ruck pack! There is a difference between a Catapult and a Trebuchet ( Catapult has a Pocket that launches your ballistic, using a tension system, the Trebuchet has a pocket attached to rope or chain then launched using a counterbalance (weight) system! I retired in 2006 with 30.5 years of service in the U.S. Army! Dec 1975 - May 2006

Corporal, you out did yourself. Here we go again. Another informative video. I've used Miss ALICE for years and I have to admit she's a keeper. But with age come age comes a squeeky body, and a greater desire for comfort. So I put together a USMC ILBE pack from NOS parts and sustainment pouches. I figured for camping and other circumstances a 'greyman' cover would work. I keep it filled with gear, some freezdried vittles, and all I need to add is a change of clothes and I'm set. I don't plan to 'run 'n gun' should things get dicey. But to be able to relocate as quickly as possible is beneficial.

However, I was extremely pleased to find that it isn’t a review of the newest and greatest but geared that is tried and true. I thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson of the development and use of these pieces or gear. It’s great to hear of how they were used and customized in the field. In short, this video is awesome. 👍👍👍 Savotta makes good quality gear. I have the Savotta Jääkäri S and am very happy with it. What makes this Pack range so good is it's simplicity .. BUT .. with the ability to be customised as the User requires. The range of accessories available and subsequent different configurations are to be seen to be believed. My little Jääkäri S .. I have added a chest strap, a set of the '4L' Pouches and a 'Beaver Tail'. When I need additional space, I just 'Molle On' the Side Pouches which gives me an additional 8 litres and then the Beaver Tail on the rear of the pack. Often, I just pack gear / whatever inside the Side Pouches and put those pouches inside the Pack, which gives me a nice streamlined exterior. If I require 'in the field' (such as with Grocery Shopping and the original 'list' has been turned into a 'free-for-all' .. 'specials' are not to be walked past if relevant 😁), then the side pouches are then just moved to the outside. The 'Beaver Tail' .. comes in handy for Jackets, Ponchos, Tarps, etc, when not needed at the time .. or a stack of firewood / whatever. When not required, it rolls up small and goes into the pack. A good comparison and not knocking the ALICE System (I have never used it .. different time, different theatre of ops). It looks to have acquitted itself well and judging from it's continuing popularity, will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..
