Truck steel beds are vented so they can drain water from them. My GMC has the vents along the front of the bed. The tail gate also doesn't seal out dust. The tail gate is where most of the dust comes from. While moving, the rear of your truck creates a vacuum that draws dirt onto the rear of your truck. I have a fiberglass shell on my truck. The company that sold me the shell offers a peel and stick rubber gasket for the tailgate. The front of my bed I just uses a peel and stick rubberized gasket they use to set window frames in RVs. You can buy it by the roll. You can have a friend use a flash light at night on the outside of your truck while your in the bed and spot all the unsealed areas that are letting in the dust. Thanks for a very informative video. Good luck :)

I have a 1/2 ton RAM with a 8 foot bed. I bought my Project M because it was light enough for a 1/2. I think Mule, who was my dealer, hadn't installed a Full Size on a 1/2 ton very often. They had done Medium size on a Tacoma. Believe me the Full Size on the 8 foot bed is the cat's meow.

I'm just not one for truck campers except the Scout Kenai. Which I saw your video for and thank you for that! I just took a gamble watching this but this Project M looks very promising. There are so many ways to work with all that space. Glad you you made it through those storms! Your alterations are DEFINITELY something they should consider! Thank you KIMO365!!

Warning: This is a long comment. A Detailed review for sure, but you made some errors about several things, 2 simple ones are: 1) the motor home was a Class C. Class Bare based on what starts out as a van, not a cab & chassis. 2) slide in campers will almost always keep the tailgate in the truck unless the Camper itself has a specialized step,& or the rear tail lights etc incorporated into the back of the camper. The information on the Project M is spot on as far as I can tell. Nice review for sure! I love seeing the comments saying this is not a budget item, and in away, I understand, but compare it to a slide in model,,,,,,,. Comparing it to a fibreglass topper is a bit off the mark as well. This is built very differently, has full insulation in the walls (you can get insulation for the fabric portion as well). It is heavier than a regular topper, but the room and king size bed is wort the difference. The power unit in here is fantastically expensive mind you. You can build your own battery box for about 1/2 the cost with double the AH in the battery or more! You pick and chose your accessories. I am buying one as I like the design and how light this is. It’s mounting directly to the box will be so much more stable. I have designed a 30” bed plan on the passenger side, it is in 2 pieces and insulated to the outside. The compartments are all drawers. The refrigerator will be attached on the top slide and there will be 2 more slides on it, the middle for the stove, the outer one is for the sink system. The bed is overtop with the top plywood being a lid for interior access to the refrigerator. The half towards the front will just be bed and drawers. The drivers side will just be shelving that fits under the ledge that’s part of the camper. It will be going into a 2022 F150 Lariat SuperCab with 2.0 KW ProPower Onboard and the power tailgate. The shelves will be on top of the 2 pieces of plywood flooring with insulation underneath. There will also be 150 watt solar on the unit (it’s so much cheaper to do it yourself) going through a 30 amp Charge Controller with Bluetooth and the battery will be a 240 ah LiFePo4 “lithium” battery. This will power the camper accessories like the fans, all attached lighting, and any extra 12 volt accessories. The refrigerator will be plugged into the truck’s 110 outlet with the ProPower on so even if it sits for most of the day, it has guaranteed power. The solar and battery would be just enough to guarantee this as well, but better to have redundancies than only just enough. I originally ordered an F150 without the power tailgate, but watched a review that addressed the ways to get in and out and closing up or opening the camper. I don’t want to climb over that tailgate all the time. I’m older, retired and have a terrible back. I can afford it so why not? The reason for this camper is it’s lightweight, I go into some pretty sketchy trails to get to some pretty decent fishing locations so I don’t worry as much about being top heavy, and I can get under more trees without having to take out the pole saw. (I predominantly fish/camp on private land so the option of trimming the trees is acceptable/legal). Everything will be built out of oak and maple veneered plywood with 2 tones of stain. All edging will be finished with 38 inch deep wood strips and not iron on edging. The strips of wood will stand up so much better. I’m pretty excited. I have taken all the dimensions I need from a 21 F150 on my buddy’s lot at his dealership. The wood I already had, I’m waiting on the hardware, battery and solar panel and I’m good! I already have a Dometic refrigerator to fit the build. All in I will spend very near the cost of a standard camper without a pop up. No where near the cost of a Four Wheel slide in pop up camper. I guess it’s a budget unit. The thing is, I will be near $100,000 CAD vs over $200,000 for a Sprinter van 4x4 conversion like is done by Winnebago. It’s a budget build only missing a tiny cramped toilet/shower on the interior. I will have the Instant hot shower on the rails on the outside of the camper on the drivers side, and an awning on the passenger side. I will have 1 gas can and 2 or 3 water cans mounted on the outside. Haven’t decided quite yet. So much you can do to fully personalize these units!!

Hello - I love your comments - you sounded you you have a good plan - how did it work out as I see this post is 2 years old
@shitloveaduck
@shitloveaduck Күн бұрын
@@michaelvanklaveren1099 - Thanks! There’s some irony here and a difference in ideals between husband & wife! Haha. I bought a new F150 SuperCab with the 3.5 litre EcoBoost and then you could still get Pro Power Onboard with the 2.0 kw (2000watts) of power. My wife,,,, had me go with her and we bought a Mercedes Sprinter conversion van by Thor Industries. It’s a 4x4 version and she said I could use it whenever I wanted to go fishing, but if she was going to go camping she didn’t want to go in “some half *ssed truck camper”. Kinda hurt my plans and feeling a bit maybe, haha, but it’s a very nice way to get out and the van is surprisingly capable off-road. I did buy the Project M and sold the truck & camper to a friend of mine and he did a similar conversion, but he was an aircraft engineer before retiring so he had access to a lot of aluminum and knows how to work with it very well. He designed a set up similar to what I had planned but at about 1/2 the weight. His wife loves it!! They could afford a van like ours as well, but she likes “roughing it” haha. The Pro Power Onboard is a game changer for convenience as it takes up no space in the camper and it’s very capable and allows you to use all 2000 watts. They have an aluminum fold out shower & bathroom. Both are identical, but the shower allows there to be a hand held shower in it. They set it right beside the camper and installed an outside shower on the Project M. You can see the faucet through a Lexan panel and just reach through a curtain like thing to adjust the temperature as well as turn the shower on & off. They have about 30,000 km on the van (20,000 mils ish). They have been to Alaska & back. Have scratches on the hood from about an 8 foot bear that was curious. The dash cam activated. The bear had his front paws on the hood and the claws did their thing. They clear coated the scratches in as a memory of the trip. Haha. Neither were scared. They love the topper/camper. He is often in there tinkering, or “perfecting” it as he says. It has been off-road in some challenging places. The truck has been lifted 3” and he said he never would have considered that if it was a true slide in camper. They are thinking of ordering one for a Ram 6.4 ft box truck as he thinks the Dutch tailgate would be much nicer to use. The new Ford tailgate should be similar, but he doesn’t like the fact that only part of the tailgate opens as a swing out vs the Ram leaving you able to swing the whole tailgate open. He wants to do a new interior with a honeycomb aluminum floor that he can just slide right out with forklift tongs on his tractor. It would be quick to take down and lift the canopy when he wants to use the truck box otherwise. I like that idea as well. As it is, the interior is 6 modular pieces and can be taken apart and removed in about 40 minutes with 2 people. Then the canopy can come off. He also wants the air suspension of the Ram 1500. Take care,Eh!

Damn I like the idea of these! This is made for camping and working with a truck. Mountains, desert, everything in between! Gotta get one for a F150 Lightning! I've been happy with my ARE topper, but this would be so much nicer. And with a Lightning and Jackery or 2, would not need the AGM battery sticking up and costing a lot. Also great to hear no leaks in Tetons storm.

I have a bed rug in my Tundra with an ARE cap. I’ve had it since I bought the truck. I love it. I haul bags of chip, chain saws, gas cans, dogs, tools everything then just take it to the car wash to vacuum. If it gets really dirty I just pressure wash it out at the car wash with a wand and some soap, rinse then just park it on a hill in my yard, block it and let it drain. You would LOVE a bed rug in there. It will give your camper a whole new look and feel. Awesome upgrade.

About the tailgate drop…the Lariats and above come with a “special” hinge and gas shock that’s installed behind the passenger taillight. If you drive a XL or XLT, based on the vin, dealer will claim unavailable, I gave them a lariat vin from their own lot and ta-da, available. Took all of 10 min to install all under 70$ ( hinge and strut) . Do it- you’ll love it.

That's what I like about this setup. You can use your truck as a truck most days of the year and go camping when you want. And I was thinking something like a foam rubber strip running around the top of the bed before the install would have made a good air seal. It may have prevented some of that dust.
@ForestToFarm
@ForestToFarm Жыл бұрын
We have a bed cover on an F150. It seals with rubber. The seal does a great job however the tailgate has air gaps all the way around and lets lots if dust in as well as the ability for bugs to come and go. I assume his issues with dust are similar to ours. Terry

I am close to your age. My thought was how hard is it to get into the camper over a tail gate then how do you get into the bed? In my younger days I had a six pack overhead camper and it was a bit dangerous on my rickity ladder to get up in that bed and a pain if you had to get up in the middle of the night. And if you are going to get one, order it now because it takes forever to get one. I am getting a high shell and making my bed on the floor to access easily.. I dont need to stand up.

Great review & walkthrough. Very thorough. I think this is what I am looking for. I see they make them in an 8' bed size, yeah! I am selling my pull behind camper & a slide in camper, too much fuss factor with water lines & such. I find myself using water out of a can & sleeping bag, so why have all this extra stuff? I want to set up my camper for my needs & make it more modular. Take the things I need for a given trip & leave home things not needed. My friends think I'm nuts, but minimal is the way to go.
@Pwilli-hs6yi
@Pwilli-hs6yi 2 жыл бұрын
After seven years with a campervan, I totally agree with you. I built it myself and changed the interior design EVERY year trying to make it perfect for lots of different uses. Now I have made it " modular" I can empty the entire floor area in less than 10 minutes. Or just have a few things, depending on needs. It's the future. You are on the right track, not nuts at all. ( as a bonus, if the van breaks or gets trashed, I can transfer my modules to another van in no time at all.)

After seeing these in person, the quality and build is very subpar. Look at your shelves, they are warping , the hardware is Home Depot and the use of self tapping fasteners is everywhere.This is the kiss of death once you drive washboards and looks like typical cheap assembly like every other RV you get from Indiana. The black tread plate is the thinnest aluminum tread plate I've seen, more of an appearance of armor than actual armor. The 60" bed is awesome but I cannot justify the cost for such poor design that I know will not last offroad.

Watched again. Always give me more positive ideas what I need to do for a single guy This way I could pull a boat or side by side unit My question Do you have any additional ideas you have installed or know of others that have made the M into more useable space to sleep or live in? Maybe a diesel or type heater? A hot water heater for showering? Like they put in vans I like the idea of simple I don’t need or want a full rv like many other models. I think this would be a great project too items as I go I like the pop up part and insulation sides Definitely don’t need all those windows. Can a thicker memory foam mattress be installed with the fold down feature? My truck is a 2008 Chev Duramax with a 40 gallon aux fuel tank installed at front of box This is needed as 2008 OEM was only 26 gallons Think I could build around it and make it useful as a platform but still get access to full tank and tool box This a great video. Thanks

Very nice presentation!! Really liked it when you showed the interior room with and without the top/roof up and down!! Nice touch. Excellent review and nice commentary both pro's and cons. I like the way you think. What's the cost, out of the door?? Thanks for sharing.... best wishes.... Ax

8:49 😂 my man has moves. Thanks for the great review. Definitely made me want to run out and grab one. Did almost everything you showed come with it? For example, the four L.E.D strips on the inside roof. And maybe I missed it, but I don't think you mentioned the price. Once again, thanks for the info...

Gas struts my friend. Hydraulic struts usually have a separate hydraulically fed system which needs to be serviced from time to time and is generally used for heavier applications because they are air over hydraulic.

That Sunseeker is a Class C. Class B’s are more like the Sprinter vans and are usually smaller. I had a Class C that was 28 feet long on a 70/80’s Van chassis.
