About 10 yrs. ago, before the mandated reduction in copper content, I bought a set of Wagner ceramic front pads from Amazon. They were on sale, of course. Also bought rotors. Don't remember the brand but they were inexpensive, too (?Bendix). Installed them as Brembo replacements on my LS400. Since then they have functioned very well. There is still a lot of pad left and my rotors have not warped. Critical to the rotors' condition is that I'm very careful to torque lug nuts correctly and to factory specs.

I've replaced many brakes over the decades and this is a good review. I prefer ceramic and I buy them on line. I have always liked brakes made by Raybestos, that is just my personal preference.

I would consider the vehicle weight and size of rotor too. Modern cars definitely tend to have larger rotors than twenty year old models. I'm driving a 2002 Trailblazer and I have reason to believe it now has ceramic pads ( they are super quiet and smooth) , but they just don't have enough bite and are a bit slow in reacting to the point that I a bit concerned about pulling a 3000 pound trailer without trailer brakes ( actually the legal limit here) anyway I think the semi metallic ones will be a better fit for the Trailblazer. Now my 1993 Mazda Protege lx the ceramic pads were nice and absolutely no problem. Either way I will be also replacing rotors with new pads it just works so much better for something as important as the brakes.

good video, these are all common sense approaches for the DIYers, Just do your research, your objective is to have them last as long as you can, going cheap only creates problems sooner for you.

Thank you for the great explanation. I was running high and ceramic brake pads, however, I was still experiencing warping of the rotors. I took care of that problem by switching over to semi metallic for my application.. I haven’t had a problem since. Semi metallic can be noisier however, it avoids warping.

Is it standard to replace rotors when you change your brakes? I've always paid to have someone change my brakes for me, but think I'm going to try it myself this time. 2014 Toyota Tundra. If I don't see or feel any real wear on my rotors, is it safe to replace the pads and continue to use the same rotors? Do I need to check rotor thickness?

How do you tell if you are getting a higher quality brake pad. Some brands are inherently more expensive and not necessarily higher quality. I can see if within a brand there are different price points for same application but switching brands price isn’t always an indicator of quality

I've always used and suggested semi metallic. Just my opinion but they always seem to be the best of all worlds. Unless you have a performance vehicle ceramics never give a confident brake feel. Just my 2 cents.

I think it’s one of those things you like what you are familiar with. I started in ceramic and feel nothing wrong with it, but since you started with semi metalic, you probably are familiar with the high stopping power of semi metallic compared to ceramic

If you do not mind more dust on wheels, semi metallic is the best to go. I have tried all kinds of pads, but for the braking performance only, the semi metallic has shown best feel and power. My cars = 2003 and 2006 Lexus GS 430s. 130k miles and 300k miles, respectably. They hve all semi metallic pads. Yes, after just one week driving, all wheels become to be black. I do not worry, just wash the cars. Lifetime = (2006 GS430) front pad, 35k miles, rear pad, 20k miles. Yes, very short, but I do not mind. I just spend more money, only to get performance. GS430 with semi metallic and Camry (or Accord) with ceramic? No, no, no way. Totally a whole new world!

Hi...in a FWD car..why does the front brake pads wear down faster than the rear brake pads??
@05DonnieB
@05DonnieB 2 ай бұрын
The front breaks do more of the work which is why they tend to be larger. The drive train of the car doesn't make much difference its just physics. Try riding a bike and only use the rear wheel brake to stop... good luck

Not all ceramic pads are created equal, like you said. I only use Akebono pads on all my vehicles. Take my Mercedes for example, I installed Akebono Euro since the first day I bought it brand new. After 70K miles, no rotor wear, the pads still have 40% left. Plus my wheels look clean after months.

*Take down my metalic pads about 1/8" and then apply my own carbonfiber glazing.* NOTHING stops better, and lasts longer. Plus...when they finally destroy the carbon fiber, it makes a distinctive screetching noise as the remaining CF gets consumed between the metal rotor and the underlying metalic pad material. Thus telling me to reapply. #SaveMoneyStoppingBetter

it would probably make a good video to talk about brake pad, friction pad thickness and matching calipers; I just bought some BENDIX pads for my 2001 dodge ram van...it carries KELSEY HAYES calipers...unfortunately they seem to be too thick for the calipers and the wheel locks, when they are installed......though the pistons are all the way into the caliper......

Go to parts store and pay the mark up for pads if they are a LIFETIME WARRANTY so you only pay once😊
@krimson122
@krimson122 Ай бұрын
You can also go online to a reputable supplier and that has lifetime replacement warranty on the parts they sell. If you wrench your own car and tend to keep it for a long time, it's worth seeking out such a store. An example for European cars, online stores like FCP have lifetime replacement on almost ALL the parts they sell. Engine oil/filters, brake pads, rotors, starters, air filters, spark plugs and just about anything that isn't consumable (gas additives, washer fluid, etc). Just buy the same parts again and RMA the used parts back to them and get a full refund. I've gone thru 4 sets of front track pads/rotors so far ($900 for the set) and used a large USPS flat rate box (currently $25) each time for the used part return. I don't send back engine oil anymore just because postage has gone up so much, it's barely worth it.

You got your info a little twisted up on ceramic versus semi metallic. Ceramic will wear out your rotors faster because it's a harder material. Think this through people. Before replying. Harder abrasive wear pad....or softer abrasive pad. Which wears the rotors quicker. I don't care what your brother that's a mechanic says.
