Many of our best Christmas songs came from the World War 2 years (yes I know many are very old from hundreds of years ago). The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire) is actually for soldiers wishing to be home even if only in their dreams. White Christmas was originally in the movie Holiday Inn and followed a few years later in the movie White Christmas.

For the first half of the 20th century, Bing Crosby was the most popular singer in the world. There are multiple versions released of this song-the original is from 1942-one from 1954 and this version is from 1962 which is the most heard and most popular version today.

Thanks for this reaction. Bing Crosby was an amazing music and movie star for decades. "White Christmas" was composed (music and lyrics) by Irving Berlin, a Jewish American songwriter born in Imperial Russia in 1888. He came to the USA with his family when he was 5, and lived to age 101, dying in 1989. He wrote roughly 1,500 songs (including "Puttin' on the Ritz"), of which 8 were nominated for Academy Awards, and 25 made it to the top of the hit parade.

He also wrote God Bless America. Growing up in abject poverty in lower Manhattan, he delivered papers to help feed his family. On one occasion he stopped at a pier to watch a boat come in. He leaned over and the money he had made from that day fell into the Hudson. He jumped in to fetch it and almost drowned in the rough water. Some passers-by pulled him out.

The version most often heard today on the radio during the Christmas season is the 1947 re-recording. The 1942 master was damaged due to frequent use. Crosby re-recorded the track on March 19, 1947, accompanied again by the Trotter Orchestra and the Darby Singers, with every effort made to reproduce the original recording session. The re-recording is recognizable by the addition of flutes and celesta in the beginning.

You know that 'White Christmas' is one of the very best Christmas songs of all time when it can even survive Michael Bolton screeching it out, lol. Coming from middle Tennessee where we've only had 1 real (barely a dusting doesn't count) White Christmas in the last 30 years... Dreaming of snow on Christmas is the best we can hope for, so this song holds a special place in my heart! For what its worth, its going to be 60 degrees and rainy this year. Sigh...

I love the movie White Christmas. A It stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen with Dean Jagger. Danny Kaye is primarily a comic. However, he can sing, dance in this movie. Also in his career he has done drama, and a music conductor. Rosemary Clooney is George Clooney's aunt. Vera Ellen was an accomplished dancer, in the movie her singing parts were dubbed in. White Christmas movie takes me through a range of emotions.

The song was a hit first in 1942. That was the first Christmas with America at war. The sentiment was perfect for this bleak time. At that time the country was concerned and good news was rare and there was the desire for positive feelings.imagine your son/husband in the Pacific, North Africa, or a Southern Us army base for basic training…. It's a treat to watch the old 1940's musicals if you can, you'll love them. Back then all of them could sing, dance and act. Some great movies to watch. And the sets and everything is a treat as well. This song is in a couple of movies and he was the one whistling too. The song was written by Berlin for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. The composition won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 15th Academy Awards. White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn (1942) - where the song "White Christmas" first appeared.

💫For my money, the most charming of Crosby's recordings of this song is the original, from the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn". It's a duet, but the female vocals are actually dubbed by someone other than the actress in the movie. Anyway, the film segment where they sing this perennial favorite is just as nice as the audio and the musical performance is just great, rich without being over-produced. A lot of people now only know Bing Crosby from numbers like this or "Silver Bells", but just about every popular singer in the 40s through the 60s did Xmas albums. It wasn't really a Crosby specialty.

Just excuse the Lincoln’s Birthday sequence and keep in mind it was filmed in 1942. Very cringey otherwise. 😜

Apparently after Googling it that I got the cast of the two movies mixed up. Clooney was in White Christmas not Holiday Inn and Ginger Rogers was in neither. Oh, and trishgorman6456 is right about the Lincoln's Birthday sequence. It is horrible but it was the time I Suppose. Amazing how your mind blocks out these things because you otherwise have fond memories.

He must have recorded this more than once because the version we had growing up in the sixties had some variations from this one.
