I've had "Cemetery Boys" on my shelf for ages but haven't gotten to it yet. I'm hoping to read it sometime this year. "Kindred" made my Favorites list as well for 2022 - thought it was amazing! Was happy to see "House in the Cerulean Sea" included here. I haven't read it yet but I found a copy in a Little Free Library - along with "Night of the Living Rez"- so I brought them home and I'm excited to read them both! "Don't Cry for Me" was incredible! I loved that book and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel! I knew, at some point, Toni Morrison would be mentioned but I couldn't guess which book. "Beloved" wrecked me - outstanding book but so tragic. I'm currently reading my fourth Morrison novel ("Sula") and, apparently, most - if not all - of her books are filled with trauma in some form. Her writing is so beautiful though I keep coming back for more. Great "Best Books" list(s), guys! Was fun to watch!!!

Demon Copperhead was my #1 of the year, too. What a great book. I own a lot of the books you mentioned and need to move them up on my TBR (I have Love and Saffron but am saving it for February when I am teaching in the doldrums of the school year!)

Wait. Hold up. You guys went to Italy?! 😂 One book that was among my favorites this year was Train Dreams, which probably would never have blipped my radar were it not for you, Greg. And I'm pretty sure you are responsible for all of Booktube discovering Night of the Living Rez, another gem. But. Italy. You sure kept that under your bonnets! 💚🤍❤

Wow! There was certainly loads of meat on that video this week. So much much for keeping my reading numbers down this year! Upon reflection, I must have listed well over 20, must read books. Thanks must go to you both for compiling such a list that would not be out of place in any national “best of/must read” lists for 2022. Not only have you given me food for thought but I shall include at least six of the books for our book club’s February reads. I know that each video takes an enormous amount of time and effort to put together and broadcast, so, my hat is doffed in recognition of your efforts for 2022. Long may they continue.

You both had great lists! I tend to agree with Joel about rating his books based on how they made him feel. A book can be well written and stand out among other books, but if it didn't make me feel anything then it's hard to truly consider it a favorite. I'm putting some of your choices on my TBR for 2023.

Anyway, just wanted to say great video. I loved both of your lists. You can both consider yourselves influencers because I certainly pick up books based on both your recommendations. Joel, the audio of Now in November is on Scribd. I’ve got it saved. Sharing my top 15 below. The Stranding - Kate Sawyer The Trees - Percival Everett Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier Nightcrawling - Leila Mottley Don’t Cry For Me - Daniel Black Elena Knows - Claudia Pineiro Cold Earth - Sarah Moss Foster - Claire Keegan The Twyford Code - Janice Hallett The Colony - Audrey Magee The Last Resort - Jan Carson Dear Little Corpses - Nicola Upson Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield Razorblade Tears - S A Cosby Lean Stand Fall - John McGregor

I read Rubyfruit Jungle this year and it made my top reads. I think I looked for it at the library because it's on Britta's 1001 list. I didn't know about that link with Frannie Flagg! How interesting. Demon Copperhead also made my top reads. I've started listening to David Copperfield on audiobook to go back and compare, it's a really interesting exercise.

Great list(s). I tended to lean towards cosy reading this year, maybe because I've been dealing with chronic illness in the past 6 months and I wanted to be immersed in engaging stories. I couldn't decide which order my first two should be in either, so I put Tenderness by Alison MacLeod and Demon Copperhead as my equal firsts. Then The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell and The Magician by Colm Toibin. I feel like they are very conservative books which is unlike me, but 2022 what can I say.

Fantastic video guys thanks for sharing! Joel, in terms of Dust Bowl stories if you haven’t already discovered it, look into the YA book Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. It was the 1998 Newbery winner and is a novel told in verse, one of the first to really break out in that genre. The audiobook is just over 2 hours. It has one of the most brutal scenes I’ve ever read in any book, for young people or adults (no, it’s not animal related), but emotionally devastating.
