That’s right… They didn’t even use final cut. Because final cut is a joke compared to resolve. And if you noticed they tested the light levels and made the light levels perfect for the iPhone. Try doing that in real life.@@sandrovitalini1629

I tweeted about Apple not using an iPhone 15 to film the 15's launch. It's pretty awesome they came through this time and at least did it for this. Kudos to the them!

Im pretty sure they actually did, but just didn't announce it, judging by the quality of the presentation. Their older presentations were probably shot on cinema cameras, while the past two presentations were iPhone quality.

I would actually take the DJI Pocket 3 Creative Combo over an iPhone 15 if I was just beginning. You get a 1" sensor, a gimball, a mic, tripod, a very usable 2" screen plus all the benefits of the custom shooting modes. So far for me, it's been a great camera.

BUT!!! You can’t make a phone call *while* filming video - which is insanely stupid! If I’m filming b-roll, and don’t need audio, and disable the mic in the video app, WHY can’t I answer a phone call? Or listen to an audio book? Filming a 30 minute world world wide campaign video? Suuuuure, but talking on the phone while filming a video without sound? Nope, sorry, that’s too heavy maaaaan …

I’m pretty impressed with what an iPhone can do. The ability record to SSD is a pretty sweet feature. They can still overheat pretty easy, but this is a nice camera that can also be a phone 😂.

I just watched the behind the scenes. I was also struck that they edited it with DaVinci resolve, they had it on the screens in the background and thanked blackmagic at the end. What does this say about how apple sees Final Cut Pro?

I noticed a couple of minutes in that it was probably shot on iPhone. It was good enough for me to doubt myself though, until they confirmed my suspicions at the end.

It's all about lighting. simple as that. my biggest issue with this whole "shot on iPhone" is they don't show people the insane amount of light needed for that tiny sensor to look good

u r correct lighting is the most imp thing -- note "right" is a hate word so i use "correct" ("left" was seen as "dumb" c etymology)

upgraded from iPhone 7 plus to iPhone 15 pro. Disappointingly expected the battery to be stronger than my iPhone 7, but it wasn't by a lot. Everything else bangs tho.

Battery is pretty hard to get leaps in because the 15 pro not only gets a slightly better battery than before but gets stronger which means it kinda cancels out the new battery because it drains more juice so basically battery performance is at a halt right now unless they make it thicker

14 doesn’t have Log, which makes a huge difference. But if you’re going to upgrade and soend money, you might as well buy a 2nd hand mirrorless camera like a fujifilm XT3, XS20, a sony a7siii. Despite the hype, the truth is the iphone 15 doesn’t come close to what real cameras can do, in terms of both image quality and utility.

I had the iPhone 14 pro max and upgraded to the 15 reluctantly, but honestly I feel like the 15 has better colors than the 14 and also looks less digital am I wrong? love your stuff Matti! Do you recommend a LUT for the iPhone Log footage?

This video and others (from you and others haha) has made me decide to ditch my A6400 and buy a 15 pro max. iPhone is simple and convenient. A6400 isn't and if i'm honest with myself the faff of setting up a camera and everything that goes with it has put me off using it. Useful videos like this are what youtube is about! Thank you.

I think the best beginner camera is an actual camera, not a Smartphone that has a camera. In this event’s case, it’s Apple’s production, not the camera. They could’ve gotten even better footage with a used fujifilm XT3 for $500, which allows you to control basic settings like shutter speed without needing to download an app. A beginner can’t learn how to manual focus or anything with an iPhone, it’s a limitation. This is coming from someone that learned the hard way, starting out with Moment Lenses for my iPhone X, thinking it was all I needed. That event footage definitely looks like iPhone footage to my eye too.

My thoughts exactly. Saying that anyone starting shooting should get an iPhone is nonsense to me. Get a good second-hand DSLR and learn manual settings, focus pulling... And as you progress you can even buy better lenses, which you cannot do with a smartphone. Learning how to operate a cheap second hand DSLR or video camera will teach you so much more than handling an iPhone. Today, you can even get a proper video camera like a Canon C100 with a 50mm for less than 1000 bucks. That's at least 500 less than an iPhone and you have some money left for lighting equipment. And you get to use an actual video camera which will teach you a whole lot more! And that's not to say that you cannot get good looking videos on an iPhone: my point is that it is simply not the best tool to learn video shooting if you are serious about learning it.

I couldnt agree more i film all my videos and take all my images using iphone 13 pro max and sometimes i edit on mac sometimes i edit on phone. Also i used to use andorid for years and windows for yesra but for editing and video editing apple does better job.

But also they had like 4x $26k Arri Sky Panels lighting the hero shot of Tim Cook, so it's kinda pointless to say that it was the iPhone. You could probably get the iPhone 11 or any flagship phone from the last few years and it would look pretty good too. 10bit Prores log might have helped, but don't expect to have good lowlight performance like they would have you believe.

Also, You can get a mirrorless camera with a much larger sensor that shoots 10bit 422 internally for $700. No way is an iphone that doesn’t even allow to touch control basic settings like Shutter speed, Aperture and ISO without having to download an app the best beginning camera

Uhmmm, cant you get a FullFrame a7iii used For like $1.5k or a BMPC 4k or $1.2 + a m42 converter and 3 used old analog lenses for maybe a $100 more. I mean the Iphone is amazing and yes you shouldn't use gear as an excuse. If you already have an Iphone and dont have a camera, then indeed the Iphone is the best beginner camera for you. However, saying that its the "best" beginner camera is stretching it a bit. The premise of this video is good, shoot more and learn > Camera that you are using, but if you are looking to get your feet wet in video or photography, there are options that are miles better, which give you more learning opportunities that the iphone doesn't.

Thank you. Matti compared the iPhone 15 to an alexa, but the BMPCC 4k has been out for 5 years and it has been used for years to cut perfectly with alexas. Plenty of cameras that are under 1k will work great and allow you to learn how to shoot. So basically, the iPhone 15 is now getting quality similar to a 7-year-old M43 camera. Which is fine, but I don't see why all these youtubers keep saying this.

@@jessecumberledge4530 I think he was making a point of how you dont need good gear to learn and that sometimes "worse" cameras are better for your project/situation, which is a good point, but honestly braw on the Pocket 4k is not even comparable to the Iphone 15, the sensor on the phone is just too small, the whole image looks a lot cheaper especially when there are now drones with bigger sensors who get a cleaner image. Not even gonna mention the fact that the small sensor is going to get exponentially worse the darker it gets, I mean hell the Sony a6000 which is 400$ and is super old will still get you a cleaner image in low light than an Iphone and the pocket 4k is still being used today on huge projects as a crashcam/bcam because its just that good/cheap. You can practice composition, story telling, lighting and a lot more on the iphone but you cant change lenses, and god knows that at Iphone 24mm and a fullframe 24mm are not even close. All in all, its not bad to say the Iphone is amazing and that it DEFINITLY has its place in cinematography/photography, but "the best beginner camera" is just too much for me honestly.

If your style is a through and through sharp image under very controlled light, then your claim is right. For the rest, sorry, but no. Even under normal conditions, you alwasy have to deal with recflecting light. These conditions in the video where so extremely controlled. No spotlight, nothing. Why should I work with a lot of workarounds to let the image look the way I wanted, when I can get something that works immediately. This is to much hype for an extremely closed camera. If someone can't afford an SIII, go for an A6700 with some sigma lenses or what ever. But that is a better invest than an iPhone.

This is entirely nonsense though. Any decent sensor will give a great result with 300 dollars of lighting and an expensive gimbal and drone or on a full steadcam rig. It's ok having a 1500 dollar camera ... if you need half a million dollars elsewhere to get the result. It's like me buying a 1980's Skoda and putting a Formula 1 engine in it ... of course it will be fast ... but it will no longer be cheap.
