I own one exactly like the one in the demo. I see there are a number of comments about the cost and comparisons etc. Until you pick one of these up, the arguments are easy. Once you do, the answer is clear. These are simply amazing top shelf basses that are incredible to play and sound amazing. The neck is amazing and I agree that the body has something about that feels played in. Hard to describe. It just feels different. Good different. I find myself drawn to this bass over my others time and time again. It’s a monster.

I love my BBP35. The neck definitely feels rock solid. You've got the classic P-bass sound, but a bit more refined. Adding in the Jazz pickup can give it a really Hi-Fi character that sounds great, really brings out the articulation, and helps define the B-string. Would recommend it to anyone interested in one.

Nick, this review and your answers to my questions were instrumental in my recent purchase of a used BBP34, and I thank you. I got a great deal and the timing was perfect -- the seller was getting out of the business and surprised me by including about $150 worth of extras (high-end strap, tuner, cables, capo and more) that he no longer had a need for. As for the bass itself, I couldn't be happier. It was all I was looking for and more. Thanks for all you do.

Nice playing! I have this bass and quite like it. I play in a drop tuning (drop C#) and with it strung thru the body I was finding the strings to be pretty floppy even after making adjustments to the truss rod and action. Just couldn't seem to stop the clanky sound of the string smacking the fret. I don't get that from other basses. Took those same strings and slung them thru the bridge and for whatever reason it feels better now.

Thanks a lot for the nice review! Could you possibly tell me about how much the sound of neck pickup of BBP34 is different from Fender precision? And I haven't decided to choose between BB734 and BBP34 yet; if you have tried BB734, could you explain about the difference between passive tone of 734 and P34? Would it be still worth to buy P34 tough it is more expensive than 734?

I've been jonesing for one of these for quite a while (and they're never in stock)...but....the price jumped quite a bit on them....AND...I saw one video where someone was demoing one....and the jazz pickup was HORRENDOUSLY noisy....like almost to the point where I thought something had to be wrong with it....or the person was filming in a really bad room, or something......but it took the wind out of my sails a little bit, to be honest.....I'm just wondering....did/do you have a problem with the J pickup on this as far as noise is concerned?

The GREATEST improvement of this series of Yamaha BB basses is the fact that you can now install aftermarket pickups. The major achilles heel of all BB basses was that Yamaha designed their pickups with their stock design-only components that never allowed you to swap out the pickups with aftermarket upgrades without making some drastic alteration to the pickup cavity on the body...The pre-amp still needs work, but it's tolerable.

You're in luck, because the stock pickups in both this and the BB734A are stellar. Buy a Fender? Yeah throw in a Bareknuckle or Fralin right after unboxing. Buy a Yamaha? You're all good, YGD pickups are phenomenal these days. It wasn't always like this, but they have really upped their game. Oh and this bass has no preamp to "need work", BTW - it's passive only :)

interesting commentary on the IRA vibration treatment of this bass. I don't think you answer comments much, but I might as well ask if you have any thoughts on how the "maturity" of the instrument compares to other basses you have bought new and owned for many years?
@helloitsnicko
@helloitsnicko 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! I do answer almost if not all the comments I receive, I just tend to answer a big bunch in one go. Which is happening right now! But ok to answer your question, the only brand new bass I've got to compare it to, conveniently, is a Mexican Fender P. And I must say, without a shadow of a doubt, the Yamaha definitely sounded older. However it's unfortunately been too long since I tried it out to say whether it felt more played-in than the Fender... so I can't answer that one. :)

I have its little brother, the BB735A. Maybe the best value PJ style bass on the market. One thing about these Basses are that it’s not just a P bass with a Jazz pickup added. That back pickup fights back and is not the wimpy cousin that often appears with this pickup configuration.

Nick - Phenomenal Playing! Thanks. PLEASE can you answer one question? I cannot find the answer to this anywhere on the web. Why would Yamaha make this an exclusively PASSIVE Bass (at $1500 USD), but then give excellent Active & Passive options on the little brother, the BB 734A (at $750 USD). That seems backwards! Is Passive (only) somehow "better"? Please enlighten me, brother. Thanks for all you do.
@jazzman1954
@jazzman1954 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I would always go passive. However I suspect Yamaha have upgraded other aspects of this bass and its Japanese made as opposed to Chinese. Probably the next grade up is active and more expensive. For me passive is warmer and more organic without the flat battery terror!

It doesn't have the clinicness because the pu's are voiced after older P pu's. The treatment is just a gimmick. Just like the mitier joint bullshit. Important ist the wood and hardware quality, the overall built quality, the placement and quality of the pu's and electronics. The most important thing is the freatwork. Without proper fretwork everything else is useless. I tried a Sire V5. The sound is outstanding good. But it's a cheap ass mass produced instrument with cheap wood and components. Even if you PLEK the frets and change the hardware. The wood remains cheap.
