Retro had to fight back hard against the Japanese overseeing it, and why they lost the battle in the second one. Metroid is far, far more successful in the west and with the Texas based Retro studios working on the prime games, Nintendo has had odd creative differences. I think it would best for them to settle for the audience they know they can hold onto, and not try to reel in the Japanese market.

Samus is the videogame equivalent to Ripley aka Sigourney Reaver, who is of the boomer generation. When I think about Samus I want to think of a little boy's heroic fantasy version of his 80s action mom, not just yet-another-sexualized waifu. Nothing wrong with characters like Eve or 2B, but in Nintendo's case they already have Fire Emblem (and plenty of other franchises) for that. Samus (The Boss) Aran is not a sex object. She is your mom. Your teacher. Your way older cousin. From when you were four. She was huge, and she fought the monsters under your bed. That is the feel of authentic Samus. That is the Samus of Nintendo Power. That is what the western face of MP1 conveys, and the remaster is even better. *TL;DR* _I prefer a Samus who wouldn't look out of place talking to Solid Snake._ Like she was designed by Kojima. Waifunized anime Samus just doesn't fit.

Jill Valentine has an anime model from MvC2. It looks great and appropiate for her game. The first instance of "anime Samus" was Zero Mission. I had no complaints there. It's when they took "anime Samus" and forced her into MP2, MP3, and Other M that it became a problem. Why? Imagine stylizing Jill Valentine after Xenosaga, and trying to import such a 3D Model in. It'd just look...wrong. You can't take it seriously anymore. "Cartoonishly sexy" is not the point of a character like Samus. It might work for a character like Eve or Yorha Unit 2B for its own separate reasons, but it just plain doesn't mesh for Samus and her environment. People GROAAAAANED at Other M. Samus is supposed to come off as the Spartan II "Space Soldier" type. She's supposed to look practical, like a female cop or a paramedic in the midst of doing her job. Not ugly of course, but certainly not hypnotic either. She's supposed to look and feel like...well... Jill Valentine. But blonde. And that's about it.

I don't think it's that they necessarily _change_ her face. Samus isn't a real physical person. She's just an idea. Each time they create a face based on her, it's gonna be a little different depending on who's making it and what kind of hardware/assets they're making it with. The reason why some characters, like say Jill Valentine from Resident Evil between 2002 and 2015, looked the same in every game was because she had a real life face model that was used for her likeness. Usually developers aren't making the decision to change a character's face; they just aren't going out of their way to make it look exactly the same.

@@SSlash Most recurring game characters don't have the same face unless they're using the same facial capture model. Especially characters as old and long running as Samus. In the game Half-Life: Alyx all the characters have different looking faces from what they had in Half-Life 2. Close enough to generally look like the _character,_ if not the exact same person. Isaac Clarke's face doesn't look anything alike in any of the Dead Space games. Recurring characters in the Assassin's Creed games have different looking faces even when they _have_ consistent facial capture models. Unless the developer is going out of their way to keep the character's face consistent between games, paying careful attention to detail, then it's going to look different. Most of the time it's just not a priority - especially when there's entire console generations between titles.

There are some parts here and there where you can still see her eyes blink/face in her visor such as if you are really close to a blast door right before using a missile to blow off the cover, there are some other conditions which will cause it to happen but forget. Otherwise definitely agree on missing being able to see the reflection effect regularly.

Yeah, one thing i loved in the og game is that you could always see samus' eyes, you could even see the eyes in the reflection of the water or, in cutscenes, trough the visor because it was transparent. I didn't like how they added a light in the visor, not allowing us to see her eyes, being able to see the eyes made samus more unique and gave more character, according to me

There’s definitely blinking in the remaster, I see it all the time, if you happen to be turning when the flash happens, you can see her turn her head and eyes too.

Honestly seeing her blink makes no sense, since you're seeing through her eyes.

Strong disagree, as metroid prime 2 and 3 looked more cartoony than 1 animation wise and all. This keeps in line with the intentions of 1 from a graphical standpoint, whilst showcasing what the switch is capable of in the right hands

I was going to say and I'm glad you learned that. The reason why we didn't realize before is that we aren't an editor cutting this video and have to frame through like these guys, thinking it's strange when in fact it's actually not. If someone understands kinesiology or are an animator, they would know that we blink asynchronously. Gamexplain is just trying to be cheeky so I don't blame them for their naivety.

@@lambasted6886 Don't be pedantic. The problem with the original blink is that it's far too slow and thus it's less of a blink and more of a "One eye shut, one eye open, one eye shut, one eye open." An asynchronous blink isn't the problem, it's that she blinked far too slow for it to make any sense. Likewise, in real life, you would have to have quite the keen eye to even notice it.

They used baked lighting instead of reflective lighting. Which is why your shots or charge don't light up dark areas like it did before

Exactly. Remember that the true root source inspiration of Samus is Sigouny Weaver from the ALIEN franchise. For Metroid is a *horror game.* Except for your mom. She's is the one in the super-hero space armor slaying the shadows. This face fits. I much prefer this mature marine look who'd fit in talking to Solid Snake, Master Chief, or Chris Redfield. Metroid Fusion & Zero best Samus

I agree, that look is iconic, but there's no reason to think she won't have them in the remasters of 2 and 3. Seems like she just hadn't settled on a hairstyle at this point in the timeline.

Precisely. Two Words: Uncanny Valley. The anime look only works for Zero Mission and Fusion because those games are pixellated. In full 3D, she should look like someone who'd fit in with Dead Space or Resident Evil, seeing as the art direction is of a realistic space-horror game. It really all goes back to the ALIEN franchise. Dead Space and Resident Evil would just be jarring if Jill Valentine looked Anime while the zombies and the dudes looked realistic. In short, Samus should basically look like Claire Redfield. But blonde. That's about it. ... ...... Which this model nails. I want it for future Prime games including MP2 and MP3 remake. Unless they make another 2D pixelated Metroid Game, they should just leave anime Samus behind. Again, two words: Uncanny Valley. You may as well remake Twilight Princess with Toon Link.

And that is what I don't like about this, she already looks too old while this is chronologically the 2nd game in the timeline just after the events of Zero Mission, she is supposed to be around her 20s, if this was Super metroid it wouldn't be so weird, the model itself is fine, but it would make more sense in Dread, which ironically looks younger than here even if its only her eyes

That only works when the rest of the game is pixelated. For full 3D, it invokes the Uncanny Valley if you ask me. Remember, Metroid is a semi-horror game. She should look like she'd fit in Dead Space or Resident Evil, and this model delivers. Nothing wrong with Zero Mission Samus for ZERO MISSION but if you're going to go that route for Prime you may as well overhaul the entire art style to take after Hollow Knight instead.

That's how I (and many others it seems) felt about toon Samus in MP2 and MP3 anyway. If you're going to make her look like a cartoon you have to make the entire setting look like a cartoon.
