Which is why I really like my vintage (mostly 1970's era) receiver collection. When I could buy them locally, in excellent condition, and typically in the range of $100-200...this was a fantastic deal. At my desk I have two [(Yamaha CR420 (1975) and a Nakamichi SR-2E (1985)] that power my bookshelf speakers or headphone/cabled IEMs. For the music source, I am using my PC and converting to analog via FiiO BTA30Pro ($125) in DAC mode. The Nakamichi SR-2E uses a Nelson Pass designed amp. Fantastic...the unit is fully operational (recapped) and cost me $110. PLENTY of power for my use case.

Over forty years of buying hifi, I've come to the conclusion that two pieces of equipment have transformed my listening experience (mostly analogue - RECORDS, DAMMIT). They are (1) a vacuum record cleaning machine, and (2) the Schiit Lokius. They provide binge-listening heaven.

Bought one a couple of months back, got it running through my tape loop on my amp, so can easily switch it in and out and get instant comparison of its effect. It's superbly subtle and well made. I use it mainly when listening to digital sources and the mix is a bit hot and want to tame the treble down a bit. Also when listening at lower volume you can tweak it to give the music a little more presence. Well worth the money.

I LOVE my lokius for 2 reasons: 1. It serves as a input selector switch. I bought both the lokius and the bifrost 2 together (same footprint, so stacks nicely). I feed the bifrost into the lokius via balanced cable and my phono preamp via RCA and the output is just RCA to my integrated. So now the switch at the front of the lokius can select between my turntable and dac. Pretty cool I think, especially if you have an old amp with maybe just one Aux input. 2. The bypass switch is great! Depending on if I'm listening to vinyl or digital, good recording or not so good; I may or may not need EQ. What's great about the lokius is with a flick of a switch I can apply a smiley face if needed ;)

I have the Loki. It is now the most precious element in my system. Corrects biases in speakers, amps, and most importantly, source recordings. 60s were treble harsh; 70s muffled, 80s lacked mids, 90s, 2000s had boomy bass. Amps and speakers are factory set to reflect the designer’s choices. The eq. serves as the “balancing” act.

Yep. You talked me into it. I bought a Lokius. Thank you Schiit for finally making what forever has needed to be made. Wasn’t hard. But since YOU brought up Hi-Fi as seen in movies, let me continue: “Unfaithfully Yours”, a 1948 Preston Sturges movie starring Rex Harrison as a symphony orchestra conductor wherein he uses a “high fidelity” disc recorder for some hi-jinks. In 1960’s “High Times” Fabian brings into his new college dorm room he shares with Bing Crosby (!) an awesome hi-fi system. And who can forget the rack of Adcom Doogy Houser had in his bedroom. Martin-Logan electrostatic Monoliths dominated Dan Hedaya’s home in “First Wives Club”. Quick! Look! And see Martin-Logan Aerius ’stats being carried out of the dorm at the beginning of the Breckin Meyer/Seann William Scott cinema classic “Road Trip”. And of course, Joey and Chandler too sported a pair of M-L Aerius for years in their apartment on “Friends” but never turned the darn things on. Did I miss anything?

Thank you sir. Appreciate the Schiit LOVE! I have a Bifrost 2 and I run the balanced end to my Jotunheim 2 and single ended to my Valhalla 2. Although I use Roon for playback, I prefer to EQ my headphones with the Lokius because applying EQ in Roon prevents me from getting bit perfect playback. Takes a minute to adjust settings and the quick bypass makes it easy. Well done.

I think getting the Schitt equalizer device or something of its sort would be worth many times its modest price in the fun education it would provide concerning frequencies and how just a little boost or cut here and there can mean the difference between instrument timbres sounding truly genuine or not. Between your bass sounding generous or not. Midrange and highs too. Hearing just what frequencies are involved and their effect on the sound. You also will learn a lot about your room and equipment's deficiencies and where they lie. Hard core Audiophiles like their signal path to be as short and simple as possible. Putting something extra in the chain and its possible subtracting from the sound quality has to be weighed against what it does for the sound quality in a positive way. No way of guessing. A trial is needed. An extra device like this (and the extra interconnect needed) decreases transparency. If you have a great extra set of audiophile interconnects the degree that the transparency is lessened might be minimal and certainly less than someone using cables that are an afterthought. In fact a lessening of transparency in this case might be more due to the extra set of cables needed. I think that this would undoubtedly be just the thing a lot of people need to fine tune their system. Especially people with an extra set of great cables. Or maybe even the other people. Buying something that really makes your sound click and come together tonally, is a really good idea, if this is what it will do it for your system. As far as reel to reel equipment, how many uninformed people out there think that their turntable or CD players sound 1/3 as good as a great real to reel deck? One of the 2 major U.S. Audiophile magazines did a listening test between a reel tape of The Beatles Sgt. Peppers vs.the expensive Mobile Fidelity UHQR LP. All members of the listening panel agreed that the reel deck trounced it for sound. The turntable used was an edge of the art over $100,000 Walker Proscenium. Think you got got a turntable that sounds 1/3 that good? If you do it still loses. Do the math.

Being from the 80’s I love EQ’s. I also love the spectrum analyzer display to get those lines jumping up and down. Something about the display was pure visual magic to me. My hell-stomper Kenwood rack system from 30 years ago had it with a vengeance that only me & the Ghost Rider could truly appreciate back then. My gods that thing was powerful…I miss it. I’m very happy that Schiit has made an EQ. I’d consider getting this particular EQ if it had that spectrum display, sadly it does not, so I’ll stick with my vintage Pioneer EQ from the early 80’s with that awesome spectrum display, but that’s just me… Great video Randy!

And I just offed the 2 units I recently bought that Unit (A) has a defunct site so no joy with its supposed Eq. Software and Unit (B) was oddly unable to do same though the site worked to a point, it too would not download the manual or Eq Software. So I'm off to Helm Onxy and eventually this unit for CD play back etc.

I didn’t think that another equalizer from the same cop would produce that much difference. Did I say wow! I too, enjoy the eq ‘curve’ of highs and lows. It’s helping my Gjallarhorn produce results I was thinking it may not have. It’s definitely helping my Q Acoustic 3050’s come alive, because I was almost going to make them the 3rd or 4th system speakers. Now, there back up front. So, this upgrade is the best upgrade I’ve made. Thanks randy!

Is there any way to connect something like this with an integrated amplifier? Everything I can find says I have run a kind of loop from the preamp output of my integrated amplifier to the input of the EQ and back into the preamp input of the amplifier. However, I don't have a preamp input and output on my integrated amplifier. And from what I can tell most integrated amplifiers in my price range don't have preamp input/output either. Plus, I don't want to buy another amplifier just to make use of this. Am I better off just buying a stereo receiver with a built-in EQ? My integrated amp does have an EQ, but it only has two bands. And they're just bass and treble. I want to control the midrange because my speakers are too scooped sounding.

Even if you have good components and speakers, every room is different and the room characteristics greatly affect the sound. EQ is useful to compensate for these room characteristics. Having only 6 fixed bands though does not provide a lot of control - I would prefer a parametric EQ where you can dial in the specific frequency, width (variable Q), and amount. Alternately, a graphic EQ with 16 (or preferrably 32) bands works (e.g., Behringer Ultragraph).
@drdelewded
@drdelewded 2 жыл бұрын
A graphic is better than a parametric for setting a room. Parametrics are great for surgical cut/boost.. though thats more for mixing than room, unless your room is really bad.. but then some treatment will serve better.

@@RennieAsh I dunno if I can use a mini DSP for my system as its a recording studio. The audio gets routed out my DAW directly to an interface. So a plugin like Sonarworks is my best bet for that. (In DAW I can put any number of EQs into the monitor output but without proper room analysis making my own monitoring more pleasant is actually a detriment, I need the mix of the audio to sound as to source as possible so itll translate as accurately as possible. Also why I use multiple sources of monitoring, and monitor emulation.
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh 2 жыл бұрын
@@drdelewded I guess the mini DSP would go between interface and monitors. It's great to use some sort of parametric EQ to help with bass resonance if your room is less than ideal. If your stuff translates already then I'm sure you'll be ok.

You'd love the fully analogue SPL Vitalizer Mk-2T, not an EQ, but even better, as it bends the sound psychoacoustically rather than change the frequency spectrum. Tube infusion to mids/highs, too, plus a really wide range for bass from supersoft (like roots reggae) to supertight (like EDM, etc.). Alas, at twice the price of the Lokius, it might just fall outside of your channel's target?

Hey Randy. A suggesttion. I think you could do a new video on diy about opamps. Opamp rolling is really simple in units that don't have them soldered. There are lots of them that allow for different sound profiles according to taste. I just bought a Douk Audio U3 mini headphone amp(which by itself and for the price is really very good - class A, portable, very powerful, easy to power, cheap, warmish sounding and allows for easy opamp swapping) and a Burson v5i opamp - that cost me almost the same as the amp - which i put in instead of the one it originally had. I don't have any experience with this sort of thing, but it's really simple to do and it only took me like 5 minutes including opening and closing the amp itself. The upgrade in sound quality is really overwhelming!!! Worth every penny! I just ordered a muses02 for my fx-audio dac-x6 mkii too.

Did the same thing here except moved the v5i to my d50s dac and put in a cheaper LME49720 in the u3. Still sounds great. Sometimes I prefer the sound of the u3 to the zen can. Better transient response.

It's interesting, maybe, that in UK in the 80s and 90s equalizers and tone controls were completely derided, almost laughed at in audiophile circles. The idea of amps trying to be just straight wore with gain was the only consideration. Hence the minimalist Naim, Meridian, musical fidelity, etc stuff. I think that view persists.

I miss the days of having EQs built in to amps, it sounded better than the Bass and Treble option then and now. So my new amp has no aux or tape Lupe how would I hook this up? Just run the component through it?

On a more serious note, I have a question. I have a older Denon AVR 5.1 that I use in a 2 channel system. I use a Emotiva Bluetooth Receiver with it so I can play my Spotify from my phone. I have noticed there is a volume difference between streaming vs playing a CD or even listening to the Radio. Would the EQ help boost Spotify to closer volume levels that I get with say my CD player? Thank you for any help or advice.

@@jim010109 it can but that’s sounds to be a level in balance with the BT device. Sometimes the volume in the device it’s being fed also can be raised from your phone etc.

@@jonathandavis9507 absolutely. I totally agree. And everyone's hearing, listening room, and equipment is different, so it makes sense imo to be able to alter the sound to your liking. Even though in the audiophile world equalizers are heavily frowned upon, like subwoofers

I'm torn between the 4-band and 6-band EQ from Schiit Audio. Since my system isn't too expensive I am not sure if I would hear the difference in my vinyl between the LOKI MINI+ or the LOKIUS. I like the idea of 6 but would I really hear the difference for $150 more. What would Randy buy? This is my system: Sony STRDH190 2-ch Home Stereo Receiver. Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speakers. Sony SACS9 10-Inch Active Subwoofer. Sony PS-LX310BT Turntable. I upgraded to an elliptical cartridge. It improved the sound but wasn't a huge improvement.
@daniannaci3258
@daniannaci3258 2 жыл бұрын
To hook up either of the Schiit eq’s, they need to be wired in between a separate preamp and power amp, or, into a tape monitor loop on an integrated amp or receiver. A tape monitor loop would feed whatever input you selected at a fixed line output into a tape deck while the monitor in would reproduce through the speakers whatever the tape deck was recording.
@daniannaci3258
@daniannaci3258 2 жыл бұрын
It was a handy place to place to wire in an eq. But your Sony receiver doesn’t seem to have such a loop, probably because tape decks are long out of style. Your only work around would be to use the line out option on your turntable and plug that directly into the EQ, than the output of the EQ into any empty line input (Not phono! That’s for a direct feed from the cartridge and the EQ would severely overload it.). You could connect a CD player, external DAC, etc. - anything with line level outputs, the same way. That’s a lot of plugging in and out cables so it’s clumsy at best..

I'm convinced this whole movement toward modern audiophile equipment not having tone controls is a ginormous scam. Trying to make people buy a bunch of expensive cables and stuff to reach a sound they could get with a simple turn of a bass or treble knob.

Your ear canal is a resonant port for frequencies around 3khz It's the size of your ear canal in relation to the wave length. Look it up dorks! It also coincides with the Fletcher Munson curves. 2khz to 4khz is much more fatiguing than any frequencies above 8khz. Heck, even ambulance sirens target 2khz to 4khz for maximum annoyance and to get your attention. The More You Know 🌠

It's actually pronounced "shi tuh" or so I am told. I was pretty much sold on getting the loki. I wanted the lokius but didn't want to drop 300 bucks on one. Black Friday rolled around and Schiit had bstock for 229. I bought the thing. Full factory warranty. No returns unless defective though. They still have em. I love EQ's. They can make a bad speaker sound better and a good speaker sound great. People say that playing flat is what the artist wanted.... Why do so may pressings sound different?

EQ's are fantastic. People just need to learn to use them properly. Don't boost frequencies that you feel are lacking in the speakers. Decrease the frequencies you feel there are too much of from the speaker. Going above reference (0) adds distortion and you lose headroom and dynamic range.

I use DSP EQ to remove a 10dB room resonance. It needs a sharp Q at a specific frequency; not attainable with regular EQs I guess regular hardware EQ is a less flexible version that can EQ certain things to taste, but for me they are usually in the wrong frequency for the application I want :)
