As anyone who has read www.thesurvival... knows, I'm a big fan of growing tropical fruit outside their natural range. I'm particularly fond of growing bananas, having tried varieties such as Thai Black, 1,000 Fingers, Orinoco, Texas Star, Raja Puri, Dwarf Red and others. My friend Joe Pierce at the Mosswood Farm Store in Micanopy, Florida has taken banana growing to a further level and is testing a wide range of banana trees to see which ones do the best through the freezes and will produce bananas outside the tropics. Today he takes us on a tour of his banana plot and shares a wide range of varieties from cold-hardy bananas that are ornamental, to Rhino Horn plantains to excellent fruiting bananas that have consistently produced for him. When folks think of growing bananas in Florida, they often don't think of growing bananas in North Florida - but that's what you'll see in today's highly informative video.

I got a dwarf orinoco for my birthday over a decade ago. Today there's 8 growing in its place from offshoots and I can't count how many clusters of bananas I've got over the years. Never watered, never fertilized, just stuck the original in the ground and ignored it. The only tending is picking apart the dead stalks or propping them up so clusters ripen on the plant.

@maat son that one was just planted from a pup I bought offline about a month ago. It's still small but seems to be doing well! I'm excited to see how it does. Edit: it is definitely one of the prettiest bananas in the yard. Has beautiful varigation on the smaller leaves and very intense colouration. The stalk is a deep purple.

Hi.Great video you got there. Here's some other things if you'd like to experiment with. Fertilizer programme: Month 1 - 5: 16:16:16 (150g/plant/month) Month 6: MOP (100g/plant - one time application only on month 6 or when you see the last short leaf before flowering comes out) + 12:12:17:2(100g/plant/month) Month 7 till harvest: 12:12:17:2 (150g/plant/month) For the suckers to ensure maximum growth. 2 ways to go around it. Cut and don't dig as to not damage the roots. First: Only keep 1 at 3 months old and another at 8 months old. Second: Only keep one once the flower comes out. Choose only sword suckers as this is the one with vigorous growth rate. As for leaves. Maintain 8 leaves while growing, 6 once the flower comes out and 4(excluding the small leaves before flowering) once you cut the flower. Cut the flower around 2 inch after the last bunch. Just sharing. Happy gardening everyone.

This is an awesome video! The only banana that I can grow in NY reliably is Musa basjoo. I’ve had it for 5 years in the ground, and overwintered with a foot of mulch through -15°F! Musa basjoo is not edible, just beautiful... I’m experimenting with velutina, Sikkimensis ‘Red Tiger’

Great work. It's possible to make it happen, but it does take some serious work. In my book Push the Zone: The Good Guide to Growing Tropical Plants Beyond the tropics, I share a lot of stories. A former neighbor in TN used to grow a banana tree in his yard through the warm months, then dig it out and wrap up and keep it in his crawl space through the freezing winter. Dedication!

I have a spot in the backyard that I think will be pretty shielded from Northwind but there is not much of a tree canopy there or I can go in the front yard under Jacaranda tree it may be more exposed to wind there. Any suggestions where to plant this banana? I have a standard size yard in St. Petersburg a couple of miles from the beach. with Mature Jacaranda tree in the front yard and mature avocado and backyard. Thank you

You need to hand pollinate the female flowers (at the top of the raceme, attached to mini bananas) of one variety to the male flowers (bottom of the raceme, pure flower) of the other variety. You also have to keep a bee/insect proof net or bag around the raceme of the female flowers during the flowering period to prevent bees from introducing unintended pollen from a different source. It’s a lot of work.

+pj snedeker It depends on how long it stays below freezing. Just for a few hours, no big deal. For a day, then the stems are toast and have to grow back from the ground the next year. My bet is yes, you can grow some. I'd tuck them along the south wall of a building for maximum protection.

My grandfather to own a banana farm up near the Queensland border in New South Wales in Australia here :- i2.au.reastatic.net/600x800-resize,extend,r=33,g=40,b=46/fb8ed18a9cc5fbd7ea0444fc5e09a446c560f92adb622e6931c18b4a1de67b75/image5.jpg The bananas were grown behind the house and the sheds as well as across the creek up into the mountains, they made a flying fox out of fence wire, bicycle rims & a hook & rollers which was used to transport the Banana 🍌 bunches across the creek so they could get packed in the banana shed. They were the lady finger variety which was better suited to the subtropical climate & they were sweet tasting bananas as well, further north in Queensland, it's got a more tropical climate & is where the Cavendish bananas are grown up near Cairns because they really need a temperature of 27°C (80°F) to grow all year around. My dad moved 600 kilometres (360 miles) south to find work back 50 years ago which is 150 kilometres (90 miles) North of Sydney (Newcastle area) but some people do grow bananas as a hobby in my area. I bought a couple of lady finger banana 🍌 plants a couple of weekends ago which I want to plant on my new property that I'm going to eventually move to this year some time ! Our plant hardiness zone is USDA 10b or Zone 4 in Australia right from South Sydney in New South Wales to the North of Brisbane in Queensland yet our commercial banana 🍌 growing region extends to Coffs Harbour & technically Kempsey & that's about it, even the lady finger bananas aren't commercially grown in the Newcastle & Sydney areas !
