Haven't seen an MK870 video quite information-dense like this! I've been eyeing that in white + with PC Plate as I don't have many TKL's here haha (also s/o to SleepyLT, a fellow local youtuber who sold you the plate!). Great vid as usual sir Caloy! 💙

Been using this board since last year, no real mods for now except I changed the stabs to Lumia Plate stabs, with some Akko Rose Red switches. It is a good introductory custom KB if you want to check out this hobby given the points you already made. But for total value, the Akko 3068B is pretty hard to beat.

I just got an MK870 recently as well. Today, while doing some slight readjustments, I decided to reassemble it without any of the screws installed. With the PC plate I've also bought, and the two layers of shelf linear for case dampening, my typing experience has become just a tiny bit softer on the bottom out compared with screws, and since the case is a clip style case, everything works out fine for me!

Nice! I've been contemplating doing this as well as cutting off all of the standoffs, adding polyfill, and maybe cutting out bigger USB-port holes too if that becomes an issue.

Awesome video sir Caloy! If stiffness is an issue for you for this keyboard, I recommend trying plateless for this keyboard plus a polyfill acting as a dampener and a "gasket". The tray mount of this keyboard is snug enough to keep the pcb from moving around, and by removing the screws from the standoffs, it can remove the inconsistent sound profile that you can notice in the keyboard, as well as risking the screws ruining the holes just like in the video. I recommend using a 5-pin switch to fully achieve this mod without any issues and it can give you a more bouncy and flexy typing experience. I hope you can try this for yourself and give it a review. I hope this helps resolve the stiffness of the board and gives you a more premium feel and unique sound for a cheap budget friendly and easy DIY mod.

The pcb stabilizer compatibility as well as aftermarket plates that is present in this keyboard (that other budget TKLs don't have) really helps achieve this keyboard with a variety of modifications and which is why it is my go-to recommended budget tkl as well. solid video!

When you said larger keycaps scrape against the case, you lost me. I wanted this board for np profile keycaps, an I already know it would scrape. Looks like I'll just stick with getting the lk67. Great video though!

Thank you! Probably not on the Pirah. I don't really cover north-facing boards unless they're sent to me for free. And the Pirah seems to just be a rebranded LK67/TM680, which I already made a video on 😅

Awesome video, lots of great tips as usual. I actually just bought one of these last night as a cheap TKL to play with (and I really wanted a translucent black board). I was going to try the PE foam mod which I learned from your GMMK pro video, but if the tape mod produces similar effects I may just go with that!

Thank you so much! The PE foam mod would probably not work well here unless you also removed the silicone dampener. You might get switches losing contact with the hotswap sockets because of the extra thickness of the PE foam hehe

i got this same keyboard and i've been using it for 1 and a half month now. my previous board was a gmmk pro and this board is good. I was also interested in the gg86. I have extra gaskets from the gmmk pro and I thought about using that for the space bar for the polycarbonate plate to prevent sagging.

That should work. I've also since found that if you push the switch in just right, you won't get that sag. You have to sort of direct the force diagonally down and toward the top where it won't sag. Hard to describe lol

@@CaloysKeyboards Did the c3 stabs work with your stock aluminum plate? I'm thinking of buying the glorious v2 stabs because they should be small and fit into the gmmk pros plate. edit: nvm rewatched your vid and found out haha

Yes, I used the C3 stabs with the stock plate. Haven't tried the v2 Glorious stabs yet but if they're the same size as the V1 then they should fit just fine in plate-mount holes.

For the MK870? No you need regular stabs, not the ones for thin PCBs. The MK870 does not have a thin PCB.

Nice review. I'm going to buy this keyboard with PCB mount stabilizers but you said in the video that it needs stabilizers with smaller housing in order to fit in the stock plate. Right now i cant buy C3 stabs, i was wondering if you can tell me what alternative from KPrepublic would suit this issue (cherry stabs, everglide v2 stabs, etc)

C3 and Glorious stabs are the only ones I know for sure would fit, unfortunately. Everglide stabs are identical to Durock so those won't fit. I'm not sure about Cherry.

Hi, I want to buy myself a keyboard up to $200, but I do not know which one to choose, I know one thing, I need tkl, linear switches and preferably not a high keyboard, could I help with the choice?

That's a pretty big budget so you've got quite a bit of flexibility. For the keyboard itself, you could go with this one, the MK870 and then spend the rest of your money on some nicer switches and keycaps. Or you could get something more expensive like the NK87 Entry Edition and then get some cheaper keycaps and switches. I would recommend any of Gateron's new switches. The Pros are great: Pro Yellows and Pro Reds, very cheap but very great quality. If you can find some, the Gateron Oil Kings are amazing for a higher price. From my brief experience and based on others' feedback, there's really no need to lube them. For keycaps, you can just get a set of Akko ASA keycaps. Those are great quality. Or you could try out an in-stock ePBT set if you want to spend a bit more. If you want an entire keyboard with switches and keycaps pre-built, then you can't go wrong with the Keychron Q3 or K8 Pro. Some sample builds just based off quick price Googling: 1. MK870 ($60) + 90 pcs Gateron Oil Kings ($58.50) + any ePBT ABS set ($69) = $187.50 2. NK87 EE ($135) + 90 pcs Gateron Pro Yellows ($22.50) + Akko ASA Clear ($40) = $197.50 3. Keychron Q3 pre-built = $174 4. Keychron K8 Pro (Kickstarter) = $89 Of course, that's without shipping costs and if you're planning on doing mods then that'll add cost too. KBDFans is a really great place to browse because they've got pretty much everything.

I'm not sure as I don't have any of those but I would assume they're too big to fit. C3 and Glorious are the only ones that seem to be small enough to fit.

Have you seen the TH80 from Epomaker? They said they'd send me one of those although I haven't received tracking info yet. Seems like a comparable option and I would actually prefer it as it's south-facing. But probably not a lot of reviews for it either. I've seen it referred to as the Lychee G80 too.

@@CaloysKeyboards I have silent bobas, so I'm considering it to make it even more quieter, since its tactiles and maybe it would soften the blow?. Would cherry profile keycaps work with the polycarbonate plate alignment? You mentioned larger keycaps would scrape and I'm not sure if cherry is large. Also been using this keyboard for 4 months now with glorious v2 stabs and it's great.

Hey, i was wondering as i am getting this board, how does it feel with a PC plate? And does it mis-align the entire bottom row of swtiches so it’ll scrape against the bottom of the case?

The bottom out is softer with the PC plate than with the stock plate so it feels much better. Not bouncy or anything but not harsh. It's not the entire bottom row. It starts from the right alt and goes all the way to the arrow keys.

@@CaloysKeyboards do you think it would stop scraping if you cut the bottom out to make the hole bigger for the switch? Also do you know if any PC tkl plate will work for the mk870 or does it have to be this specific one?

@@jasonc772 You'd have to cut/sand/file the top of the holes not the bottom I think. And I don't know if that will cause other issues like maybe making those keys loose. Maybe with a 5 pin switch, you'd be fine. Can't be sure though. Really not sure about other plates. Lots of factors to consider like the holes for the case screw posts. Probably too risky to attempt

Where did you put it? On the ends of the wires? How much did you put?

@@CaloysKeyboards I put a mess onto the whole wire and a bit past the right angle turn for the wire, and some grease into the housing.

It's only for the wires, not the housings. You'll unfortunately have to clean it out of there.
