Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

It’s not like you need to milk every last ounce of performance out of your 30-06 to kill a deer. Anything from 140-200 grains would do the job at any reasonable hunting range. Personally, I use 165 accubond because I like the terminal performance ( doesn’t over or under expand on deer).

Too many commentators have this (conscious/subconscious) compulsion to try and be the pinnacle of performance or surgically dissecting everything to the Nth degree. As Ron would say, "Dead is dead," and a deer ain't gunna know the difference between a 145 and 180 grains, in the off chance it does, it probably won't for very long. We are talking deer after all, not elk, moose, bear....

I third this motion. I hunt in 100 yards or less distances (heavily wooded riverbeds in the NE part of my state) and have never had any problems with any “legal” caliber including my 160 gr 30-06. I actually hunt with a Henry levergun in .357 Magnum now that I’m older but in my younger days the 30-06 was king of the hill for deer. I still hunt occasionally with the .-06 and rarely will carry my 45-70.

My old savage really likes 165gr Federal Fusions. It shoots most very well, from 150 - 180gr, 1” or less usually, but the Fusions just tighten up to 1/2” at 100 nearly all the time. Sometimes not, sometimes it’s me, I can’t say if it’s ever really the bullets fault. I’ve had days where I couldn’t hit my ass with both hands. But I’m sure that’s me.

There are 3 bullet weights for . 30-06 that make the most sense, and 150 is not one of them. 99% of what we need done with a . 30-06 can be done efficiently with 165s or 180s between 2700 FPS and 2900 FPS. Anything else is really special application insurance for a perceived condition or circumstance. Splitting hairs is... Splitting hairs.

If it works reliably, any inefficiency is buried under a ton of that reliability. Reliability is achieved when you hit the threshold of enough. When you have more than enough for what you need to achieve, you will rarely see reliability falter. Trying to determine a "best" bullet may be pointless if the "worst" has more than enough capability for the job.

I use 150 grain bullets almost exclusively when I load or hunt (AND plink at the range) with a 30-06. I don't put emphasis on "long range" shooting...at least by today's standards. They work for everything that I use an 06 for. If I hunted for bigger stuff.... I'd use 180s. Like elk... AND, 200 and 220 round nose for BIGGER and NASTIER stuff. Yeah, 180 can be an ideal all-around bullet weight....depending style and bullet construction. But since I hunt deer in the east, when shots over 200 yards are truly rare, 150s are more than enough. And more fun to shoot, since 06s don't kick near as bad with 150 grain bullets.

.30-06 was built around the 150 grain spitzer. It's what made it replace the .30-03!
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 9 ай бұрын
It is true that the 150 grain FMJ spitzer was the original bullet for . 30-06. That was cutting edge for military use in 1906. Its also true that military ball ammo was and is slower than commercial ammo has been for decades. 150s at what we now consider reduced . 30-06 soft point loads, @ around 2700 FPS that are approximating early military ball and WWII era M2 ball velocity are pretty decent deer loads. There is plenty of deer getting capability in . 300 Savage and . 308 Winchester, so if deer is all you are chasing, a reduced speed, reduced recoil .30-06 with 150s works well on several points. Reduced carcass damage with lower velocity and hyper expansion is one benefit of not using the fastest load you can cram in your rifle.
@j.r.6271
@j.r.6271 9 ай бұрын
@@johnnorman7708 You aren't wrong, but it is only 'reduced' compared to modern loads. All the hunters in africa using it alongside .303 British and whatnot all through the early 1900s were still able to take african game up to and including rhinos and elephants with it and similar at the slower velocity threshold and with the crappier bullet selection of the time. The jump to modern loads is less pronounced than most think for the game you could take with either or.
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 9 ай бұрын
@@j.r.6271 Oh it was very good way back when at those early lower speeds and simple cup and core bullets or solids as called for. Compared to its contemporaries it was the one to beat. Way I see it for ballpark comparisons, is 150s @2700 FPS are about military spec.. 150s at 2900 are commercial spec. hunting ammo. That 200 FPS spread is rarely a full 200 FPS as typically loaded. Bullets of 150 grains at 2700 FPS in any caliber from 6.5/.264 up to 8/.323 are a serious load for the game fields or battlefields. Considering the original thought regarding 150s and . 30-06 as a hunting load, I do not consider the 150 grain to be your best base line "universal" choice. 165s or 168s just strike a better weight and velocity balance for a starting weight as a do it all in the . 30-06. Funny how stuff evolves and "conventional" wisdom readjusts itself. John Barsness wrote about his experiences with . 30-06 and bullet weight choices over the years. He pretty much nailed it. He too found 165s a much more practical starting point than 150s, if for no reason other than wind drift alone at longer ranges across the Montana prairie.

@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 9 ай бұрын
@@phillipdouglas6454 Actually there were 2 bullet weights and ammo types common for WWII. M2 ball with lead core was the standard at 150 grains. The M2 AP (armor piercing, "black tip") had a penetrator core and was reported as 163-168 grains. Before the war, and guaranteed to have been issued early in the conflict due to existing stocks, there was .30 M1 ball ammo at 173 grains. The M1 was a boat tail spitzer that really improved results at extreme long range for machine guns and rifles as well. For whatever reason, it was replaced when the M1 Garand was adopted. Probably not super compatible with the Garand's gas operating system. The .30 cal Browning MGs and the 1903 and 1917 rifles had no issues other than notably more recoil than 150 grain bullets in the rifles. ,

Why did the clip stop? 150gr is too small, 180 is much better. Heavier will give a better BC and SD, but velocity will suffer. That means going the PRC route and having a bigger case, longer round, higher twist rate , more recoil and its a different rifle.
@ntsomelo7232
@ntsomelo7232 8 ай бұрын
Ugh..I apologize in advance, but KZfaq feeds me this. The 06 is handicap because it's an 06. 😅. Even with a higher BC bullet which for a 30 caliber bullet is 180 or 190 or higher to even begin competing with a 260 thru 284 class, it's struggles with velocity. The thing is about bullet choice is sometimes the rifle picks the load it likes and accuracy and confidence still Trumps what bullet you want to use. The ballistic coefficient doesn't mean much at 100-200yds.

Don't understand why these people talk about BC and sectional density when most people use a cartridge for targets inside of 200 yds. My 150s are at 3k and inside of 200 yds are not going anywhere. Better yet are my 130 ttsx going 3220. Slow enough not to blow apart and can effectively get through several swine at once. If I need to shoot ridges my 190 Bergers will do 600 yds all day long. The 308 only hangs to 150 grain pill, but really starts losing quickly after. 06 for life here.

No need to reinvent the wheel on this one, deer and elk have not evolved armor plating in the 117 years that the 06 has been getting tags on them. A 180 grain bullet at 2700 will kill everything just as dead as it did for grandpa, and modern propellants will boost that to over 2800 without fuss. Yes. I've use 180 gr Core-Lokt soft points for whitetails for decades. They mushroom to twice their size and destroy lungs and hearts. I dropped a buck at 450 yards (I did have a scope with rangefinder and drop compensator, to be completely honest, tho). I would have no hesitation using that same bullet for moose or bear. Humans have been killing deer, elk, moose and bears with sticks and arrows for centuries. It's not like they are armor-plated. Know your drops, to make sure you get your shot placement right.

I could care less about making my 30-06s qnd and 308s "relevant." For 3 decades I have been killing deer, elk, antelope, caribou and moose with 30-06, 308, 270 win, 243 win, etc. I use these rounds because I love them due to my grandfather and uncles using them and handing down rifles to me in those calibers. I do not take shots over 400 yards. That is my personal ethical hunting range.

There's an old guy in my home town that is still alive and he killed his last deer two years ago. He's 89 now. More huge racks hanging up in his shop than anybody for miles. He killed his first four Elk with a Marlin 30-30. out in Colorado in the sixties. Most of the big deer were killed with a 25-06 or a .22 mag. 😉
