Charlie Rich was a talent that sadly escaped so many! The guys music has touched me so deeply!

This is exactly how I felt about closed doors song. I watched Charlie Rich sing Closed Doors on the Conway Twitty Show on Tv with my Dad. I asked my Dad, what happens behind closed doors, and he said ask your mother. I,m 58 and was about 9 or 10 years old. I admire the undying love Charlie had for his wife.Charlie was so honest and such a great,great Piano player.Rest in peace angels in heaven Charlie,and Dad. My Dad spent a lot of his older years alone and sad before dying,which is why I cry every time I hear Charlie,s music,but it also takes me back to the 70’s,when life was so innocent and really fun being a kid.

Charlie Rich is another one of my all time musical heroes. I grew up listening to his music and first heard his music in the early 70’s when I was 5 years old. I was immediately hooked on the “Silver Fox” Sound. Thank you for this amazing story. It’s one of the best ever!

my uncle Jesse Roberson was a 'Lead Guitar sessions musician from Brunswick Ga & later Atlanta, he played on 2 of Charlie's albums in the 60's..

Charlie Rich is one of the country artists I was aware of growing up in New York. Even my grandfather had his albums. Good music is good music

I like the early Charlie Rich Sun recordings, but my most favorite will always be “The Most Beautiful Girl” from 1973… I remember hearing it on my little radio in my bedroom at dawn before I had to get up and go to school when I was thirteen years old . It was early in the winter time and there would be frost on the window pane and I would walk to school with that song in my head. Something about it just draws you in, the sound of his voice and the music which is melancholy, but warm and comforting somehow despite the sad story it tells… I’ve always loved the song and never gotten tired of it…. I always heard that Charlie hated country music. He was a jazz player at heart. He turned to country because he wasn't making it in the jazz world and, quite literally, needed to feed his family. There is a clip of him playing "Mood Indigo" on the Jools Holland show.

Always loved “Rollin’ with the Flow.” After hearing this story, I understand the song even better.

What a great story and storyteller

My memory of Charlie Rich was that he wasn’t your typical country singer for that time but he had a strong voice that was more powerful than most. When the Nashville top brass told him to jump then he would just pull up a piano bench and have a seat.

It was in the late '80s, as I remember, when I and my friend John Stover visited Charlie at his house in Memphis. John, who taught guitar at the university, was giving Charlie's and Margaret's son guitar lessons. John was working on a record, and he and Charlie disappeared into Charlie's recording studio to set something right. I sat in the living room and chatted with Margaret. Directly, Charlie and John came into the room. Charlie opened a bottle of single-malt that someone had given him, and we went to work on it. Charlie and Margaret were gracious, down-to-earth people. After a few whiskies, Charlie sat down to play a little jazz on his white baby grand. Later, as John and I were making our way to the door, Charlie got out his Minolta and photographed us. It'd be fun to see the snapshot, after all this time, but it'll never happen. My memories must be my only souvenir of Charlie's and Margaret's hospitality.

Did you know Charlie Rich lived in Benton, Arkansas in the 1960's? I went to school with his children, he had a Lake House on Lake Rich, off Military Road, I graduwate High School 1967 before he went back into music. The business refused to let him play his own Piano on Sessions.

My favorite three songs of Charlie the silver fox was behind closed doors, most beatiful girl & keep on rolling with the flow, never has any other country artist to date has duplicated the silver fox's talented singing voice.

met him when i was about 10 was at a friends house silver mercedes blue convertible who gets out of car charlie rich only reason i knew who he was my dad had is album behind closed doors was on it and most beautiful girl in the world and his back plate on car said rich-1 can i get your autograph mr rich he said yes son how you no who i am ? here you everyday my dad he said ty your daddy son whats his name sigined it to my dad and one for me very nice man this was in fort lauderdale!

That waz another great story

Loved his country stuff in the 70s, especially Behind Clothes Doors, but when I was in elementary school in the 60s he had a hit on the top 40 stations with "Lonely Weekends" that 's just the best, I think it's a Sun recording. In the later 60s he had another top 40 song Mohair Sam that was also a good song. Jim Herrington, thank you.

Another terrific story shared ~ and you are in the middle of a tour, nicely done sir. Mr Rich wasn't played much in our home, but I do remember his songs being played on summer nights, after dinner was done, Uncles and Aunt's into a few rye & waters and us kids being put to bed in the tent out side of the cottage. The guys would all sing along to his songs 🎵 😂

i too grew up with the same Music this was not only a very interesting story it was hysterical as well as a boy my Dad drove VW Beetles and the option he chose for them was a AM radio. so he could get a Country Western radio Station he listened to and sang along in tune while driving my Dad usually had his left arm out of the drivers window and he tapped his fingers to the music onto the roof of the Beetle so much that the roofs would have little dents in them typically my Dad bought brand new VW Bugs and he drove them as long as he could when i became a Teenager my Dad and i often stayed up all evening working on a project in our garage together there my Dad had saved a old Clock Radio i bought in the 1970s and the Clock had stopped working but the AMFM radio was fine and had a nice sound so that radio played Classic Country in the garage 24/7 for years and years

One of my all-time favorites. Oddly I had listened to Charlie for many hrs before I learned that he was not only a Arkansas Boy , but being from Colt meant he was pretty dang close to me in Jonesboro. The list of Country Singers from Arkansas May not be as long as other places, but that list is very formidable wither the likes of Charlie Rich, Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell, Mu favorite Charlie Rich song?? Don’t got one, but I can name my favorite 8 or 10 !

I remember my parents would get me to do my Charlie Rich and Elvis impersonation for guests when I was like 6 they would laugh and clap good memories

My Dad was from Montana. Like Charlie Rich, he had the same demons. He used to warn me about the perils of drinking by saying two words: CHARLIE RICH.

I still think that the most gangster thing ever done at any awards show in the history of ever was Charlie taking out his lighter and setting John Denver's name on fire.

I always did like Charlie Rich I remember when I was in high school someone would crank up the volume in their car to hey did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world and you might catch a girl eye to eye and say yep she’s right here…

Little wonder that Charlie Rich (and so many other country stars of that era) detested the kind of fame that he achieved - he spent years suffering this kind of sugar-coated contempt for the small towns and truly country background that created him.

Same here, was very young guy, 14, when Charlies 2 biggies came out...Was definitely thinking about crossing the bridge from innocence.... Not long after, Third Rate Romance came out...It paired up nicely.... It all made for a great introduction to what awaited on the other side of that bridge. Nice story-tell Jim

I was a big fan of his music throughout his career. My two favorite songs by Charlie, both very different from one another, were an early version of Gonna Sit Right down and Write Myself a Letter and later his song Feel Like Going Home. He was a great talent.

Charlie setting John Denver on fire on TV was the best.

At the 1975 CMA Awards, Charlie Rich set John Denver's win -- and his own career -- on fire. The 1974 CMA Entertainer of the Year opened the envelope for the 1975 award, saw Denver's name, pulled a lighter out of his pocket and set the envelope on fire before walking off the stage. Denver had no idea what had happened, as he was only available via satellite. Rich was blacklisted from future CMA events after what his son referred to as "bad judgment." The Silver Fox admitted to being on a mix of gin and tonics and prescription pain medicine that night. It was never made clear if he was upset by Denver winning, or the infiltration of pop acts in country music. His career was never the same.
