Hes not that great of a skater, in fact his skating is his worst part of the game. Im from michigan and iv seen him play many times in midegts as my son played against him. Iv seen Luke play since he was 13. Hes never played on a bad team. Always great players around him. I can tell you that if his brothers werent quin and jack, Luke may not even have been drafted. Hes nlt that good. Just wait and see. There is NO WAY he will pan out in the NHL. Hes average for his age and always has been. I see Luke ending up in the ECHL. I think he will have a hard time in the AHL. As i said, hes not that good. Most over rated player iv seen in the past 10 - 15 years.

@@TChockey it comes with the territory. Hes gonna be okay. He will sign, get paid and have other options. If he was a great player i would say hes great. I don't see it and other guys i spoke to in coaching and scouting capacities agree with whay im saying. Poor defender, poor shot for a defensmen, below average skater, makes a lot of mistakes at the college level but plays on a great team. I would never hate on a kid for no reason.

There is no comparison to Quin. Its apples and oranges. Its not even close. Quin is a legit elite nhl skater. Luke is not. Lukes size means nothing as he is icredibly soft. He cant do anything with it.

Ruff start. His freshman year was better shooting wise. He had much better chemistry with his team too so they moved the puck better. I think he is also focusing on his defense more cause his offense is gonna is already insane and will fit right into jersey

@@TChockey 17 goals in 41 games. I know the devils systems and the amount of A+ opportunities he will get, he is gonna score tons of goals. I could see even see him getting 40 goals in a season in his prime and 30 goals in his first full year

@@CPM9999 he was also playing alongside future and some current NHL’ers last season, against guys without much of a prospect of going pro once their collegiate careers are finished. I don’t think you realize how difficult scoring 30 goals in a season is in the NHL, let alone as a defenseman, and a rookie at that. He’s not going to shoot 18% in the NHL, that’s a guarantee.

Hey Greg, he is a D. The coach probably has a lot of trust on him. If he would miss 50% of his move, this would be a different story ofc. But it create a lot of great scoring chance for Michigan when he beats a defender 1v1.

If you can skate like that, you can play wherever you want. From the highlights it looks like he has a tendency to carry the puck. If he can learn to use his skates to start opening up shooting/passing lanes he’s going to be dangerous.

@@MrVisde I agree. However, if we are saying he is a great NHL prospect, are there Ds who play this way at all in NHL? I think none. So, he will have to change his game drastically. I am not sure about 50% of the moves being missed. I think if you lose the puck at the blue line (or a step inside) even 5% of the time, it can result in the goals against, and the player will be benched.

@@Gregcoach the elite puck moving defensemen in the NHL can carry the puck like Hughes when a team is being too aggressive. For the most part though they’re using their legs to generate seams to pass/shoot the puck. I think Hughes will figure that out, but right now he’s skating through everyone in college because he can. I remember when Makar first came into the NHL, he deceptively made it seem like he was going to move the puck one way and would curl around and switch the play in the other direction.

I don’t think he was picked because he is the brother of Jack but I will say I’m not the biggest fan Hughes too even tho he has some great skating and good hands. His decision making is not that good but he is still gonna have time to develop his weaknesses with the devils

I simply try to show ya’ll his skills abilities so that is why he may not look like a complete two way defender but his breakout pass is elite and defense is great too. I would still take Hughes over some guys like Clarke and Edvinsson everyday

Some people call it click bait, but whatever, you got me to click lol I wanted to see how good this kid is, whether his skills matched with how you hyped him up in the title. Sure he skates like silk, and has good puck control, but no finish and I wasn’t overly impressed with his playmaking. Not very physical, either. Still young, though, so we’ll see how he pans out. I didn’t realize he went 4th overall. Some of the hype could simply be prestige of the family name. Kinda like the Staals. Four completely different players, but each one got their fair crack at it, with three of the four brothers drafted in the first round, two of them in the top-3.
