In this episode I take you through what is in my opinion the best DIY live bait tank set up for on or off the boat.
This tank didn't take too long to do and you don't have to be handy on the tools to make it, it's only two drill holes and you can put it all together. I have tried to remember all of the fittings used as best I can so refer back to video when you are buying materials if any confusion.
items needed...
DRILL
1 DRILL-BIT to match the inlet elbow
1 DRILL-BIT to match the outlet plug
materials needed...
60L drum
-3m of 20mm clear pvc hose (inlet hose) note use size of hose that fixes to the back of your pump.
-1m of 40mm clear pvc hose (outlet hose)
-hose clamps for both ends of each hose
-marine grade adhesive
-1 inline pump
-1 flowrite power stream air rater
-1 inlet elbow plug as shown in video
-1 straight outlet plug as shown in video
total cost as of two years ago came to $400 so it is moderately priced but it will last forever if looked after.
I hope this helps you get onto some trophy fish in the future.
if you have any questions leave a comment and I will answer as vets I can.
hope you enjoy the info video.

Thanks mate, hope this vid helps. It’s been such a good live bait tank for me I’ve even made another one in a bit smaller version for up and down the break wall 👌🏼

Mate, why don't you put a tube or straw in that aerator hole to extend the thing so it doesn't suck water.😊

Nice... you solved some problems I've been having with a design I'm working on for my own, so thanks for that. Love the barrel... I need something removable and a round tank's always better than one with corners so the fish don't get stuck in the corners and die. Also loving the clip on hose fitting, I've been looking for an easily removable hose fitting. Can you give me somed details on what fitting it actually is and where you got it? Also do you ever lose any of your bait through the outlet, would it be worth putting a strainer on it? FYI you don't actually need the aerator if you're pumping fresh sea water... the ocean's already plenty enough aerated, so as long as you have a constant fresh supply you're fine, since what'll kill the fish just as fast is the amonia in their waste (which is why we just using a bubbler doesn't work as well). The aerator's useful if you're recirculating the water though. Oh and FYI an easy way to fix your inlet being too low is just stick a 2" piece of plastic drinking straw into that air hole so the water doesn't cover it. Another tip is that you might want to put a non-return valve on your inlet hose. If your pump stops and you don't notice the tank will siphon out through the inlet without the valve.

Hey mate glad you like the vid. I had the aerator cause I sometimes take my tank on the rocks and beach so I recirculate the water once it’s in the tank, I usually catch the bait the day before and they stay alive all night in my garage for the next day so the tank works really well 👌🏼 I have since put a small piece of plastic in the top hole to solve that problem and now it works a treat 👌🏼 As for the hose connection I’ll try and find the receipt for it and get exactly what it’s called for you, I got it from one of the boat supply stores here in Newcastle so if I can’t find what it’s called I’ll call into the shops and find out for you. I didnt have any trouble with my live yakkas going out the hole although I did have trouble with live squid trying to get out of the outlet so I will be putting a cover over it in the future just gotta find something that’ll work. Let me know how you go setting up yours 👌🏼

@@slappintails I actually went out and bought all the bits and mostly put it together yesterday. Still haven't done the electrical connections, will hopefully get to that today. Turns out my local "Whitworths" had everything I needed. The connection's called a "Qwik-Lok" and (as I'm sure you know) comes with the aerator. I managed to break one of the little locking tabs on mine and had to get a replacement. It's holding for now but the first time I have to remove it I'll lose the little tab. The manufacturers only wanted US$5 for the part but were gonna charge me US$72 for postage, was gonna cost me over AU$120! Found a company in Sydney on ebay that had them, cost me $22 all up. Be careful with those connectors, it doesn't take much to snap the little locking tabs on the sides. I didn't end up getting that drum. I'm sitting it on top of a battery compartment and the height from there to my gunnels is only 30cm, so the 68cm tall barrel would have stuck up too far. Got a 30L barrel from Bunnings that worked better for me as it's only 45cm tall. I don't plan to use it out of the boat so I mounted my pump on a bracket with a pickup on my transom. Means I can use it while the boat's moving without hauling in the pump, but I still needed the removable hose fitting so I can move the tank if I need to get to the battery. It'll hold less but considering a litre of water weighs 1kg I didn't really want an extra 60kg in the back of the boat anyway, 30kg is bad enough. Oh I found a better solution for the outlet than a regular skin fitting too... couldn't get a 1.5" outlet with a strainer (they exist but nobody has stock and I'm impatient) but I found something called a "cockpit floor drain" which has the same barbed tail and has a grill in the top... so no escaping bait. I put a ball valve in the fill line too. That'll stop the pickup filling up the tank (or flooding the boat if the tank's not there) when I move the boat, and allow me to reduce the output from the 500GPH pump if it overflows the outlet. I also put a tap on mine with a hose to drain it into the bilge (where the bilge pump will pump it out) so I don't have to disconnect it and lift 30kg over the side to empty it. Going fishing on Friday, hopefully it'll be working then so I can try it out.

Have you thought of putting a tube into the hole on the aerator to have the air intake higher.

What about a small piece of thin hose that sticks into the hole in the top of the FlowRite and lifts that air intake higher. Almost like a straw in the hole.

if your doing 12 hours + on the water using a live bait tank..i would personally look at buying a bait tank timer.. you can adjust the amount of time it's off for.. i run mine 1 Min on 3 mins off.. so if your using for 12hrs it's only running for 3hrs.. but fresh water flowing every mins...
@slappintails

I didn’t even know one existed haha. Where would I be able to get one? That would be super handy and save battery life

@slappintails just google them...I think they come from USA.. about $80 I think.. the more livies you have the quicker you timer must be. but if you got 20 you can have 1 Min on 3-4 mins off... I'm out there sometimes for 2 days.

Wouldn't the water flowing from the body of water be sufficientenly oxygenated and the aerator not be needed?
@slappintails

Yeah but the aerator is mainly for when I catch my live bait the day before I go fishing off the beach and recycle the water when it’s in my garage. The bait stays fresh and super alive for the next day 👌🏼
