Have two fancy goldfish in a 50 gallon indoor pond. Plant all my stem plant trimmings in their tank. Yes they munch them but they like it and I don’t mind. Some of them have survived and are thriving. They love duckweed which works out great. Have pothos growing around the outside so the roots take care of what plants should and they don’t bother the roots. Also have whiteclouds and ramshorn and pond snails in with them and so far so good. They are each about 4-5 inches rn. Spot and Marbles❤

I have a 90 gallon tank well it’s out away now because I inherited/bought the 135 gallon fish tank. It used to be Walmarts fishtank and stand when they used to sale live fish so the tank is old but super thick glass. I over winter my three common plecos in that but in the summer they’re outside in the pond living their best lives. They range from 19-23 inches. One I named Señor Bigotes he’s 21 inches long the other two were inherited with the tank. Right now with my plecos out in the pond I’m playing around with the tank getting it how I want so when the plecos come to over winter they can destroy my tank again. It’s a viscous cycle but that’s why makes this hobby fun. Right now I’m playing around with the filtration on it trying to optimize it the best I can.

For a 5 gallon, you can use a scarlet badis as the center piece with a small school of chili rasboras! They are real tiny and the scalet badis really is a boisterous centerpiece

I did a placate betta with a school of chilis - really fun. They now share the bottom with a pair of khuli loaches and shrimp. Everyone breeding except the loaches :)

@@jawjagrrl Bettas are cool like that. They may get stressed out with bigger fish. I have long-fin red Betta with a school of chilis in a paludarium. He ate all Cherry shrimp and tiny snails, but he's ignoring frozen mysis and pest planaria. Most Bettas are fine with shrimp, but not him. 😅

Was surprised scarlet badis weren’t mentioned Much better fit imo: 5 gallons is considered the bare minimum for a betta (with 10 gallons being better), but scarlet badis are super tiny and can even be kept with something like clown killifish

A Betta and half a dozen rasboras sounds crowded to me. I'd the tank is bare bones, maybe not. Remember that hardscape and plants take up swimming space. Imagine if 75% of your home's space was full.. how crowded would you feel?

My first community tank had 3 dwarf gourami. Thought we had a good mix of male/female, until the matured. Ended up being all males, but because we had them together since juvenile their aggression towards eachother and other fish was very minimal

To anyone who feels like they need a big tank 40-100gal to have a good community tank you can do so much with a 30-20gal aquarium. I have a 30gal aquarium one with 12 salt and pepper corys, 4 albino bristlenose plecos and 2 starlight plecos (which will be moved to their own breeding tank) +20-30 bluedream shrimp and a 20L with 7 pangio khulis, 10 white cloud minnows +40-60 assorted neocaridina shrimp

My amazon puffers love the Xtreme "big fella" pellets. They help keep their teeth trimmed as well. They also love freeze dried krill, frozen blood worms, and of course, tiny snails!

I’d like some advice on my community tank idea: I have a 40gal breeder and have been on forums asking for community tank ideas and have been told that this group I have in mind is good but id like to ask here in case someone reading this has experience with these fish together. 1 female pearl, opaline or powder blue gourami, 3 female honey gourami, 1 female apistogramma borelli, 10 neon tetras, 5-6 emperor tetras, and 6 panda corydoras. Is this overstocked or not a good group? My parameters and tank info for anyone wondering: Ph: 7.0-7.6 (more towards 7.2) Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 5-10ppm Temp: 78-80F And the tank is planted with over 10 different species including floating plants, aquaponics on the top of the tank, bamboo on the top, driftwood, multiple rock hides, rocks, stratum plant substrate, black sand, LED light and 3 sponge filters.

Great suggestions! I have owned all of the fish mentioned, except for an Oscar. However My, my dad kept them when I was a child. They were giant sweeties... unless they were eating or being instigated with food before it was dropped in the tank for "showing off" for guests 😁

The only live plant I've kept from being destroyed by the 7 goldies in my 55 gallon is Amazon swords. I have a 29 gallon with white clouds and albino corys (I was checking in to get ideas beyond a betta sorority and guppies) and was surprised how I had several inch-long roots from pothos clippings in a week when the ones with the goldfish only had nubs after a month. Then I realized that the goldfish were probably eating the roots as they emerged.

I have had great experiences with a 2-gallon tank on my desk for a single betta. I avoided filtration by using a dedicated turkey baster to clean the gravel and remove/replace one cup of water per day. I had him trained to ask for food; I figured out how many Betta Bio Gold pellets he needed per day and I'd lay them on my desk in front of his tank in the morning. He would watch me work and when he wanted a pellet, he'd go down to the bottom of the tank, look at a pellet and wiggle at me. I'd feed it to him, tell him what a smart and beautiful boy he was, and get back to work.

I'm setting up my first aquarium since childhood, a 29 gallon, and tomorrow's the day (off for Victoria Day) I finish my tank stand! It's taken awhile and evolved to include a 10 gallon quarantine tank behind, a lighted grow box underneath (with Pothos port,) a side shelf for two 5 gallons or a long 11, and a coffee/work counter. I'm building my tiny cramped hallway into quite the fish room. But I'm nervous about an angelfish, one of my original first choices. I'm thinking of a dwarf gourami, and I really want a honey gourami since seeing another vid of yours.

I never thought of an Angel for my 29 gallon. Interesting...I like them but always though they needed something bigger. Mind you, I was considering Pearl Gourami for that tank and some might consider it too small for them as well.

Same, I think they might be too big for it. I guess people say 30 gallons because they aren’t very active fish and so (presumably) won’t be too bothered by the lack of space That said bigger is always better of course, a 55 being considered ideal for angelfish, especially for a group of them But with a pearl gourami I think a 40 breeder would suffice; plenty of space to swim around and, unlike with the angels, you don’t have to worry about it being too shallow for them

I had a breeding pair of oscars when i was in high school. I loved those fish and had them for years and years but they were mean. Maybe its because they were almost always in breeding mode but the only fish i ever kept with them that they didnt murder for sport was a 10" pleco. They also constantly rearrange their tank so all i could really keep in there were flat river stones and smooth pebbles. Plants they tore up. I had them in a 55 gallon tank which seemed fine. Would love to get a bigger tank in the future and have them again. Now i have a 29/30 gallon tank that i want to do a live plant set up in and that male gourami looks beautiful! I need him lol

For a five gallon tank, an australe orange or a gardneri would be beautiful and be more unique than a betta. You wouldn't even need a heater, and a small sponge filter will work great! Really almost all killifish (except for the largest) would work great.

I have a pair of Ramirezi cichlids in 20gal tank (84l) with Blue green neon tetras and a colony of cherry shrimp (which got there by accident). No bigger problems unless Rams are breeding.

I keep a clown loach as a center piece fish. Even though they recommended to be kept in groups mine is happy and friendly with everybody. He is 16 yeas old and he outlived many tank mates. He often reminds me a dog. He sleeps upside down on the ferns or ground. And when he sees me he rushes to the corner to get his food and all the other fish come out from hiding like SAEs.

I have a 20L now missing a centerpiece fish since Frank (powder blue dwarf gourami) died. I have 18 small tetras (neons and embers) in there, as well as a female platy and 2 snails, but it still seems empty. Gotta set up the quarantine tank and go shopping!

I have started doing the puffer nail clipping without an anesthetic as I'm worried it could hurt them over time. Just keep them close to the surface with your gloved hand or they will blow up to little angry bubbles.

Kept a breeding electric blue acara pair. Awesome fish, very interactive and intelligent. Never keep snails, tetras or other small fish with this fish though, sooner or later they'll eat them; sometimes I felt they killed snails just for fun and games! Just like lion cubs playing with warthogs. Powdered dwarf gourami: what a beautiful fish this is especially when you switch on cobalt blue lights. Very interactive again, however here's the catch: they are the most susceptible gourami to gourami disease. I had like 5 of them and all of them died in a short span of time, this is mostly due to inbreeding practices by professional breeders. Instead, I'd recommend pearl gourami... Beautiful pearls all over its body and very calm. They are unfortunately "near endangered" fish, so by keeping them you contribute to environment.

Pearl gourami are bred in captivity for the aquarium trade, and it’s the main reason that they will continue to exist even if they become extinct in the wild due to habitat loss.

My first fish tank I got when I was 10 was a 125 I had a white gourami she was 12 inches a black Oscar he was 18 inches I named him Zeus and then a common sucker fish he was a foot

I had an Oscar when I was a kid, I originally had five, but the dominant male ended up killing the rest. It shared the tank with a trio of Geophagus Jurupari (beautiful fish), and a trio of various sized plecos. He had no issue with the Geophagus or the plecos, it was just other Oscars he hated. Sadly, I had to leave them behind when we moved to another country because my parents got work there. Oh, well, I hope to one day get the space to keep Oscar's again. Or at least the G. Jurupari.

Angelfish are my favorite. You get that fun cichlid behavior in a sleek, hearty, beautiful fish. I have 3 in a 40 gal. 2 males 1 female. The aggression comes out when the girl is ready to lay eggs but they all doo well aside from the bullying

Any suggestions for a 40breeder with nano fish (1.2”+) that is at 74f? I love bettas but I don’t want to keep my tank so warm. I would prefer something that isn’t bottom dwelling (love apistos but they’re def on the bottom). Love the idea of a paradise fish but with small nano fish I hear they can be aggressive? HELP! Lol.

Have you considered Cherry Barbs? They're pretty docile. We have 5 in our 40 breeder with Platies and Cardinal Tetras. Never had any issues.

Cherry barbs can get nippy in smaller groups sometimes could do dwarf gourami honey gourami thick lip gourami or just do a different color of small fish for the contrast
