The Best Baits For Summer Pond Fishing! ( And Bank Fishing )

Күн бұрынThese are the baits we use to overcome shore fishing's unique challenges! We grew up walking creeks, ponds, and lakes in search of bass. Along the way we've developed a pretty solid strategy to catch those fish without spending a fortune and getting frustrated. Here is what we use and how we apply it to pond fishing to catch more fish!
Whether you're a pond fisherman, a bank fisherman, or you boat on shallow bodies of water, this information will help you succeed this Summer. The key to successful pond fishing is having a mix of reaction and finesse presentations. Its an added bonus if you're able to do it with inexpensive baits as well because when you're limited to shore, some break offs are bound to happen.

Having fished the same pond for over 45 years. Your techniques are spot on. Tactical bassin got me into lake fishing at the start of covid & both of you have taught almost everything on that. Loved the video Tim. Wish y’all would do a pond special every month !!! I started bass fishing just over one year ago. I’ve landed 306 bass !!! My PB is 3 lb 14 oz. Most of them were caught on a senko worm, a few on chatters, a few on spinners, and recently the whopper ploppers have been hot. Thanks again, love the channel. Tight Lines 👍🏼🙌🏼🎣

I learned a lot in ponds - unfortunately, Amazon just killed an entire pond ecosystem to build a massive data center in Chantilly, virginia. I fished it for 3 years - it's was an oasis in the middle of an industrial area constantly surrounded by animal prints (I'd always see them because I used the trails the deer made - I've only ever seen so many hoof prints on a trail the deer used as a travel corridor in GW National Forest.. there was also a huge beaver who I said every year. Blue heron, Foxes, raccoons, etc., in the summer, every "best" cover had a 3lb-8pb bass on it.. It was by-far the healthies waterbody in the area - 2 years of searching and nothing even comes close to the population of large bass that pond had (it was technically a chain of pond and this one I described was an overflow for a vanity pond at an office that was just as productive/healthy until 2 winters ago, when over 300 fish died (then 1 year later Amazon cut down every blade of grass and drained the pond down to inches (office workers still need some type of overflow pond... it's ethically disgusting and my first time seeing how "progress" harms the natural world.. I read Leopold, Thoreau, etc., but now I see for myself how their fight is back for living Americans/the world today. I can see why kids are so easily misled into subscribing to radical ideologies

Shot man even Roland martin still bank fish's lol he's up there too in the years. Owns his own charter service and 4 or 5 new boats lol. He said sometimes its just better, easier and more fun to hit a canal, pond or lake shore. Load up a couple rods and a small backpack then head out lol. I don't have a lot of places to bank fish so I mostly use a jon boat and trolling motor but still simple and fun. Even Jimmy Houston, Hank parker and a fee other legends bank fish. Love watching the old school guys get out on a bank and slam some bass.

Oh man I’m pumped and was nodding continually with a grin on my face watching this video made for “the rest of us.”. Your love of all types of fishing, from bank walking, float tubes, aluminum boats , kayaks, all the way up to bass boats really shows. I relate more to this video than perhaps any other. You touched on every fishermen’s story-certainly mine! I also liked you showing baits that I actually know and use! Thank you! Great tip on the machete. I used to fish a big pond across from my Dad's house in my late teens and I used to always carry a machete for access to the best spots. Love your channel. Your in depth advice is the best I've seen on KZfaq.

Gotta stress that shore anglers should invest in a quality reel that can get max distance on your casts. The difference on distance is getting that bait in the zone with your limited window. Cheers dudes

Actually a lot of shore fishing, for me, is short accurate casts to cover! I also do a bunch of bomb casting to get to schooling fish, but yeah. I do a lot of short casts.

The mini max in bluegill is hands down my #1 confidence lure. I fish ponds mostly and when nothing else works it will get me a bite. If it weren't for fish getting conditioned to lures, I'd only fish 3 things. Mini max, popper and Texas rig. But we know that you have to have more tricks up our sleeves. Great video as always.

Agreed, my fav is top water for the blow-ups. I have several Walmart or Ozark trail lures from spinners, frogs, prop baits. Great content, shows me I'm not alone in several techniques I'm using in and out of my kayak.

Wonderful video. I wish there were more instructional videos like what you guys do geared toward bank/pond fishermen. That's really all that's available within a couple hour drive from where I am. The ponds around here fairly often get the snot beat out of them by folks fishing. I bet the little 1/2 acre pond down the road from me averages 6-10 people a day fishing it for 1-3 hrs each. That is *HIGH* pressure for a little pond.

Super fluke is my #1 pond bait. Remember to mix up size based on forage fish and activity of bite. Sometimes the tiny fluke on a 1/0 hook is the only thing they will hit. Caught a 5 lber on a tiny fluke at a local pond that I was convinced only had dinks.

Lighter weights are better for ponds so when the lure hits bottom it doesn't get buried in the muck my favorite is a grip pin or just a weighted ewg best Hook for ponds not totally weightless but not too much also works great for buzz toads

Thanks Tim, great video. This is what I do now. Had a boat, have a kayak but can't sit in one for any length of time so shore fishing it is. I got a backpack and a lightweight chair so I can walk or sit as i please. I also narrowed it down to topwater, weedless swimbaits, and texas rigged craws and worms. It's down to basics fishing and I love it. Keep up the great work guys

Whopper plopper has worked wonders for me. Picked one up recently out of curiosity even though I’ve never caught a bass on topwater and managed to catch my pb on the second cast. And since then I’ve been catching more bass than I’ve ever caught on anything else.

Hey Tim, I'm just curious. How old are you? I'm 40 and I remember when Banjo minnows were the big thing. I still think the rubber band on the hook was a pretty cool concept. I grew up mostly bank fishing but then my dad had to retire from Ford early due to injuries he bought a house on a lake and a pontoon boat. We sucked at fishing but still had lots of fun. I think my dad didn't like to buy nice lures because he knew my brother and I would probably get them snagged and loose them. We didn't even know how to tie proper knots back then. I actually learned more recently how to do a lot of things in the fishing world and mostly through you and Matt's videos. I really appreciate all of the tips bud. I can go out now and catch nice bass and northern pike. It's something I really needed in my life.

My wife loves / swears by the Zoom Super Hog watermelon red flake for our pond fishing adventures. She kills it on that bait, she literally calls it old trusty when we head out to fish. Fished weightless on an EWG.

I’d add a swimming worm. My fav is Gambler Burner Worm. Can T-rig it and sneak over and in between Lilly pads and weed lines and it flat out catches em. I use 6” for ponds on a 3/0 EWG hook to keep it simple since I already have those hooks for other presentations.

Tim great to see you do a pond video. Over the past 18 months, I have learned so much from you and Matt. I use to catch bass from my backyard on a senko first Texas rigged, then wacky rigged then Neko rigged. Over time, I think the bass got use to seeing my green pumpkin senko and I changed things up throwing a whopper plopper, lipless crankbait and a square bill (bluegill or baby bass color) but even these baits stopped working as the bass got use to them. Then I threw the Ned rig including the new Yamamoto Ned bait and switched to the Yamamoto d Shad Neko rigged (a technique I learned from you). Lately, I switched to fire craw Yamamoto senkos Ned rigged and especially margarita mutilator colored Roboworms on a drop shot. It’s a constant battle but keep up the tips!

Thanks Tim. Most of the bank of the small lake I fish looks like you background in your video, so absolutely no trebles. Also, one thing you do not mention is algae. By lake is loaded with it. I spend more time picking algae from my baits than I do casting.

Happy to see a swimbait hook being used on the fluke. When using a weighted 2 or 3/0 swimbait hook, it almost has a swimming action to it. But definitely changes the action.

Im a kayak angler so I fish alot of giant ponds/small lakes. I'm not sure where the line is drawn between the 2? But their perfect for kayak fishing & have a lot less pressure than these big popular lakes. One of my local honey holes I pulled out a 7lb 4oz, then a 5lb 8oz & then a 8lb 6oz including another 12 small bass all in less than 6hours. It was an absolute amazing morning for me! That 8.6 is my new PB largemouth. I'm trying to break the 10lb really hard. Actually lost a bigger bass today. Idk how big it really was but definitely bigger than my PB. It jumped about 15' from my kayak. Spit the bait & hook it 2 different directions. Then sway away & laughed at me... It still hurts! But I know theres big ones in there!!! I usually have it all to myself, which is even better! When I show people pics of my big catchs I tell them their from one of big popular lakes. Keep these hidden gems to myself as long as I can!!!!

For ponds with the shallower water, like say 3-8 feet deep I've been fishing the original chatterbait mini. It's 1/4 oz with a 3/0 hook. Hook is not as tough as the one on the mini max, but I am finding that the mini max has more issues than the mini. #1 the price is higher. #2 the blade is smaller and weaker. It bends really easily. #3 the skirts keep falling apart. But, if I want a more subtle presentation, the mini max does not vibrate as hard, so that is where I have been limiting my use of the mini max to. Otherwise I'm usually throwing the mini. I like it with an inverted 3.25" rage swimmer. It's small but big fish will eat it. I've caught a lot of 3+ pounders, a couple of 5+ pounders, and 1 which was 6.25. I've only been fishing this lure for about 8-10 months. I used to be all about the paddle tail swimmers, and the bigger chatterbaits. Not anymore. Love the chaterbait mini. The paddle tails work well through the weeds, but don't have the drawing power. The bigger chatterbaits just sink too fast, and are constantly in the weeds, unless you burn them so fast a fish can't catch it. You can do the sink and rip, but the lure gets too covered with weeds, and fish just won't bite on a ball of weeds. The mini, doesn't sink as fast, and you can just tick it off the tops of the weeds at a slower pace.

I was thinking of buying a bass powler to get my dad out on the water he's getting up in age and I can tell he wants to be out there because it's a grind on shore hopefully it holds up on the waves and he don't fall off on a windy day at the lake we need to do something though! I found a cheap motor and trolling motor online fingers crossed 🤞

Interesting you have a paddle tail as the trailer for a mini max. In prior videos you have shown not to run a paddle tail with a chatterbait since it messes up the action.

Sometimes I wonder if I just need to treat every lake in CO like a pond. If you want a really good looking minimax, throw a Rage ned cut-R on the back.

Thanks for the information, it's always good to hear that Iam using pretty much the same lures you are suggesting!! my to go lure instead of the creature bait it's the Zoom Speed Worm, so versatile! but 4 out of 5 ain't bad right? Love your videos, learn so much from them!

I think maybe you guys grew up in poverty like most of us born in the 80's-90's America? Blue-collar families? I think that's why you and Matt are so honest and down to earth, that or you're just honest good men. You guys have helped me far more than just in bass fishing. I wont bore you with my sob story, but I am a child sex abuse survivor who was addicted to heroin from 15 to 27.. My son was born 6 years ago, also been bass fishing and learning from you and Matt for 1 year longer, so 7 years. Me starting bass fishing saved my life. I had quit dope, but I had dug myself such a deep hole during my hard times I was born into (still is a bit, but I'm making progress now), but I was still doing other drugs and making most of my income from violent crime and drugs... I have no mentors, no good or honest men in my life. Since childhood I have only known abuse and persecution from my peers and society. I have no one, because every friend died or went to jail or is still actively in addiction, so I stay away and alone; but bass fishing has changed my life - I learned how to be a good man, in part, from you and Matt. I do everything I can to pay back what I gained from bass fishing and you guys (seeing your families/wives was the first time in my life I had seen a couple legitimately in love who share hobbies.. In my town, I only ever knew dysfunctional families - a lot of my friend's parents were junkies just like us, it's no wonder we followed in their footsteps at such a young age. Anyway, I'm rambling - my point is this: you and Matt making these videos that seem to only be about fishing, are actually far more than that and they help guys like me, who have known nothing but pain and suffering, dysfunction and abuse, realize there is another way (because we see your character/personality - I have a few men like you two who I model my life/treatment of others and of the world around me after (because before I was a monster - at one point I faced 2 felonies that both carried 5-25 years - I can't trust my own past ethics or emotions). I owe you guys and your families a great debt and I would gladly jump in front of a bullet for anyone in the Little or Allen families. Thank you for being good, honest men and sharing your experience and wisdom with us. I'm not a junky criminal now, thanks to Jesus Christ + bass fishing and tacticalbassin, I'm a bass angler who has developed his skills beyond the average dude - just being alive and turning 33 in a few days is a miracle. Thank you, Tactical Bassin team.

This is so POWERFUL! Thank you for taking the time and having the courage to comment. I'm at a loss for words and looking for a tissue honestly…. I am so happy to hear that you are clean and making progress. It sounds like it has been an unbelievably tough and unfair road for you. I am glad you and your son are spending time together fishing. Those are memories that will last a lifetime for you both. Spending quality time with your son and being a good role model will help him later on. I watched my dad die when I was 15. For me, fishing was the only way to escape the world and cope before I got to know Jesus. Your story really hits home and I really appreciate you giving all of us a little insight into your life and how fishing has helped you overcome so much. @tacticalbassin thank you for responding, Tim (and everyone else at Tacticalbassin). I had no idea about your father, he would be proud of the man you've become and how you've helped so many people. I'm sure there's other guys like me you all have helped greatly - most of us stay silent.. Thanks again, guys. Words can't describe how much you've helped me grow. I actually have my son this weekend - taking him to the Potomac once he wakes up. He likes you guys a lot too, I tell him all about you and he sits down and learns with me (he's only 6 and a bit of a class clown type, doesn't like school... but the in outdoors he pays attention!)

Tim/Matt, I live on the Tennessee River 2 minutes from Wilson dam. The other night I was fishing a flat late in the evening and the hybrid stripe were boiling up and shredding shad balls. I lost count how many I caught between a whopper plopper and a square bill crankbait. My question is - what do I do to get to the largemouth through this swarm of stripe and are there even largemouth mixed in? Thanks for all the vids. Over the years I have learned a ton from you both.

When Tim said "make sure you have writen permission" i just chuckled a little bit. 90% of the residental ponds have no fishing signs besides for residents. Ever heard the saying some rules are meant to be broken? Ill fish until someone says something and most of the time in the past 6 years of bank fishing ive only have two or three people approach me and ask me to leave.

Unless you stay in a big major city, ponds are also super pressured. Most fishing done all around the world is bank fishing, not everyone have enough money to afford a boat
