I ended up moving into my MiL's home, and she left behind a 40 inch Trinitron. When it was time to get rid of it, I could just barely pick it up, and there was no way I could get down the stairs with it. My wife put an ad on Craigslist for a free TV, and it was gone after a few hours and a few people trying to lift it off the porch. I found the manual, and it said it weighed about 300 lbs.

likely the 40XBR700/800, I had the 700 variant, it's an HD CRT set that had great sound, but not so great for retro games due to the digital processing and improper scaling of resolutions, not natively supporting 240p/480i.

My family had one too. Unfortunately we used it until it died. Great TV for its time, altho expensive. $4000 Canadian iirc. stand extra. it supported up to 1080i. altho at that res all contents were in 16:9 so the image was smaller. We mostly just used it to watch standard def Tv. yes 300 lb. we didnt even get rid of it after it died. it sat there like a corpse in the living room next to a working lcd tv. eventually we moved and got the movers to take it away. 3 strong guys to take it down stairs. I just hope they managed to repair it. Lots of great memories. I still have the remote 😂

Last summer I was at a garage sale, and I saw a small 13” CRT from a brand I wasn’t familiar with (Haier). I knew the missus didn’t want too much more gaming related hardware for space, so the small TV was what I wanted. It has been great! I missed playing duck hunt, and now my 3 year old loves playing it too! Thanks, CRT!

In the past year I’ve picked up nearly a dozen CRTS to find which ones I liked most. I’ve kept four, with the largest of the bunch being my daily driver: a black 1997 32” Trinitron with s-video. I also have a 2003 27” Samsung with component which I picked up for free from a family’s vacation ski lodge. It was only ever used to watch the odd dvd, and is in phenomenal shape. Beyond that, I have a 1994 13” Magnasonic (rf only) which comes out for parties, and a white 1997 9” RadioShack TV which I love for getting cozy with on the couch with my SNES - this one is my second-most used of the bunch.

It took me and 3 other dudes to get it into the bed of my f150, and we tried to set it down by the dumpster gently, but it fell off the tailgate screen/tube first and I’ll never forget the MUSHROOM CLOUD of TOXIC METAL that erupted at the scene 🤣

One console I prefer to use with composite is the Sega Saturn. The otherwise “mesh transparencies” turn into actual transparencies from the dithering effect on 3D games. Otherwise I’d go with component. A product Ive come to appreciate, is the shinybow scart to composite converter. Any Scart capable console will benefit from RGB with this configuration.

I went back and grabbed the CRT (Toshiba 20A42, I believe) I used to use as a teenager, as my mum didn't want it taking up space. Talk about a win-win situation: she saved like 8 cubic feet of space, and I got to rediscover how good those old games used to look! A typical consumer CRT like this smooths out the pixels, often making things look like a higher resolution than they are. It's hard to believe that Donkey Kong Country is only 256x224, when it's so clear and smooth! When I was a kid, we had a 19" RCA with a fancy-shmancy keypad and LED window for inputting and displaying channel numbers. I forget the model, though.

Pretty solid info! A few things I would like to add: -WEGAs are great because they are quite common, but they have 2 significant weaknesses. The first is that they will often have awful geometry. This can make things look warped and distorted. This is especially noticeable on 2d games. The curved screen trinitrons will usually have better geometry. The second is something called "Red Push." Red push will shift the color of the image to make the color quite red. You can reduce (but not eliminate) the prominence of red push on some models of sets, but some you can't at all. -Trinitrons look great, but they aren't "The Best" like many think they are. The whole experience of CRTs is extremely subjective, and many shadow mask tubes can even look better, depending on who you ask! Keep an eye out for many other brands like JVC, Panasonic, and Toshiba. They all made phenomenal sets that are just as good as their Sony counterparts. If anyone tells you [model number] is the best CRT... ignore them because they have no idea what they are talking about. (and if they say the FV310 is the best CRT ever made, they DEFINITELY don't know what they are talking about) -I have done quite a bit of digging into HD sets, and some of my favorite sets are HD CRTs. But for retro gaming, I really, really recommend beginners avoid HD CRTs unless you are in deep and know exactly what you are doing. Almost every HD CRT in existence will be an awful experience for 240p and 480i games without going down a rabbit hole of extra hardware. For 480p/1080i content, some have no lag at all, but others (including almost every HD Sony ever made) can have several frames of lag! Some can have lag for 1080i disabled through service menu settings. Its a rabbit hole, and even the same brand can be inconsistent from model to model. For 5th gen and before, not a good option at all. For 6th and 7th, they can be, but it depends on the model, and you will need to do a lot of research first. -PVMs and BVMs are completely overrated. I have several of them, because I'm a huge nerd for the hobby. I spend far more time using my consumer sets than any of my PVMs/BVMs. They look great, but the difference between one and a good consumer set is not as big as you think. PVMs were hyped up back when they were super cheap and video mods/converters weren't as much of a thing. But times have changed, and a great consumer set can look better than all but the highest end PVM/BVM. PVMs and BVMs are needy, and not the best option for a first CRT. Don't buy into the hype, you will probably be happier with a consumer set than a PVM!

I plan on keeping it, but it's not a thing that can stay in the flat anymore. On the other hand I have a CRT monitor on my desk that serves the retro gaming duty for emulation and DOS/Windows games.

I have a 27-inch Sylvania that I got back in 2002 that I still use for PS2, Wii, and SNES games. My first high-definition television was a 28-inch Sanyo widescreen set that I bought back in 2006. That set weighted 100 pounds, and my friend and I would have to carry that thing down the stairs at my college dorm when the fall semester started, and back up the stairs when the spring semester ended. I ended up selling it before the spring semester of 2008 ended to another person who lived on my floor just so I wouldn't have to carry it up the stairs again. That, and the widescreen mode would cut off a portion of the picture on the left and right sides; games would say "heckpoint" instead of "Checkpoint."

Where I live, I've not seen a CRT on side of the road in recent memory. I finally ran across a 27" Sony VVega at a local thrift store and like you, it's my favorite CRT I've ever had. I got one that has the Component, SVIDEO, RF and Composite, along with a digital tuner so I can pickup free local TV stations with a cheap set of digital rabbit ears I got from the local bargin store. I agree with you, I really like this CRT and hope it lasts me for many years. Oh, and yes.. it took me and my son to carry it upstairs, this thing is pretty heavy. I guess I shouldn't have put my game room on the 2nd story...

Last year a neighbor down the road put 2 CRT TV's on the side of the road. One was a small 20 inch tv and the second was a massive 40 inch. I had no problem making my mind. I immediately picked up the little one. I was thrilled that I found a free tv and i didn't look back at the other massive tv.

So I converted a huge portion of my basement into two gaming/media centres, an HD area and an SD area with a 32" Sony Trinitron HD CRT. Playing games using component connections looks utterly beautiful, then there are the systems that can output 480p and then you're really floored. I have two more CRTs in reserve, both JVC I'Art sets, both with component. One's a 27" and the other is a 36.

While I don't have many older consoles currently, I've been rockin a Flat screen Vizio, but it still has lots of input types. There's 4 HDMIs, a component output, composite outside, even a VGA output! Granted, there's a chance there is so input lag, but I don't know enough to notice it if there is. It's kinda old, it only goes up to 1080p, but it works for my stuff (at least for now)

I can definitely stand up for smaller CRT's. Before the one I had went kaput, it was pretty dang useful. I could carry it around to different places that made it much easier to set up. Plus the picture looked so nice and crisp. The only problem was that it only had RF input, and that's mainly because I mostly focus on composite video for my game systems. Though I was able to get plenty of NES and SNES playtime on that thing, and even my Saturn. I beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the first time on that thing, I got to finally play Duck Hunt in my own home, and I still remember the last playthrough of Donkey Kong Country I did on it before it died. Before I found that CRT in the attic, and still to this day, I've had a big HD CRT that I know for a fact that I'll never be able to move. I'm certainly still happy with playing a good amount of games on it. It definitely looks better to me than plugging composite cables into a flatscreen, but given the lack of scanlines and slightly higher input latency that makes it impossible to play light gun games on the thing, I'm definitely on the search for a new regular CRT. One that's 12 to 14 inches and has composite input. Maybe even in stereo if I'm lucky, but if I have to I could just get something to combine the signals from the two audio cables into one. Hopefully I'll be able to get onto that sometime since it'd be great to have all of the advantages of a plain old consumer CRT again.

24AF44 here. 1 Component, 1 S-Video, 3 Composite in, 1 Composite Out (makes it easy for capturing footage if I ever want to stream games from my consoles) Man I'm so extremely grateful I have this thing in my possession, as I just happen to see it one day on FB marketplace just sitting on the curb free to pick up. Needless to say, I hopped right in my car without hesitation, snatched it up, drove it back home and have been enjoying the hell out of PS1 and Saturn on it ever since. Aside from the fun retro gaming sessions I've gotten out of it, I'm just happy that I was able to save it since the neighborhood it came from seemed to be on the upper-class side, so the previous owner probably just assumed "not flat panel tv therefore junk, onto the curb it goes!" and it felt like they were getting close to trashing it for good if nobody were to pick it up.

First of all, great Video. I've had a Bang & Olufsen CRT TV for a few weeks now. I've been looking for a medium size one for a while and its flatter design means it can fit into a small space. But the best thing about the device is its endless setting options that go far beyond color, contrast and brightness. Back in 2018, I moved provinces due to career change and had to come out before my wife and kids because the offer-to-start date was 5 days and it was an 18 drive. from Ontario to Prince Edward Island. I had to do the house hunting when I wasn't working, but had brought my SNES and a handful of games for my limited downtime to unwind. The AirBnB I was staying at didn't have a tv, and I'd wanted to get a CRT again (plus money was tight), so I hoped online and found a lady selling her 32" Sony Trinitron WEGA with matching Sony tv stand for $30; suffice to say, I could drive over there fast enough. For the last 5 years, that tv has been a fixture of my game room and a faithful video game companion. Mega Man X on the Trinitron is my idea of an awesome Friday night ;)

My favorite TV ever was a 1992 Rear Projection Pioneer - rear projection sets get a bad rep because like 99% of them were garbage, but this one was the exception! The colors were beautiful and the image was so crisp, it was a super high-end set. Oddly enough, it had a 16:10 aspect ratio, which in practice meant that you'd usually get to see the overscan on the sides as well as thin black borders, though with widescreen content it meant the letterboxing was thinner so it was really great for both 4:3 and 16:9. I'm actually using the same Trinitron that you were swinging around in this video now and I'd trade it to fix my Pioneer in a heartbeat! Sadly it passed away in fall 2021 and after like 9 months of struggle I've all but given up on repairing it, so it's now the stand for our 4k OLED. I'll likely be gutting it and converting it into a cool shelf case sometime down the road.

Great episode. I bought a brand new Sony Wega KV27FS12 27" CRT in 2001 for $500. Back then I bought it for the excellent svideo quality for my CDi (hehe) SNES, and JVC SVHS deck. It had these "new fangled YPbPr component inputs", which I assumed I'd never use, but skip ahead a couple of decades, and it's what I MOSTLY use on it! I bought HDRetrovision YPbPr cables/adapters, for GEN, TG16, NEO, SNES, SAT, and PSX. I am very happy with how everything looks on it. This TV has been through FIVE moves, to five different houses, and it's still going strong. The moves beings me to an important thing though.. the weight.. Wega's feel like they are made from steel and bricks. In fact this 27" Wega was about the same weight as my old JVC 35" CRT. It's a big boy! As much as I love the Wega, if/when it dies, I'm going to stick with an OLED. That, with some of the newer scanline shaders is VERY close to a CRT.. They are "almost there", and close enough for me. Good luck on finding your dream display!
