Warning. Went out in the hot tent and bought the blocks from Tractor Supply. These blocks really soot up your pipe and they don't burn as hot as wood. During the night, it was getting cold, so I tried adding some wood to the stove after having these blocks in the stove. They don't break down as quickly as you think. It actually caused a blockage in my stove as some of the blocks didn't burn all the way. Its not a good thing when its below freezing and you can't put any more wood in the fire. Ended up having to use small shovel and pull the unburned portions of the blocks out of the stove so I could put wood into it. Once wood was used, the stove started heating up the tent much more warmer than the fuel blocks. Also when I tore down the stove when packing up, the stove pipe was really coated heavily with soot. The spark arrestor was starting to get clogged pretty good. I did try the blocks thinking it would be a great idea, but my one night in the woods with these changed my mind to go back to regular wood. I hope anyone else who tries these will have better luck than I did. Don't know if I just got a bad batch of fuel blocks or what, but make sure you have a little backup plan if something similar happens to you like it did me. This isn't a knock at your video! I loved the outside the box thinking! It would have been really nice if it worked out with me. The idea of not having to put more wood in the stove for 4 hours during the night was a fantastic idea! Keep up the testing and outside the box thinking!

Wow I truly am shocked and sorry that happened, definitely not a positive experience. I did not have any issue with my test runs or i certainly would of posted different results. What did you have chimney damper and airflow vent in door set at? How cold was it outside? Do you think lower temperatures could be part of culprit? I know I have had a lot more soot build up on colder nights than slightly warmer nights. Afterall creosote forms by hot smoke cooling rapidly on cold pipe, this is why homes are recommended double or even triple wall insulated pipes. I agree the blocks do smolder for long time, but really seen this as a good thing holding heat inside longer. I hope you don't mind, I am going to note your comment in description for others to take warning and test for themselves beforehand. Thank you for replying, I will be testing this more in colder weather and do a update.

I'm not shocked at your findings at all, you are absolutely correct. Some of the world's best stoves are Scandinavian & the manufacturer's warn against all night burning. Loading a stove & turning it right down is the most inefficient & potentially dangerous practice. You could easily have succumbed to CO poisoning. Be sure to have a CO detector in your tent at all times.
@BarkEater
@BarkEater 2 ай бұрын
Always have both a C0 and smoke detector wherever you are using a wood stove. As for night burning, while growing up nearly everyone who lived in my area used wood stoves as main source of heat and if you didn't fill and damper down, your pipes would freeze. Its not a uncommon practice even today.

Exactly what I thought when I bought them today, had to put to the test. I think they would burn even longer in a tent fully dampered down. I larger tent stove that could hold 1 ½ or 2 wow you'll be cooking on it in morning. Thanks for watching 👍

Thats great to hear. I think the key is dialing in the airflow just right to your stove and conditions. Once that's figured out these blocks definitely can help keep warmth longer. Appreciate you stopping by to report results. 👍

@BarkEater it got so hot the fire didn't need much oxygen at all to burn, I have one of the cheapest stoves you can get on Amazon, and I had the damper in front close all the way, it was pulling in air from the smallest of gaps on the door and that was enough to sustain it. I had to blow off the ash twice but it have a pocket bellows and it wasn't difficult. I used 2 fuel blocks right next to eachother and I built and upside down fire on top of them to get it started and banked it with hardwoods.

Some others and myself had mixed results since filming this. I think ½ a block over a base layer of hardwood burns cleaner. You need to keep dampers flowing air so the block dont smolder too much or it gets soot buildup in pipe when very cold. Experiment with what works for you and have fun. Thanks for watching

I’ll have to try that. If you get 6hrs your sleep system will from hot only need to keep you warm for 2hrs for a full night sleep should not be a problem if you have an appropriate sleeping system

Exactly the point I made. Sleep system is all you should rely on. Thanks for watching 👍
@aviatordave1
@aviatordave1 10 ай бұрын
That’d be great. You could have the video do double duty to catch the actual temp of the stove out of the outdoor, windy environment. I liked that you pointed out, in this video, that part of the solution is having the right sleeping system. It sure won’t need to be 80-100 degrees in the tent if you’ve got a good pad with a suitable bag.
@BarkEater
@BarkEater 10 ай бұрын
Exactly 💯. Thats where a lot of people are misinformed with small hot tent stoves, they aren't designed or large enough to continuously heat a thin fabric tent for long term. I highly recommend the US military cold weather bag combined with the lighter patrol bag on extreme cold trips or something similar. I'll touch base on that setup in the next vid as well. Appreciate your input, you've given me some good ideas to run with.

Yep, just did a test in my tent in the backyard (camping out with the kids) in my small Luxe 3W and although these bricks burn for quite a long time (stove was still a little warm in the morning) with your baffles around 20% open, they create a LOT of soot! Pretty much everything on the stove had a layer of shiny, thick black soot which took me quite a while to clean out. I would only use these on an outdoor fire in something that's easy to clean. @@BarkEater

I've had mixed results since making this video. Sometimes they burn clean and long other times they smoldered and made lots of nasty goo in pipe. I think it needs to be dialed in just right with good airflow to keep them burning clean. I think this winter I will be trying just ½ of one with hardwood chunk mix and see if that is any better. If you didnt already have a bed of coals in there i would put two little sprig rails of fat wood on the bottom of the stove and strike them to flame and slide that block right on top of them. It wouldnt have any choice but to light up. I got a pkg of that fatwood from atwoods farm & ranch. (It rhymes i know) that stuff is flammable like old railroad tie chips.

It is model S6 danchel Outdoors. I would recommend it but with minor modifications that I notice a lot of stoves need. Damper on pipe is just a straight shaft with steel ring if you forget what way ring is you don't know where damper is. I added a little pice of metal as indicator. Top cap I added about 18" steel fishing leader so cordage tie off for pipe isn't near heat of pipe. I can explain and show pics in my Instagram if you find me there.
