Very good video topic. Most gear disagreements among bass players come from the fact that we need vastly different tools to do our jobs, depending on genre. Especially if you're an older musician playing a basic genre like blues or classic rock, you need to develop an understanding that there's more to life than P bass into Ampeg with no pedals.

That was awesome, completely out of reach for most but still awesome. I really enjoyed fantasizing about top of the line gear as i am the proud owner of a super fabulous Affinity P-bass that came in the Fender Bass Starter kit i bought in december 2020 as the Covid pandemic was keeping me home. Anyway, cheers Gregor! EDIT: Oh my bucket list bass would probably a Sandberg California 4 string, 24 frets perfection.

I've been lucky enough to have some great instruments and amps. Over the years, I had a terrific custom cabinet made, a TL cabinet with an EVM-15L speaker, over the years, powered it with an Ampeg V4 (the guitar head), but later, a Fender 300PS, basically Fender's take on an SVT. I've always like Fender better than Ampeg. That was my favorite amp, but I hated moving it! I had a custom 1977 Rickenbacker 4001, but had lots of problems with the neck, until TWA snapped the headstock off in 1979, and with the settlement, I bought a used 75 Carl Thomson bass, which I eventually sold, then bought back, and still have it. I've also got an Alembic Distillate that's amazing, but if I could have anything, I'd love an Alembic Series II, along with the Alembic F-2B preamp and the SF-2 Super Filter, to MacIntosh amps (pretty much the old touring rig of Phil Lesh.) And I LOVE Phil Jones equipment, I've played some of their compact and mid-range amps, and they're absolutely amazing! While I don't own any amps these days, (I've been playing with Amplitube 5,) I do use Phil Jones headphones, which are spectacular.

Klegor's not just endorsing particular guitars here -- he's also saying something about passive versus active instruments. Just look at his favorites. And even in the category lists, the active instrument is often a throw-in because sometimes you need one. It's an interesting point.

If you were gonna do a funk, slap type with a brighter sound, so I'd say the none flats which I'd assume would be round wound, which bass would you use for that? Either would be a great choice but which bass would you be picking?
@noahfreeman8115
@noahfreeman8115 Жыл бұрын
@@adamdixon6326 tbh you can do funk on any of the classic three (P, J, and Stingray) - slap is better on a J and a stingray. personally i’d choose the stingray for funk and slap. check out Fernando Rosa, he does all that on all kinds of stuff

Since I'm on the other side of the Atlantic, I can't afford ANY of the basses & amps shown here; but my perfect rig would be: a Sterling SUB with an HH modification and maple fingerboard, any jazz bass with 21 frets and maple fingerbord with an active preamp mod , a Dean Edge VI fretless and just a Focusrite. As for amps, I'd go for an Ampeg SVT (after I sell my kidneys). Anyway, great video Gregor. Greetings from Argentina.

My dream rig is the B&G Big Sister, Cort A4 Ultra, Cort Elrick NJS, or the Cort Rithimic (yes I love Cort basses a bit too much it seems lol) Amps its between the Aguilar Tone Hammer with the Aguilar SL410 Cab, or the Bergantino Forte HP with the Bergantino NXV410 cab. Pedal/Non amp either the Nueral DSP Quad Cortex or the Line 6 Helix. I already use Helix native on my laptop and love it.

Hey Gregor! Nice video as always 👌 Just a little suggestion for future videos; I noticed you did mention an italian Amp, the GR, but no italian basses so I think you REALLY should check out Manne, Laurus and Meridian. Laurus is perfect for jazz, it sets the notch so high. For Pop, R&B and stuff, Meridian makes a great choice, better the other brands you put on this list. And finally, Manne... it's mainly used by jazz and rock players but, believe me, Manne basses growl so hard they would make Dingwalls pale out. I got one, a "basic" model, 5 string and graphite fretboard, and though I played dozens of basses no one compares to this model. Give them a go, you won't regret it 😎

I have a 5-string Sterling by Music Man Stingray Subray5 HH. Two humbuckers, two band EQ of bass and treble and 22-fret maple neck with maple fingerboard. Maybe not so much the single humbucker sting rays, but the double humbuckers are grate for Hard Core to mild technical death metal. I also have an Ibanez SR306EB 6-string bass with 24-frets and a 3 band EQ with Bass, Mid, and Treble. It also has a coil selector switch on it. Now that thing will work grate with extreme technical death metal especially if you put new stainless steel round wound strings on it. Of course you can play other kinds of music with them. But for basics, I have a 4-string Silver Tone P Bass with 20-frets. completely passive. I got that as a birthday gift from my family in 2006. So that thing is very special to me.

I have a number of basses, including a P, a J, a Ric and a Stingray; I bought them all new in the 70s, and a number of amps. Today? I use an Alembic Elan+ six-string bass and a Kemper profiler for virtually everything. There are few basses that can match the versatility of an Alembic, and the Kemper has essentially all the amps and speaker combinations one could want in a single box.

If money is no object, I want a Testore (father or son, I don't care) and a Prescott 5 string to shake the orchestra off of the stage (you didn't say it HAS to be an electric bass). Then a vintage precision, as old as I can find. I would like an eight string, but don't know enough to make a specific selection. Lastly, I want a six string Electric buck down to a low G instead of a high c. I'm fairly open to Brand on that as well, Maybe I try one of those German bases that you were mentioning. I love the Rheingold preamp/ EQ pedal, and I also want the Motown DI. I would like the classic SVT with 8x10 cabinet, but to that I would add some sort of modern rig. It is not a terribly decisive list, and I think it's clear that I have not really explored all options that are out there. I guess I am just used to using what I have playing it as well as I can. My Peavey T40 has served me well for decades.

Hm... bucket list gear. I'd like to have an Ibanez SR5000 OL - but passive (I don't like active basses). I doubt that there'll any to buy... but I can still dream. Other than that maybe a PJ Briefcase Combo and a Peavey T. B. Raxx Preamp. Had one decades ago and still regret selling it. To be honest: these are all nice things to have. Do I really need them? No. Just as you said: bucket list gear when money is no concern😉

I agree that a P, a Rick and a Music Man are the perfect combo for all types of music though I would not recommend a Music Man for a 5er since the neck is so narrow. As for a Pre-amp, you can't go wrong with the good old Sans Amp. The early "Tele style slab body" P basses are cool but I don't find them to have a definitive sound nor are they indicative of any style of music or player. The Fodera? Pffft. Had one. An overrated, overpriced toneless wonder. The Aquilar is nice but I don't like the tone controls. I have a Mark Bass and it works fine. As for cabs -- they're so personal and there are several good choices. I mix a Bergantino with a Hartke. It gives me a clarity along with a punch that suits my styles, but that's a personal choice. And for a jazz gig, I can take just one cab. For fretless, I go with a Fender Jazz. That's the classic fretless sound. The SVT is cool, but honestly, the Sans Amp can get you close. As for the big cabinet...I don't see the point. Any time you need that much volume you'll be going through a P.A. anyway. I also have a place in my heart for Ibanez basses. Clean, clear, active sound, looks sleek and doesn't break the bank.
