Nice machine but no info where to purchase. I want to build a small compressed earth brick home near Taos, N.M. I want a double wall with a space between them for natural insulation materials or at least recycled materials. While there will be much time and manual energy consumptiin, the construction of walls would be inexpensive. Above the walls would be locally cut vigas, then 2 x 6 boards, then covering, then earth and vegetation. Unlike adobe houses, I would prefer a slant house with a 4-12 pitch, to eliminate water leak issues. It would be cool if I could get voluntary help from the U. of New Mexico students studying alternative housing. But, that might be too much to expect or desire.

I think test how strong it can be after immersion by one little man 50 Kg goes on it is not really a good test. A good test should be to: 1/ get weight dry and weight after immersion to see how many water is inside, then 2/ use a calibrate piston compression with measure pressure tools to know how many N/cm2 (or how many bars) it can support to the maximum breaking condition on 10 units tested. By the time, this depend much more about: pressure at compression time, humidity in the mix, composition of the mixture and quality of mix (homogeneity), not really the tool (only for pressure operated to compact brick).

I agree, a more precise stress test, and you’ve laid out a detailed plan which I plan on adapting for other brick presses. But more impressive than the brick strength is how that man balances on one foot !

As much as I would like something like a BP714 or the like, for a 3rd World Country, they are just not in the realm of affordability. How do these CEBs from the Auram 3000 compare? With all the molds/forms they have, one can have with holes, etc (not just a plain rectangular block). Also, the Auram 3000 looks like a better fit for a 3rd World Country like mine (Philippines), where labor is relatively cheap (US$10 to $15 per day is the norm, and that's already in the capital).

Guy Fawkes Guy Fawkes : It seems that you have a few facts blended together in this comment. To make waterproof Compressed Earth Blocks that come close to the strengths you are referring to 6-8% Portland Cement or another kind of stabilizer must be used. Compressed Earth Blocks without cement will have strengths at or below 1000 psi

instead of classic ciment, some architects studies show that the best is to use 5% of Natural-Hydraulic-Lime ciment (NHL-2 is ok), also know as putty lime cement for NHL-3.5 or 5, who can go but not totaly best adapted for clay ground mix (but in Asia, i didn't find the appropriate nomination as long as entreprise didn't show what they put inside cement bags and low level study for build constructions and physics there... they have hot lime but nothing for construction more than easy portland cement). because classic hydraulic cement dry to quick and stay without any flexibility, but much more, it stop the air flow ! Then, because of that, it is definitely not adapted for earth constructions... people use it but in fact it is not a good idea and by the time, wall will show cracks probably and stop his best propertizes because of that. We can observe some damages after 20 years on that kind of wall where body thank cement was magic (but it is not). They just don't know what is it and do what other said. I'm from a culture where build good is build for long time... not for two years. We like to know what is inside the box, we can no more trust Mickey Mouse and Picsou. So do not tell people to use classic cement (i don't know what is "portland cement mean... but that is sure that the appropriate cement should contain Non Hydrolic Lime inside).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portland_cement ; basically the magic ingredient in all concrete. Also the highest greenhouse gas contributor to concrete / earth building. But damn it's good. Roman alternative en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pozzolan Now coming back into style because of CO2.
@DGDG0000000
@DGDG0000000 5 жыл бұрын
@@ngrader After searched, portland cement is a kind of hydraulic cement who contain lime calcit, but it is NOT Natural Hydraulic Lime well adapted for ground mixtures (definitely). The fact of non Natural Hydraulic cement is to totaly stop the air and that particularly is too bad for earth constructions. The idea of earth wall is to keep propertises of clay mixture ground, and not to kill it. So portland cement or cement only works a bit because low percent inside, but is steel not good for a long way to go. Lime by the time can accept clay ground. The advantage is that ground still hold his propertises and become more strong with natural hydraulic lime, also, no cracks risk by the time, it will become more strong than other cements (2 weeks to wait minimum). I think that way of thinking about put cement in ground is from USA... they put cement (or portland cement who is better but not adapted to) inside everything looks like it is magic (but it is not). They don't have a construction culture so old than Romans who demonstrate the power of lime for construction (aqueducs, bridges, churches, etc... thousand years old for some of them...). Also, the longer construction is not the stronger one, but the more adapted one to the geographical situation. And kill propertizes of a material by a wrong added linker is an opposit way of do good. If you are not sure, ok, why don't you ask what is inside cement, what is lime, hydraulic lime, natural hydraulic lime, putty lime and how is it made... mactually, we go in a shop and buy something... no one know what is inside. Crazy ! By the way, the need of lime or lime cement (cement you find in shop usualy for everything is totaly bad for this use, again...) inside ground compressed bricks is much more for big raining seasons area. In Europe continant, there is many old construction in earth, same in Africa or South America with zero cement mixed inside. That is just an observable fact. Well... pozzolan is not a linker, but an agregate to add to a linker and will give good propertises for stronger and light weight. They use this vulcan stone (vulcan stone differ from other families stone by the Earth process to product this kind of burned mineral without stratification) for construct bridges or some construction need to be strong, but not to much heavy. If the weight is not a problem, there is silicates who can go for a strong concrete inside the mix. The best linker all the time along the human story is still the lime (and from far). The only one interest of societies to use hydraulic derivate cement linker is the construction time who should be quick. Every thing there is sacrified for quick business, there is no way with strong constructions or best human constructions cultures (out of $ specs).

As there seems to be a few wise people here, could you suggest to me what using lime from a quarry would do? The quarry in question produces limestone blocks, cut straight from the ground, for housing. They do what they call an "ag lime" which is a 3 mm sand. Would this be suitable for use in a CSEB? If so, am using a 1 gravel, 5 sand, 3 clay and 1 cement mix. All materials are dry prior to starting.

We have set up projects in 25 countries around the world and have searched all over to find the best compressed earth block equipment and tools for the job. Our manual powered earth block machine is the absolute best in the world. It requires 2 people to pull the lever to compress the dirt into building blocks but what is often overlooked is the man power that is required to prepare and mix the soil before it is pressed. This project is in South Sudan where it is very hot and 3 teams of 5 people work to prepare, mix, then press the soil into Earth Blocks. While this may look inefficient in the video it proves to be much more efficient as members of the team are getting some rest before they begin making another batch of soil to be pressed. BEWARE OF MACHINES THAT SHOW ONE MAN LOADING AND ONE MAN PRESSING. THEY DO NOT WORK!!!!!!!! The compression ratio is not adequate if you see this "easy operation" in videos. If it looks easy in videos usually machines made in China THEY ARE CHEAP AND YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR WHICH IN THE END IS MORE EXPENSIVE!!!!! We have worked with so many frustrated people who have purchased these machines and had very poor results. Best of luck on your Earth Block journey!

i agree for workers under hot weather condition... i do alone myself in Thailand and it is difficult... the way to go is to go slowly. Also, earth construction can not be made quiclky... so... I disagree with prices for some reasons: price of construction of hand manual machin there is dependant of: 1 steel market price / rode market price 2 electricity price for product welding 3 price of welding tool 4 price of commercial works (his works consist of speaking and provide visibility) 5 time for construction and test of protoptype 6. quantity for production and sale should decrease te price And then here, if you make it yourself, it cost about 500$ of steel and rodes... and you neeed to have the welding station (arc welding is now around 250 $ for be able to do that), and electricity is little comparaid to the cost of tools and material. (yu also neeed to really know to weld... some people definitly drink to much to be able to weld something) China production is not so bad (some of them are, for sure...) and quality depend of material thickness, knowledge at weld time (sure if people weld in one time without care about deformation of metal, it will be not strictly plane or in the axes), and some problems is when they realy try to get price too down (like near the price of the material used...) because for do that, they use to low thicness and un-qualified welding workers. So you can find some equivalent of your in China (without the cache metal mechanism who serve nothing more than cancel the mechanism to be shown) around 1200-1500 $. IThink if you are a good commercial, you should justify this kind of expensive price with quality of commercial workers who assist client after they buy (if you do so). Also by provide some good information (who is not the case when i see your web site when you are talking about add cement... you never tell that it is not normal cement... because you don't know that... but add normal cement is a very bad idea for long term building), and then that is a demonstration of low knowledge around that. So i think that here... the half of the price is eat by commercial(s), and the real price of life where the machine has been made (ho no... that's wrong in some parts... not where the machine is made... but where the entreprise of the machine has been concepted and commercialised from, because of the price of the life there. We know that we can ask China to construct at cheap price what ever we want and sale looks like we do it all ourself... right ?). Also, no one will tell us the true about that, comptability of entreprise is something secret for some reasons. well... make money is not the problem in fact, the problem is to provide something at good price and to be able to have a normal life because of that.

@@DwellEarth the machines from china are good if you're doing your own house and then selling the machine away afterwards ... where the chinese machines are bad is if you're looking to turn earth block making into a business and hoping your machine will last 10 years ,, the chinese machines will work good for 2 years or so and then will start to break down

1. The block is NOT waterproof. In wet, cold weather it will freeze and chip away. It slowly absorbs water, like all concrete, unless it is protected somehow, e.g., an overhang. 2. Few soils are ideal, e.g., 70%sand+30%clay. Even the correct ratio must contain the right sand and clay. But adding more cement can compensate, How do you know how much? Make test blocks. How? And how do you test (what do you look for)? This requires research. There is no magic bullet (simple fix). Good earth is everywhere if you know how to look. And it's free, just add labor. Many additives may be used to bind but few make it waterproof, one being emulsified asphalt.

You should consider to use mix with real NHL-2 (Natural Hydraulic Lime from Saint Astier, French country). that way you will have a real isolated BTCS brick because of lime cement without break the quality of air pass through. This method to add hydrated lime (or better a real hydraulic natural lime) is the only one way i know for doing it the best way. Hydrated (putty lime) or better, hydraulic lime, mixed with sand is also used to cover earth walls by this specific mortar used for renovation of old earth and stone walls (and earth who are NOT stabilized) to protect them against the heavy rain or ice season without break the quality air exchange through the wall. It has been tested by experienced builders from long times ago and i find only two books (french one) related that and some other building knowledge. Hope this comment can help you to know what old experienced builders did (and do it again actually).
