even though I do not have Discus at this time, I am really enjoying this tank series...in my experience, nature always does it best, so to use both plants and filters based on nature's approach are the best of both worlds in my opinion. Thank you Danny!

It’s a very beautiful environment for the discus. I’m doing pretty much the same for the 280G that I am starting up soon.

Driftwood not only can look very nice and natural in an aquarium, but it also naturally lowers the water PH and produces a tannins, which discus like as that is what is in their natural habitat. If you’re that worried about small pieces of debris getting into the nooks and crannies in and around driftwood, then get a school of Corydoras as several types can thrive and do well at an 84 degree temperature. Some Whisker and large size Amano shrimp as well as nerite snails and this will also solve that problem (if it is one)!

Hey Danny, Beautiful tank! As for plant, i pretty sure most plant, i would say 80-90% plant will grow between 29-30 Degree c. The place where i stay, my fish tank water temp is constantly 29 to 30, sometimes 27 when monsoon period comes. I managed to keep bucephalandra series, Anubias series , Crypt wenditii, wisilli, lutea, lucen, prava, some unique species, Rotala series, Bylxa Japonica etc with CO2 (C02 does helps). My fishes did not sure sign of stress due to lack of oxygen. Just need to make sure the surface water movement is good. Just Curious, algae is number 1 concern for all Aqua Scaper, how do you deal with it? I always run into Algae... temp of 29c does not really help. Though i do agree on your point where we should keep the tank simple and easy to clean.

Hi, well in my experience the no1 cause of algae (the ones you really don’t want like hair algae, staghorn and others that damage plants) is unhappy, unhealthy plants. Reason 2 for algae (the ones you don’t mind as much like diatoms, green water, green spot, even cyano let’s say etc) is an imbalanced nutrients / plants ratio. Hence why I say what I say about the high temps and plants. Yes they might survive at 29 - 30 but they don’t really thrive and by that I also mean algae forming on them. So the way I avoid big algae issues is just by picking the right plants for the right setup, that’s all :)
