I can’t help but feel like if Griffith had simply kept his mouth shut and let the king get his rage out of his system, he might have kept his tongue and tendons. About sending the Band of the Hawk to Doldrey. I think the king made the logical decision there. Committing the full army and losing would have significantly weakened the kingdom, the Band of the Hawk was a political liability due to their low birth rank, losing them wouldn't have effected the stability of the kingdom. They were the most sacraficable force (pun intended) and it was an open secret to anyone.
@jokhard8137
@jokhard8137 3 ай бұрын
This. It just makes sense: if someone's expendable, expend that resource first. Sending the son of a noble family to a "certain death" would have been far more difficult of a decision to make.
@ythandlename
@ythandlename 2 ай бұрын
It made perfect sense too. He even said it was a small force that was willing and they won't lose too much to put in hope on a small and recently promoted group that brought results. From a monarch's pov, it was the best decision because either they win and the king looks insightful for putting faith in the commoners or the band gets rekt'd and the noblemen would be appeased at their own prejudice reinforced so the king will wash his hands of Griffith if he was doomed. Most of the King of Midland's actions before turning against Griffith felt appropriate because he could focus entirely on rulership so long as his daughter remained chaste and his fetish was kept at bay.

@@williamcortelyou9072That would make for a fascinating what-if story actually. If something, anything could happen to interrupt Griffith from entering charlotte’s bedchamber. Maybe from Guts saying something more at their parting instead of monologuing inside his head…some moment of solace or clarity happens for Griffith between the hill and the palace balcony. Years pass and Griffith has thoroughly entrenched himself within the nobility of Midland such that the king views him like an adopted son and freely offers his daughter’s hand in marriage to Griffith (after some soul searching, naturally). So with Griffith bound for accession to prince/king consort, he’s basically achieved his dream right? But then of course the Kushan inevitably invade and it’s basically going to be a steamroll unless something changes. …This would probably result in the Eclipse happening anyway, wouldn’t it?

A perfect summary of him, and honestly to a certain degree I feel bad for him. Not just because of how painful stress can be, reducing one's appearance in ways age can't, but for him to be simply known as "The King of Midland", which was a deliberate intent on the part of Miura Kentaro, it goes to show how much of a burden being a king or leader is. It was truly his prison, the throne, crown, and being king. Though actions indeed have consequences, one can't help but feel bad for him still. The moment one's son or daughter refuses to be by your side, even as you near death, it's painful and it's a mercy have. Death I mean. Better that than living on with being king, and a daughter who hates you.

@@JosephAdams97 Honestly, even considering his nature he would have had everything he wanted if he just let Griffith go which makes it so much worse. His refusal of an arranged marriage for Charlotte, despite continuing the 100 year war, would have eventually bore fruit with the band of the hawk. It would have kept Charlotte. And he would have been rid of his throne. Instead, he assaults her, lies to her face, and to her assumption, kills all of the hawks, not just Griffith. The fact is he had so many outs, but decided to keep being a horffic pos.

It’s really masterful just how much stock Miura puts into the king of midland as one of his world’s very rare benevolent rulers. By the time he shows up in the story we’ve (probably) already read the Black Swordsman arc, where seemingly everyone in power has been literally corrupted by their own desires. But Miura still manages to sell the king of midland as the Big Good throughout the Golden Age, enough for the reader to presume that even with the apocalyptic world to follow shown during Black Swordsman, at least this king is one that will remain human. Well, he does indeed remain human, that’s for sure.

8:15 One of my favorite pages in Berserk is the juxtaposition of Griffith and Guts are and once a true appreciation of their friendship. Guts is outside, away from the peerage and his friends is completely alone and ready to leave but he looks inside and is happy for Griffith with another step towards his dream. Griffith is the most popular guy in the party and surrounded by a crowd and covered in decadence and glory; but he looked for Guts who's standing outside like the rest of the room doesn't matter to him. Just two brethren sharing a moment of glory together, a genuine sense of happiness and glee in their accomplishments.

YES. NEW VIDEO! A bit late for a Halloween special but I must say the King is interesting. He is solely responsible for Griffith's downfall, Guts' reunion to the former band of the hawk, as well as completely traumatizing his daughter and the eclipse itself by that extent. The 97 anime doesn't let us see the dark side of the King however, the Golden Age Trilogy does give us the one scene that was definitely needed which was absent in the anime. It's all kinds of messed up but what makes it tragic is that by the end of his life he realizes not letting Griffith be King was perhaps a mistake. Yet I cannot bring myself to like him after what he attempted through sheer madness. Then there's the fact he didn't even realize that his second wife cheated on him for his brother, a sign early on that his focus was not solely on his wife and kingdom. It's subtle foreshadowing of where his interests lie, especially since he doesn't have a son or any other additional children. The man's made good and at times questionable choices, but in the end of it all he did so for his daughter. Which brings a parallel to the Slug Count from Black Swordsman that I'm surprised you didn't bring up. Both have daughters that greatly resemble their past wife, both have had a partner that cheated on them for someone else, both were driven mad by betrayal which lead to different actions and outcomes. The Count sacrificed his wife to become an apostle and The King sacrificed the future of his kingdom in pursuit of his daughter's "warmth". Because even when wearing a crown, he is still but a man in the world of Berserk, far from perfect but further from sane driven by the madness of his loss. Solid video Shane, glad to see you upload again.

I don't think its at all appropriate to assume the King not marrying of Charlotte resulted in the continuation of the war. Its been shown the 100 years war has been a defensive war for Midland vs an invading force that captured doldrey and used it as a staging ground to steal territory and invade. The war was one because the enemies of midland had become exhausted and lost their main anchor within midland. Its a kind of weird thing to say, as if there isn't enough to pile on the character of the king of midland

Great video. To add, I can't help but think that even if Gut's stayed, Griffith's dream would have failed anyway because of this King. He, as you pointed out would've done ANYTHING for her. Imagine if Griffith didn't have intercourse, the peace lasted, and at some point the Princess might make more obvious attempts to formally court Griffith with no other true suitable courters available and the King closer to his deathbed considering the time; I can imagine the King - being irrational - commit suicide with Charlotte ending Griffith's dream and we all know that that may ends. In fact, I think this would be a good hypothetical discussion point.

Not to be the 🤓, but if Charlotte is only 16 or so and the war lasted for a 100 years, then his desire of having her couldn't be the reason for the whole war. At most it only prolonged the war by 15 years which is like a tenth of the time.

Great vid man. I just want to say that I do not fully agree. I do not believe that the gambit worked as much as I think that very few nobles in the council had the information that the king had, it was not a gambit, he just sold it that way. As his wife said, he was a great king... Christ... I digress, I think that the king knew about the band of the hawk, about its members and the history of those members, probably a lot more than he was willing to show or share. That is why he sent Griffith as the governor of Doldrey was Gannon. That's the only reason they won in the first place, Gannon got horny, didn't want anyone to harm Griffith. Even if they lost, sure you lost an elite regiment, but your main force is still there. It was objectively the best move.

11:00 You are exagerating... the King of Midland isn't over 100 years old, and Princess Charlotte is only 17 years old. So at most, he could have ended the war like 3 years ago, or 14 years ago by making pre-emptive fiançailles promises (the time to check that she won't die as a young child), not "a long time ago" as you've claimed. But even then, this would NOT have been the end of the war, merely reporting the problem. Who would have married her ? The Emperor of Chuder, or one of his Princes ? The Hundred Years War between France and England started exactly like this, by allowing the King of England to marry a French Princess, Isabelle, daughter of Philippe IV the Fair, who gave birth to a smart and ambitious Prince who desired the extention of his Kingdom by inheriting his grand-father's. We don't know how the 100 years war in Berserk started, maybe this was the same scenario. In my opinion, this disgusting desire was only lurking in the King's mind. It is born of the experience of a normal father who was in a love mariage : with time, he sees his daughter metamorphosing into his wife, this is the theme of the insect like metamorphosis talked about in Genji Monogatari, as well as in the Symposium of Platon by Diotima, albeit in different terms, for she speaks of the Genus as a tree, the genealogical tree, of which each person is merely a branch or budd, and she claims that this is the highest mystery of immortality: motherhood. Therefore, Griffith took this feeling which was in the old man's mind, and twisted it; Griffith cursed the King of Midland, and it had the effects we've seen : moral corruption, and its reflection on the body as a great degrading effect. Without Griffith influencing him and dragging him into the darkness (which Griffith did out of pride, instead of trying to make amends... like, seriously, if you made a move on a woman and got caught by her furious parents, would you taunt them, or would you ask them to accept that you love each other?), he would not have done it. For example, there are many wahmen who fantasize on kangaroos in Australia, but how many will actually to be mounted by one of them ?

The most important part about what the King of Midland does for the narrative (which I'm shocked to not see you nor anyone mention) is that the relationship between him and Charlotte is a foil for Guts' relationship with Casca after the eclipse. Both have a deep seeded hatred with Griffith for defiling their beloveds and have made unsound decisions just to spite him at the expense of their relationships. Where Charlotte's sorta rape elicited a vile awakening in the King, Casca's rape mirror's another part in the King's story: the death of his wife and the leaving behind of only the visage of who he deeply loved. Charlotte is that visage just as the infantalized Casca is after the eclipse. Guts' vile tempting would occur later during and surrounding that dream sequence with the Berserker wolf gnawing at the sleeping Casca's breast just as the King dared to gnaw at the sleeping Charlotte's breast. Luckily, Guts' virtue won out in the end and was able to allow himself and Casca to grow while the King decayed in his wretchedness and Charlotte became very stunted and traumatized.

I honestly agree you that the King of Midland is probably my least favorite Berserk character. It honestly goes to show how nobody who has unchecked power can truly be a good person. The idea of a benevolent dictator might appear attractive, and they might buy you with their charisma. But in the end, they are scum who can indulge their darkest desires because they have the power to do whatever they want. I definitely think Berserk is a subversion of the idea in most fantasy that if you hand absolute power to the right person, everything will go well. When in reality, absolute power draws in corrupt people, and brings out the darkest parts of them.

So how do you feel about guts being worse than the king
@Reed5016
@Reed5016 4 ай бұрын
@@sky-oq5mr In what way? Are you referring to the part where he has a psychotic episode and r*pes Casca? It’s clear that he was being possessed by the beast of darkness, and he wasn’t fully conscious. In real life, there’s a reason people who have psychosis are charged with significantly lesser punishments for their crimes. Now of course, I’m not defending what Guts did. It was definitely fucked up. But I’m saying, what he did in that situation wasn’t as bad as what the king did. And to make the king even worse, he r*ped someone who’s not only a child but his own child. So that’s r*pe, p*dophilia, and incest. I’d say that’s significantly worse than anything guts has done. Now if you’re talking about his killing, I’d argue that killing people is less morally heinous than r*pe. You might find yourself in a situation where you need to kill someone. But you’ll never need to r*pe someone.

@@Reed5016 That's some backwards logic. Killing someone, they can't come back from that. He didn't need to kill that little boy, he was no threat to him at all. Whose to say the king wasn't going through the samething? Guts wasn't possessed, his thoughts were getting the better of him. He just wanted Casca to himself like before. The king seen his daughter as his wife he lost. Psychosis is a cop out, if it were your family murdered or raped by someone that claimed that your want justice so don't try it. Back in those days and even in the Bible, incest is not a crime. Even if you check our genetics, every last one of us regardless of nationality have cousin related blood, further proving the Adam and Eve situation. Guts is a mass murderer, rapist, and a monster. You guys pick and choose whose the bad guy in these scenarios just because one guy looks cooler than the other. The king ended a war he never started and guts triggered one of the worst things to ever happen to humanity. There is an enormous difference. King is wrong for trying to tape someone but as you've seen, she's come back from that. All the things guys did? That little boy ain't coming back from that. He's gone, even Griffith wouldn't have killed a child. It was the first thing that messed with his mind anyways, witnessing a child die. Lastly, pedophilia is not 17, even in modern America that isn't pedophilia. 16 is the US consent age as well as many other countries. Don't have have to like it but that's the truth, back then, girls and boys got married at 14 because they didn't live as long as they do today. 30s was old age for them. Just food for thought

I don't really think that's what's being aimed at with the king. I think it's more of an issue of having people in power who don't want or can't take responsibility. In essence, he's the complete antithesis to Griffith. Griffith has an unyielding desire for power and leadership and harbors the traits of a leader, BUT he's of common birth and thus basically barred from that dream from the start. The king on the other hand is overburdened with that responsibility, has much lower ambitions (love or being loved I assume) and isn't suited for leadership, BUT he's born into high nobility and thus cannot leave his post. Moreover Griffith commits heinous deeds for his own cause, while the king uses his own cause for heinous deeds. I don't think the king developed distorted desires, because he was drunk with power or knew he could fulfill them through that power, but much rather that he felt locked into his post and couldn't follow his desires. He loved his first wife, but there was no way he could find love again, because as a king his marriages had to be politically motivated. That's why he got obsessed with Charlotte, because she was the only remnant of the only love he had ever known, and that love got distorted.

Out of all the horrifying shit in Berserk, absolutely nothing could have compared to, nor prepared me for, the shocking plot twist that a 40-60 year old man has a receding hairline. But seriously though, the amount of absolutely awful parental figures in Berserk is pretty messed up, and makes me genuinely worried about what might have happened in Miura's childhood.

11:05 he didn’t put them through all 100 years though right? The king must have inherited the conflict and if a war lasts 100 years most citizens weren’t alive when it began. I’m just making a point on the timeline that he can’t be blamed for all 100 years. I’m deffo not defending the king, I get your point that he could have made a marriage alliance to make it stop sooner, but also his daughter is only 17. Setting up a child for marriage was not uncommon in medieval times, but getting Charlotte a political alliance would have would knocked off what? Maybe 5-10 years of the war?
