A very good smart statement about removing the galvanized coating before welding, the reason why I had a welding shop teacher who had to have his stomach replaced the actual stomach and they replaced it with a goat stomach because he had welded for 30 years on galvanized metal without a respirator or an oxygen mask and the fumes from the galvanization will destroy your stomach lining so please for the love of God be careful Tell your followers if they're going to follow your design make sure to get that galvanized coating off first.

I personally know the owner of Kinsman hardware and I can assure you the price he charges is not so he can get rich, in fact, he has to work full-time at another job to keep the awning business viable. It is super expensive to build these in the United States especially at the level of quality he does it at. I can promise if he was able to build and sell these cheaper at the same level of quality he would do so in a heart beat. He is a really awesome person and in it for the passion, not the profit.

That's very, very good. Problem with us DIY'ers is you can't really afford to incrementally improve a design by making it two or five times, so starting off with a known working design is so useful. Thank you. The sewing...the sewing machine, the techniques...perhaps you can do a video on that? (Or is that the next Video?)
@unionse7en

also consider vinyl, even used billboards, their is a special glue/solvent for it that makes incredibly strong connections. Easier and stronger than sewing.

The little stand off posts: Sew a circle of thin leather onto the awning where it touches, and on rub areas on the corners to prevent wear through. (boat bimini trick) Wind will wear through if it's used lots otherwise. Crutch/cane feet or folding chair feet are possible alternative sources for feet. Leather: I keep leather from leather furniture/purses etc being scrapped to use for little projects like this. It can be 'saddle stitched' (search term) by hand if you don't have a heavy duty sewing machine. Great build! Thanks for the video!

In the middle of building an offroad bicycle camper and this gives me some ideas. I am thinking something very similar, only using carbon fiber tube and pvc plastic board (I often just use cheap plastic cutting boards) in place of conduit and metal plate / sheet to save weight. It also only needs to be about 1/2 to 3/4 the size...9x9 I am thinking.

Ripstop by the roll sells outdoor, performance fabric target to DIYers. They sell long - length zippers. I ordered one that goes around the entire perimeter of my 11 foot hammock. I think about 25 feet. A long zipper like that and some extra remnant fabric, and you have a bag. I will be copying this build when I make my own awning. I like your first version, but I wanted one that was freestanding. V2 looks perfect. I was curious to see how the conduit held up during welding.

Great awning, I watched your first awning build and started building myself one. I ended up with my awning costing less than $100.°° delivered by end of the week I ordered it. I think it was due to tracking cookies from "Google" search and U-tube for my building awning parts. I was starting to order fabric for awning, when I got the offer E-marketing email. So now I guess I should move on to a 270 awning with all the aluminum I now have. 🤔 My Scamp T.T. could use a low cost but high quality awning. Thanks again for all your hard work and time on your projects and editing of videos then sharing it. Your projects (and others) are effecting the market over-pricing camping gear out of reach for budgets.

Thank you! 🙏Got seam sealer on the way! Yeah, I was thinking it needed a flap of some sort maybe with magnets
@jameshisself9324
@jameshisself9324 11 ай бұрын
I agree it is fantastic! A flap to cover the hole would be complicated, since it would have to be big enough to keep water off the near side of the roof. Otherwise water will land on the roof and run down that same window, which is hardly any different from hitting it directly. In pouring rain it will probably be hardly noticeable, since the roof will be draining there as well.

Awesome video and build! Love the detail and your use of CAD. It takes a bit of extra time but you can leave any zinc plated metal in a bin/glass/tub/bucket of white vinegar for (time varies between a day to days based on plating thickness) to strip the zinc off so you don't have to worry about zinc fume sickness. The sanding works on exposed surfaces but your still getting fumes from the plating on the areas you can not sand.

I think I'll try to add an additional flap of material over the bracket so it doesn't leak as much there. I also wonder if the arms could have been more of a triangular design (widest at the bracket) instead of rectangular to help prevent the arms from sagging a bit more and also help with water shed.
