The Best DIY Organic Spray 2 Stop Whiteflies: Recipe, Routine, Demonstration of Effectiveness & More

*Use whatever soap you feel most comfortable with to start. They all wash off. Always test spray. It was suggest to rinse the plants with a hose between each cycle. I think that is a good addition. I show you how to identify whiteflies on garden kale, how the DIY spray is effective on controlling an actual infestation of whiteflies over 48 hours, cover the recipe, and the spray routine needed to treat whiteflies in your vegetable garden organically.
*After looking more at the formula, I think the Dawn or (Not) concentrated detergent soaps really dispersed and hold the 1 tablespoon of Neem Oil really well through the water. This allows for a very fine even coating of oil on the whiteflies. Use whatever soap you wish, they all wash off, but the key is the oil dispersion through the gallon of water. Washing the plant before the next spraying will also reduce soap build up on the plant.

Gary, Try Murphy's oil soap (for fine wood furniture) instead of detergent. -- For years now I have been using Murphys in place of castile soap -- And I learned the hard way NOT to use detergent. But when I mix soap with BT , Neem or whatever I use Murphys and found it very safe and great -- Ray Delbury Sussex County NJ USA

Do you use this spray on everything in garden? Can it be used on greens as well as peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, beans, cucumbers, brassicas etc?

@@keales9564 BT is Bacillus Thuringiensis. It's an organic insecticide for worms or caterpillars. It disrupts the worms/caterpillars digestion and it kills them

Finally! I’ve been battling white flies on everything, especially my jalapeño pepper plants. They have gone onto my tomatoes and strawberries. Best so far is the water hose. You can rest assured that I’ll give this recipe a try!

My dad use to use an inch of a cigar and soap … he would soak that cigar piece on the gallon of water then add the teaspoon of soap… used it on his roses… Thanks for this recipe

I love neem oil and soap. I use Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap since it has peppermint oil in it. It has been effective so far.

When I use Dr Bs soap with Neem oil it makes the neem clump up at the top in a thick froth and doesn’t mix well - what ratio of soap to neem do you use?

@@nkvball808 1/4 cup of neem, 3 teaspoons of soap in 2 gallons of water. That's the ratio on the directions for the neem oil I bought. I can't think of the brand though.

I use 1 gallon water, 3 Tablespoons Dawn dish soap and vegetable oil so that you don't see the oil floating on the top of the water. I used the cheapest oil I could find. Works great.

Hi! Today is 7-13-23, so how are your plants doing? My 2 cents- U are growing your plants too close together! Me thinks that you will get less white fly if you double the spacing between your kale (and similar) plants. Also, try stuffing cheap annual flowers and herbs between them to attract beneficials. I find this a great use for 1 gallon containers left over from last season (after you have thoroughly cleaned them, of course!). Thanks for sharing your ideas with us. Happy Gardening !

Years ago when I took care of interior plants at businesses, I made my own mix of dawn soap, a little bit of rubbing alcohol, and a couple drops of Tabasco sauce mixed with water. It got rid of spider mite, scale, aphids, and white fly. I tried this mix outside and some of the leaves burned from the sun. So it wasn't so much the finer leaves not able to handle the spray but this mix needs to be used without too much sun exposure. I haven't used it enough outside but may experiment without the alcohol and see if the Tabasco sauce does it. I am talking only a drop or two in a spray bottle.

I tried spraying with dawn and Neem Also with Murphy’s oil soap and Neem Twice the amount of soap with Neem And my white flies are still alive and well- maybe a little less. I have sprayed twice and now I need more advice!

Thanks for the video will try something similar as white flies are a huge problem in Hawaii. They often carry tomato yellow leaf curl virus so it makes growing tomatoes difficult.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! This has been the worst year for white flies I ever had. I also have tried many other sprays and really appreciate you telling us what you tried and what didn’t work. I was beginning to wonder if I had done something wrong this year because the bugs have been brutal and the high temps are making spraying ineffective .

Oh I hope this works for thrips inside my house. Round two of spray. But I thought I knocked them out the first time around and I cut up some house plants that where just to big to get around efficiently on a regular basis. The first spraying took so long so I procrastinated till I saw them come back 1.5 weeks later. I will spray again in 5-7 days, then again... hopefully that will be the end of these pests. First time really dealing with an indoor infestation.. 🤪💔

I use yellow sticky paper from the Dollar store, gets all the white flies and other flies, 10 different sizes.

How about orange Peels or lemon peels put them in a jar with a bit of vinegar let it soak for a couple of days for five days get a little bit of dawn to it and spray your plants

it always gets around 90 here in alabama, I used castel soap a few days ago, and other stuff Malathion 50%, neem oil. I can get them dead. But in three days usually the fourth day they are all back. I even am trying a neem oil drench but white flies is the main problem this on cucumbers and tomatoes.

I would stick with the cycles ever 2 days, 3 or 4 times. Maybe reduce what your are spraying once they are dead initially and just work on catching any hatchlings. Have you tried a combination of Neen oil and Pyrethrum as a spray? I was talking to a gentleman(customer) at a local garden center about neen oil and he suggested this mixture. I would like to try the mixture but with the 100 + days with no end in sight.

If you're spraying oil, then the sun could end up frying the leaves. Evening spraying gives more time before the sun gets strong, and if your nights are cool and humid then you might get greater contact time with your spray. If you have a crazy infestation, I would say spray asap with test plants at a conservative concentration. Another commenter mentioned pollinators, but I wouldn't worry too much with this type of spray on kale. Pollinators don't hang out on kale that isn't flowering except to take shelter. If you are concerned about them, it's best to research native pollinators and schedule your treatments around their behaviors/life cycle.

When I use organic, I harvest before spraying and time it so I dont need to harvest again for 5-7 days. But I just rinse them. I dont worry too much about the organic sprays. Thanks. They lay caterpillar eggs on kale leaves. Insect dust or neem oil for the eggs, not much to do for the butterflies themself. They are tough. My experience has been that the whitefly battle is a lost cause. I avoid the curly kale because it is harder to clean (too many hiding places) and stick with red russian. It is easiest to ignore the flies, harvest the leaves you want, soak them in salt water to clean/kill whats on it or use a vinegar water mixture....use your hands to wipe off any fly remnants (most will have abandoned the leaves when you pick them, but they do leave white spots/eggs/residue etc.), rinse. Cut into pieces boil/steam in a pan of shallow water, add some olive oil, salt, pepper, vinegar or lime/lemon juice...you are the king of jungle, eating a few dead flies or their remains will not kill you...bon appetit. The fact that you are going to boil/steam them, you may be able to just skip the salt water soak or vinegar soak, but that will help detach anything that was clinging on to the leaves that did not fly or drop off during harvest. I would not recommend eating infested kale raw, definitely boil steam for a few minutes to kill any bugs.

Gary I’ve used your Neem oil, peppermint, and rosemary oil with soap as a spray, I forget what it’s for, does it keep pests away and treat fungus issues or is it just pest control? I’m having fungal issues with my pole beans, I pruned them heavily but I’d like to treat them with something in case I didn’t get all the infected leaves. Will this mix work or should I just use a Neem oil with soap or something else like a copper fungicide?

It can do all of that but it varies. Neem is great for chewing caterpillars. Peppermint and rosemary really work well on aphids and spider mites. They mask scents too. I use h202 for most fungal issues. But any oil spray can coat fungus spores and stop them from reproducing. Are white flies the ones that will leave the plants in mass up in your face when you water plants like peppers and tomatoes? I've never really noticed any damage on my peppers or tomatoes but they are such a nuisance when I'm watering. I always water later in the day because I have some health problems that prevent me from doing much early in the mornings so I don't know if they are worse in the evening or not. I don't recall noticing them in the heat of the day when I'm outside looking at my plants.

Hi Gary, there was a volunteer in the garden, I thought it was Cucumbers but it was small Cantaloupe, i had to pick two small ones this morning, because they were changing to yellowish colors, is there anything I can do to save them, it is loaded with blooms, i must have watered them too much

I sprayed the neem oil/soap/water mixture on my plants and it seems to be helping with the whiteflies, but now the leaves are wilting on my tomatoes and cucumbers. Will they bounce back? 😥

So this was tested on the Kale. I did test spray other plants. Hopefully you did a test spray. However, they can be wilting from the heat. Not sure. Last year I used veg oil...did nothing for the bug infestations, only clogged my sprayer. Neem oil not available in my area.........this year whiteflies already early in season.... :( :( now what??

You can go with castile soap. Its not that we use chemicals it is what do they do. Basic soap as castile might be a way to go.

When you say only spray under 90° does that mean while you are spraying only? If it's under 90 in the morning but will be triple digits later is it OK to spray? It's so hot in Texas!

I had a bad infestation behind my home and found that cumulatively (several repeated sprayings).left enough residual oil on the greenery as a deterrent. I wasn't eating it though,just tried to make it less attractive for them. Thanks for your tips through the years, long time subscriber.
